Keith Olbermann Praises "Naive" Chris Matthews, Compares "The View" To A Blender, Challenges Bill O'Reilly To Arm Wrestling Match

Olbermann

Keith Olbermann, whose MSNBC contract was renewed for four more years yesterday — at an estimated $7.5 million per year (or $30 million over four years) — spoke to TVNewser's Gail Shister about Chris Matthews, women in cable, and what it's like to be on "The View" (watch his appearance here).

On Chris Matthews
Olbermann — who explained to "The View" that he does not vote, said he would vote for Chris Matthews if he runs for Senate in Pennsylvania (no matter that he is not a Pennsylvania resident):

"I would definitely suspend my symbolism and vote for him....I like Chris. I think he approaches his job like a public servant. He has a genuinely naive 'Mr. Smith Goes to Washington' commitment to making good things happen in this country."

On "The View"

Olbermann said visiting "The View" is like "sitting in a blender for 10 minutes, and I mean that in the nicest way possible. Five people were asking me questions at the same time."

He called Barbara Walters "just a delight" and reminisced fondly of his boozy lunch with Whoopi Goldberg in 1999, when she was hosting "Hollywood Squares"

On women in cable
Olbermann praised colleague Rachel Maddow: "Given the lack of success of women as anchors in prime time, it may not be far from true [that Rachel Maddow is the Queen of Cable, as Stephen Colbert suggests]. There are only two: Greta [van Susteren of Fox News Channel] and Rachel. It's been made more difficult for women, mostly through the actions of men."

As Shister notes, he notably leaves out his 8PM competition on CNN, Campbell Brown, who he has recently started referencing on his program.

On Bill O'Reilly
Olbermann challenged Bill O'Reilly to an arm wrestling match, and is sure that he would win:

"He'd never do it, because every time we're in the same place, he keeps himself 25 feet away, but I'm ready to go. I do yoga, work out three times a week. I think I could take him if it comes to that."

Thank god for Kieth Olberman. He was the sole reason to watch MSNBC until he got Rachel hired. Now the pair of them are making news by covering the news without the corporate media slant. All we need to do now is get rid of Joe "plays footsies in public bathrooms" Scaryborrow and we'd have a network. I just wish KO has been the force he is now when the war in Iraq was starting up, we might have actually avoided the whole thing.

Olbermann's comment on Campbell Brown and cohort forgetting or avoiding the fact that the Republicans controlled both houses of Congress and the Presidency during the Bush Presidency was hardly the beginning of Brown joining O'Reilly as a regular Worst Person in the World winner.
For some reason HuffPo keeps trying to stir that up.

Try to imagine what we would have had over the past 4-5 years if Keith wasn't reporting?

i liked olberman until i found out he doesn't vote. now i feel like he doesn't have the right to enjoy that $30 million dollar pedestal to spout his political views. and come one, 30 million? god our priorities as a society are so screwed. there are so many people who work so much harder for so much less.

sorry keith but it's time for me to tune out.

It's an American's right to vote, not a requirement.

I can understand a news person abstaining, if for no other reason, to at least try to remain objective or neutral in their reporting.

The argument that you have no say if you don't vote is silly.

I have always liked Olbermann too - and yes he was wonderful during the elections, and usually all the time - BUT..........

I am ashamed of him that he does not vote - too many American have died, keeping our freedom - and giving us the gift of being able to vote freely in this country - and to me it's pretty damn arrogant to go on national television - and admit - that he does not vote!

Anyone who is an American citizen, who lives in this country and enjoys the freedoms and bounty of this country - and does not vote - I don't care who that person is..................should have their butt kicked really hard..........

FOR SHAME, FOR SHAME, FOR SHAME -

$7.5 million a year doesn't seem outrageous. (Limbaugh and Hannity's salary? THAT's outrageous).

Maybe he doesn't vote as a way of keeping "objective".

Finally, progressives have their say on cable! It was about time someone from the "sane side" has a voice against the Hannities and O'Reillys of the world. He deserves every penny he gets and I hope Rachel gets even more - they are the voice of the American people who voted for Obama and all he represents. Now if only we could get MORE of these guys on the air, pounding away at the lies told by the right, our country would continue to move in the right direction.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:29 PM on 11/11/2008

So you're saying they won't hold Obama responsible when he makes mistakes just like Fox did?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:37 PM on 11/11/2008

Fox only holds democrats responsible for things, while they let Republicans off because they were following their faith in doing whatever they did wrong. Those things that Fox calls Democrats out on, especially Obama, are usually made up, whole cloth, and the accusations are typically followed by screeds of "socialist", "communist", "un-American", et al.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:38 PM on 11/11/2008

Yes, ignore those that have different opinions and then ignore them!

Olbermann is a talking head that gives opinions . . . no different than any right wing wack job in the media. The sad thing is you would some crazy right wing guy for buying into the Hannity's of the world when you are buying into the crazy left wing guy.

"Today is November 11, and today on The View..." And as the foursome do their walk-on, Elton John's "Bitch is Back" is playing as an entree to pronounce Sir Elton's appearance on today's show. Was the timing on purpose when the lyrics "She's a bitch, she's a bitch..." plays, out struts Elizabeth Hasselback. Coincidence or a purposeful timing in the control room?

I'm sure you would prefer a show that has all of the hosts agreeing with your ideas all the time. A big liberal lovefest. Without Elizabeth, there would be no ratings.

Yes because that show has been on since the mid 90s and they had no ratings before the Survivor flunk out, turned GOP token came on.

Your grasp of reality and facts seems to be quite tenuous.
