Cindy Adams: Forget Wikipedia, I'm Not 83!

New York Post gossip columnist Cindy Adams — who has written about taking on Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales before, but didn't divulge why — came clean in her column today: Wikipedia says she was born in 1925, and she swears she's not 83!

She writes:

P.S. from C.A.: Modern culture trashes everyone. Years back "SNL" zinged my husband and me. I'm told recently The Observer incorrectly observed I'm an octogenarian. That stems from garbage which Wikipedia's founder won't correct despite proof to the contrary. This founder - now looking to stick his icky Wiki into global marketing although the thing fosters lies - said to me only: "Untrue stuff about you might've been posted by someone who doesn't like you." So fix it?! No.

Wikipedia lists her birthday as April 24, 1925, but in September 2007, Radar listed her as 76.

Update Cityfile, which has Cindy as 78 in their listing for her, sends over the following voter registration records proving that Cindy was born in 1930 (and that she's a registered Republican):

The lady doth protest WAY too much. According to a 2006 NYTimes profile, she claimed to have been 16 when she married Joey Adams in 1952, which would have made her born in 1936 and therefore 71 or 72 today, by that measure, which can't possibly be true. Another profile gave her age in 2003 as 73, according to Internet sources, which would make her 80 today, with a birth year of 1929.

I hope that people really notice the key point of this event. It's not that Wikipedia is often wrong about this or that. It is that the site is purposed to be an online revenge and defamation platform, which the co-founder defends with comments (to Cindy Adams) like, "People should use it for background - not as their primary source", and "Sometimes those sorts of things can be posted by someone who doesn't like you". Jimmy Wales is the most unaccountable, undeserving Internet celebrity of all.

If you are an educator you need to be telling your students that Wikipedia is not a qualified, academic resource. As a starting point for learning, fine. But it is not an authoritative resource. It doesn't compare to the paper encyclopedias of past generations, and even those sucked.

1st - wikipedia has cited sources for her age, and apparently no one has it "right" as a quick google gets you nothing more accurate, if Cindy Adams wants it corrected she should give wikipedia her birthdate
2nd - she was married to Joey Adams who was born in 1911 - they were married in 1952 (according to the IMDB) so her being born in 1925, fourteen years after her husband, 27 years old when she got married to a 41 year old man, doesn't seem that unbelievable, does it?
3rd - wikipedia is (as has been shown by numerous studies) as accurate as any encyclopedia; it has no more errors than Brittanica, for example. It most certainly should be usable by students or scholars as a source. BUT THAT'S THE POINT - it's ONE SOURCE. Follow the citations the wikipedia article uses, and use other sources as well. wikipedia is a GREAT, probably the BEST, STARTING POINT.
It is BETTER than encyclopedias of the past because it is CONSTANTLY, 24/7, being editted and updated.

Even though Wikipedia has some info on my own family wrong (every time I corrected these details, some jokers "re-corrected" the details), I must agree that Wikipedia is a good starting point for researchers and fact checkers. It, of course, still doesn't mean one can rely on Wikipedia as the be-all and end-all.

After all, good researchers know that one should check at least three different sources before confirming it as a fact.

Other than the point above about stressing to students that Wikipedia is an "open source thus not always credible source" who the hell cares who Cindy is. If she's so concerned about her birthday being incorrect on Wiki, she can certainly go in and change it. I guess when you're paranoid about people finding out how old you really are the truth is not necessarily your friend.
