Laura Bush

President Bush's plans to pen a memoir of his time in office may have been curtailed, but he's not going to be able to take comfort in the fact that a down economy has the publishing world bearish on presidential remembrances anymore. Because while he can't even get wingnut welfare imprint Regnery Publishing to take his phone calls, his wife is setting up a deal for her own book that looks like a towering pile of dollar bills:

LAURA Bush is lining up a multimillion-dollar deal to write her memoirs - but the first lady's lame-duck hubby may have to wait years before cashing in on a tell-all about his two troubled terms as president.

"Laura is interviewing publishers who are bidding on her memoirs," one biographer told Page Six. "The publishers are coming to the White House to meet with her and discuss the book."

Literary agent Mort Janklow put things in perspective over at Page Six, saying that, "The wives of presidents generally write books that have a greater public interest. Wives usually write from a personal point of view -- instead of talking about government policy, they talk about when the dog came to the White House and had to be paper-trained." Somehow, I think that the greater fascination in a Laura memoir stems from a desire to draw comparisons between the real story and the flight of imagination penned by Curtis Sittenfeld, whose An American Wife exposes her conscience.

Most industry observers think that President Bush should wait about five years before delivering his memoir, tentatively titled A Staggering Stagger of Staggering Staggering.

Do you ever read the comments made by right-wingers in regards to Michelle Obama? It should offend anyone with a fair mind to read or hear insults about the physical qualities of a woman who has done nothing to affect your life. The families should be left alone unless they do something to personally offend you.

Well, Laura does have a weird choice in lipstick.

Not to be petty... but she doesn't look healthy. Her skin looks pallid and her expressions always looks like she is drugged with valium or something (which I wouldn't blame her with that husband of hers!)

I think Laura has the potential to be far more attractive than she does. She has naturally slanted eyes and wonderful bones. Nice coloring and proportions. Her face doesn't look to me as though it has been altered and she has few wrinkles. The ingredients are all there.

However, the main problem is tone - both muscle and skin. She looks flacid and her skin does not glow. The result is that she looks pasty and out of shape physically and that makes her look old and less vibrant. It is too bad that she doesn't join her husband in the fitness regimen that he follows religiously. For all his faults (soooo many) he does look fit and healthy. C'mon Laura, go for a run!

She sure does look pasty and it is not the first photo that depicted that. I am wondering about her eyes. Many still photos of her show her eyes going in different directions. That's not normal, is it? Unless she has a glass eye that I am not aware of.

That is one of the unflattering pictures i've ever seen of her. She's very pretty for her age. HuffPo spent some time digging up a bad pic, I expect.

As much as I like Laura, I will NOT be "lining" her pocket with my money.

Whenever, I'm tempted to spend money furiously like that, I stick it into my: "frivolous fund account" that I set up 7 years ago.

Well, there's always the library if you want to read her book but hold your money on principle.

Although, I wouldn't be surprised if Laura announced she would give all proceeds to the literacy programs she has worked so hard to support and promote. She's a classy lady and it's sad that she is being judged because of the failure of her husband's administration.

I'm not judging her on anything her husband did or did not do. As stated, I like Laura and I like her mother-law. as well.

My thought is as yours; if I wish to read her memoir I will check it - from the library. But then there is just so many other books, etc, I wish to read until I will not make it a priority to read hers.

Without a doubt she is a "classy lady".......I love listening to her speak.

Folks, let's let up on the Bush jokes. WE WON! We have our choice as President. We have a Democratic congress for the first time in 14 years. I think we can be a little magnanimous at this time. Just keep in mind that much of the wrong that Bush did would not have been possible without some Democratic support or at least acquiescence. Bush and his wife seem to be doing everything in their power to ease the transition.

I look forward to reading Laura Bush's book. She was one of the few bright lights of this administration. She comes across to me as a genuine person with a kind heart.

Totally agree. We don't have to be jerks because some of the Repubs were jerks. Take a cue from the President we got into office and don't hold a grudge. Besides it's what some in the GOP base want to see, it gives them the motivation to be as mean and nasty as they can. Remember politics work in cycles. Let's not too carried away, eventually the GOP may very well be back in power. Let's show the GOP and the world how bi-partisan politics can work, and let's get away from this red state, blue state crap.

You don't know that. Not unless you are her doctor, in which case you just violated professional ethics. Laura Bush is a graceful and elegant lady who happened to fall in love with somebody who turned out to be a horrible president. None of this is her fault. Leave her alone. (And no, I am not a repub, I voted Clinton, Clinton, Gore, Kerry, Obama.)

Was it "graceful and elegant" when she tried to run over her boyfriend?

i know nothing of this woman and i havent read the article but, from the photo alone it appears to me she has hardly a notion of human quality left in her. sad, i hope she recovers someday from a life a lies.

This is a ridiculous comment.

"I know nothing of this woman..."

"I haven't read the article..."

"[judging] from the photo alone it appears she has hardly a notion of human quality left in her."

"I hope she recovers someday from a life of lies."

Wow. I really shouldn't even retort because your words speak of your biased ignorance more than I could ever elucidate. First off, it should go without saying that you should not make definitive statements on something than you (admittedly) know nothing about. Second, does it not strike you as exceedingly superficial to take a picture -- which is a mere split-second snapshot of a person -- and make a sweeping generalization about that person's character? As for "a life of lies" -- how is she responsible for her husband's political actions? I've met Laura Bush. She is an honest, hard-working, kind, thoughtful HUMAN being. She has dedicated much of her time and effort towards literacy programs for our fellow Americans. Do not lay judgement of her husband on her feet.
