Obama's Afghan War Plans May Run Into Weary Public, Deficits

Staff Sergeant Brendan Kearns went through urban combat training six months ago with the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division, preparing for a planned return to Iraq. In January, his brigade is heading to Afghanistan instead.

While Iraq has long dominated headlines, Afghanistan will demand more immediate attention, as President-elect Barack Obama becomes the first commander-in-chief since Richard M. Nixon in 1969 to take charge during wartime.

I don't see why we need to spend endless money and lives to occupy the endless mountains of Afghanistan.
A few raids here and there may be fine but an occupation just spreads us too thin and gives the enemy too many easy targets. We are going bankrupt and its not just a coincidence this happened while trying to sustain two wars on the opposite side of the planet from us.

Well then, I suppose it's a good thing that a) we're not an empire, and b) our country is not looking to conquer them.

Obama foolishly is looking to "win" in a region of the world that has never been significantly under the rule of law, it's a fools errand. Hopefully, he'll do just what he said and pull tens of thousands of US military from Iraq where we are winning and send them into Afghanistan where no one has ever won.

The Pentagon is the one advising Obama to make cuts, not like we'll go after basic equipment, just do like Eisenhower and cut off these costly weapons development programs and bloated contracts instead that will probably never see the light of day anyway.
