"Leave It To Beaver" Actor To Show Sculpture At The Louvre

Tony Dow

LOS ANGELES — Eat your heart out, Eddie Haskell. Tony Dow, best known as the actor who portrayed The Beav's big brother, Wally, in the '50s TV series "Leave It to Beaver," will have one of his abstract sculptures on display at the Louvre.

Several sculptors from the Karen Lynne Gallery _ including Dow _ will have their works shown at the historic art museum in Paris as part of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts exhibition.

"Having something shown at the Louvre is about as good as you can get," said Dow, who lives in Los Angeles, "especially when it's a juried show like this where there's a panel of judges who pick the pieces to be in the exhibition. I'm a little humbled by the whole thing but grateful nonetheless."

Dow, who has also worked as a director and visual effects producer on several TV shows, has been painting and sculpting since he was a teenager. The 63-year-old artist's sculpture that will be shown at the Louvre from Dec. 11 to Dec. 14 is titled "Unarmed Warrior," and is a bronze figure of a woman holding a shield.

"Of course, I'm really proud of 'Leave It to Beaver' and my directing career in television," said Dow. "Those are great accomplishments. I'm really proud of them, but this is interesting because I don't think they know anything about that at the Louvre."

Congrats Tony!!!

I know that he will always be known as "Wally", but I think it is wonderful that his sculpture is receiving such acclaim.

We should all be happy for him.

Gee Wally, if somebody doesn't like your art maybe me and Lumpy can go clobber them. Or have Eddie Haskell give them the business.

Sorry to rain on Tony Dow's parade, but he's not up there with Leonardo quite yet. His sculpture is in fact part of a commercial exhibition that will be held not at the Louvre, but at the Carrousel du Louvre, an underground shopping mall adjacent to the Louvre that also houses a Virgin Megastore, a branch of Sephora and a Tie Rack. There are often such exhibitions there, as well as fashion shows, bridal shows and the like. By the way, why shouldn't the AP -- and the Huffington Post -- check stories like this before they run them??

hey eric11, did you just join huffington post in order to dump on tony dow or something? i see your entry date as october 08 and that you've posted twice so far, so this is one of your first.

i mean, say whatever you will, of course, but i am wondering why the nasty tone? OK. so it's next to the louvre. did you really think that tony dow was trying to get over on anybody?

and you know what? even if his sculpture was shown only in the virgin megastore in paris, or only in sephora, it's still quite an achievement. you know what i mean? it's all good.

suggestion? lighten up, brother eric. no reason to get all worked up here. OK. the story isn't nailed down in every detail, but it's a piece filled with nostalgia and good wishes for tony. a lot of people really loved him. he's like part of the family. a light touch would go a long way here. nobody was chasing around to find the sculpture police. no reason for you to volunteer to play the role either.

i wish tony well. ps i looked at the web site with photos of the work. very well done. thoughtful and serious work. very professional. gorgeous photos, too. unarmed warrior even could be a meditation on the oscar statue, perhaps, among many other things. i liked it.

"Gee Wally. Now that you're a famous artist with junk in the Louvre and everything, maybe we can finally get our own rooms!"

Golly, Wally!

I wanna love it.

But to me it doesn't look like a warrior, or a woman, or a shield.

However, experts "got it," so CONGRATULATIONS to you.
