Lindsay Lohan is happy Barack Obama got elected after campaigning for him this year. But, she referred to the President-Elect with a mumbled adjective at the beginning of an interview with Access Hollywood's Maria Menounos that some say is offensive. Does she say "good" or "colored?"

"It's an amazing feeling. It's our first [mumble] president."

Perez

She may have said colored - I really couldn't tell. The point she was making however was a positive one. If she didn't know that was an outdated and to many an offensive term, then she certainly does now. Honestly, I think she was just really tired and was having trouble with a bunch of her words. She also seemed pretty nervous. The woman is trying to do good with her life. She put her opinions out there during the election, told people to get out and vote, got politically active and is now doing work that benefits charity. I don't get why people continue to harshly scrutinize and criticize everything this woman does.

There's absolutely now way she said colored. The question mark in the title of the article says it all. The authors wanted to create something out of nothing. Unfortunately, they succeeded. But how sad it is that The Huffington Post saw fit to add a "poll" into the mix. Perez and Defamer are exploiters. Anything that brings attention to their websites is good for them, regardless of who it defames. The Huffington Post should not be following their lead.

no - when i saw this originally somewhere else i kept going back to see if that's what she said. i think she realized what she was saying (couldn't think of the correct word) so she kind of half-stopped herself and slurred her way through it so it came off as odd sounding.

other than it being an old fashioned word, who cares? i think it's because it was a term used during the time of segregation and it's just plain odd. my grandmother uses that word.

She is only 22 so I guess I will give her a pass, but who raised this woman?

For those of you asking "colored" is a term that harkens back to the segregated south and most african american or blacks (those being the socially acceptable terms) will tell you they are not colored (purple, blue? green....) but just darker. If I recall correctly from African American Studies class in college, using that term has not been politically correct since the 1970's and is considered an insult.

I remember when age 22 meant you were on your own and had to either grow a brain or have a trust fund...never occured to me that being a star was an alternative to both....

Books lie. I am African Amerian and I am not the least bit insulted. I have had plenty of conversations with older "White" people who use that term and it doesn't bother me in the least. My Grandmother referred to herself as colored up until she died in the early 90's. Besides, I think Lindsey said "cool". And who cares! Can't we all just get along!

here latest news

Carla Sims, communications director for the NAACP in Washington, D.C., came to Lindsay Lohan’s defense today following an on-camera interview with “Access Hollywood” in which Lohan called president-elect Barack Obama ‘colored’ and thinks that the media’s lambasting of the starlet is only to create controversy.

“Sometimes you have to look at the intent…but the word ‘colored’ isn’t derogatory,” Sims said in a phone interview. “Clearly she’s [Lohan] an Obama supporter.”

Internet news sites and blogs have taken a critical tone of LiLo’s use of the word ‘colored’. Some sites have even called the term “offensive” and “ a rather unfortunate comment.”

“There’s really no problem with what she said,” Sims said. “In her excitement, she was acknowledging that color was not a barrier in the populous choosing Obama.”

“The term ‘colored’ is not derogatory,” Sims continued. “They chose the word ‘colored’ because it was the most positive description commonly used at that time. It’s outdated and antiquated but not offensive.”

Person of color would have been better. I was just stunned that a 22 year old would use that word to describe Obama's ethnicity. "Colored" hasn't been widely used to describe blacks/Afr. Amer. in about a generation or so. It's strange to me that the term was part of her vocabulary.

Man, what's with the moderation around here, all I asked was how is "black" less offensive than "colored"? And it keeps disappearing.

Why is "black" less offensive than "colored"? This is stupid.

It's outdated and used by segregationist. It also shows a disrespect for a commmunity that has endured (and continues to endure) oppression at the hands of US system. Just because Obama won, it doesn't mean we can make light of those still struggling and treated differently because of race.

And if you still don't get it, which it seems like you don't, then think of basic terms of respect for others. Imagine: you meet William, and say, "Hey, can I call you Bill?"

Bill responds, "No. Call me William."

You say, "Okay, Bill." You've shown disrespect.

The African-American community has voiced a desire to be addressed as such. It's willfully ignorant to ignore that.

Yes, I agree. If I hear someone use the word "colored", I cringe. It reminds me of the seventies. That was the word I remember everyone used in speaking about African-Americans back then.

I thought it wasn't acceptable anymore.

It's not stupid. The word has history and bad associations. Try to get a clue before labeling things "stupid" as it just reflects back on your own ignorance.

At first I was a little dismayed to read other comments stating that Lohan looks like a 40-year old.... but she does! And even if Lohan said 'colored,' as a black person I'm willing to accept that it was just an insensitive slip given her past support of Obama. But this clip shows why the Obama campaign did not accept Lohan's request to do some campaigning on his behalf.

Again, why is "black" any less offensive than "colored"?

It isn't, actually.

Well, "colored" implies that 'white' is universal, normal, or the prototype and anything darker is "colored" in. Its a very "white centric" title. To contrast, a black centric title for white people might be "bleached" people or "erased" people.
I don't think "black" is as offensive as "colored" because it is not as culturally biased. Saying someone is black, to me is no less offensive than saying someone is white. Its not centered in any specific cultural viewpoint. Though it is still stupid.

Let me try again, since my initial comment didn't appear....

I said, that, as an African American, I am less bothered by her use of the word "colored" than I am by her inability to put a sentence together and her weird body language. She doesn't seem to be in a totally together place mentally; looks like she might need to consider rehab again.

I agree with your comments, DebofMD. She did seem a little out of whack and yes I noticed the strange body language as well. I think her mumbling the word "colored" is a little weird, but I also think the media exploitation of BS issues such as this is rediculous. She's a loser - who cares what she said or didn't say? Not I.

Give the girl a break. She supported Obama and if she did say "colored", it's just an anachronistic term which makes it more strange than offensive as far as I'm concerned.

Colored is not only out dated but it can be very offensive. I don't think she meant for it to be taken that way, but it is ignorant in any case.

She's like 20 years old, and she supported Obama. I'm pretty sure she wasn't even a twinkle in her daddy's eye the last time "colored" was the common term for African-Americans. I understand how it could be offensive, but try to take it with a grain of salt. She obviously meant no malice by it.

That's the point, she is too young to be using the word innocently. Where did she get that from? She said it like she uses it regularly. It's an antiquated term, only used in a derogatory manner these days, to put Black folks "in their place". The collective IQ in that room between her & Maria was probably equal to that of a goldfish. She's an idiot & should just keep her mouth shut. Just a fair weather fan, who probably couldn't tell you one thing Obama stood for. I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't even vote. She's just trying to come off as someone of substance...guess that worked out for her...LOL...

She said it -- and she wasn't sure what to say, that's why she mumbled it. Why would anyone say "colored." Colored does hold a negative connotation. She didn't mean it in a mean way, but it does demonstrate that she has no kind of connection w/ any person of color for someone to say colored. And it does showcase how ignorant people are, if she is that young (21) and using that word (which hasn't been widely used in the last 20 years).
