Obama

At a briefing before well over 100 reporters, John Podesta, the co-chair of Barack Obama's White House transition, announced three priorities for the interim period and laid out just how comprehensive the effort would be.

The transition team will operate off a budget of $12 million ($5.2 million has been appropriated by Congress, the rest will be raised separately through individual donations of under $5,000), employ 450 people and operate out of offices in Washington D.C. and Chicago. Already, Podesta reiterated, the team has granted 100 interim security clearances.

As for the priorities - they resembled the same major interests Obama announced repeatedly on the campaign trail.

• The team, Podesta said, would be "laying the groundwork in stabilizing the economy and putting Americans back to work."
• They "also will be engaged as is required and necessary in national security issues that remain constant throughout the transition."
• And, of course, there is "the task of building a government."

Podesta called for an accelerated process when it comes to appointing potential cabinet members, saying that past "expedited" efforts by president-elects were not fast enough for this go-around. As such, he called on both parties in Congress, the current administration and relevant agencies to work together to help get a team in order, quickly.

"So far that has moved smoothly," Podesta said. "We anticipate that we will be able to both make appropriate selections, and get those people through the clearance process, which sometimes can get bogged down. There will be adequate recourse devoted by the FBI and other agencies."

"We are hopeful that we can do a good deal better than previous administrations," he added. "And frankly, if you look at the findings of the 9/11 Commission, we need to do a lot better."

Later in the briefing session, Podesta was asked about one cabinet position in particular: the Secretary of Defense. Reports have surfaced in recent days that Obama was considering keeping the current occupant of that post, Robert Gates, in office. Podesta did not hint which way Obama stood on the matter, saying only that a review for that position was taking place.

"He has great respect for Secretary Gates," he said, "but beyond that he intends to engage, as I suggested, across the board with the agencies."

At the meeting Podesta also announced what the campaign calls the strictest, and most far reaching ethics rules of any transition team in history. The rules, which were reported a few weeks ago by the Huffington Post, are:

• Federal Lobbyists cannot contribute financially to the transition.
• Federal lobbyists are prohibited from any lobbying during their work with the transition.
• If someone has lobbied in the last 12 months, they are prohibited from working in the fields of policy on which they lobbied.
• If someone becomes a lobbyist after working on the transition, they are prohibited from lobbying the Administration for 12 months on matters on which they worked.
• A gift ban that is aggressive in reducing the influence of special interests.

Smart and efficient, just like his campaign.

It will be fantastic to see him hit the ground running.

And with lots of lobbyists, just like he said he would NOT have.

Obama waters down his own rules on lobbyists before he's even in office. During the campaign Obama said "no lobbyists would work in his administration" and now there already on the transition team. From AP "Aides to President-elect Obama, who said lobbyists would not work in his White House, said Tuesday that lobbyists could serve in his transition so long as their activities do not involve areas of policy they have tried to influence in the past year." The hypocrisy is shocking.

7 days away from the election and already some are giving up . This is going to be a long haul if the USA can be 'saved' at all . This is a real big mess we are in . I expect Obama to get people with experience in sec positions and then they leave in about 2 years when , hopefully , we will have some young turks to kick off the next phase . Oh little girl if u are afraid of the broken prisoners from Git mo u have no concept of what we are capable of . The Generals know that Gitmo hurts us more that it hurts our enemy. THINK put yourself in someone-else's shows. Solve problems ,we tried blowing stuff up and that just doesn't work.

LOL!
Let's invent a pretext for invading a country, invade the country, rename it 'Douchebagaria' and send all the GOP Talibans there. Proclaim it kingdom, so W and Her Shrillness will be the Royal Family of Douchebagaria.

gees, i wonder who broke it?

there are probably half a million Republicans out there licking their lips at this cost, but i'd rather spend some money on the front end to make sure it's done right, then say... have Rove and company pick names out of a hat.

I donated again to Obama to help the DNC and this transition. I understand that Obama is using someof the donations to help pay off other candidates campaign debts including HRC. I think that this is responsible and the act of a leader of the Democratic Party.

But I actually have this last week shifted my campagin donations that were going to Obama to my Local Food Bank because I am going to do my part to effect change. My husband contacted the VA about volunteering with them to help Vets. And then there is donations for the holidays to serving Vets. Let's remember them on this day of remembrance for what the vets have sacrificed and done in service to all of us.

In the days to come I want to help Obama turn this country around. I am not gonna just sit back and talk, I want to get out there and help. I may take up tutoring math and science at jr and hi school level

We are reducing our energy consumption and trying to become more energy efficient on what we do use. We are reducing our consumerism and aiming for a simpler life with healthy doses of service to our community, environmental activism and continuing enlightenment on all issues. If we can change at 56 and 60 then anyone can. Thank you President Elect Barack HUSSEIN Obama for your inspirational firing us up.

Congratulations on being in the top 5 percent of the population in our country that will see their taxes go up when Bush's taxcuts expire.

Since I'm not in that top 5 percent income bracket, I'd be more than happy to contribute to helping President-Elect Obama get his administration up and running. I'm one of those who contributed to his campaign, and I will continue to support MY President in any way that I can.

Actually, I'm not, but that $250K mark kind of kept creeping down as the campaign went along................or didn't you notice? Or do you think only the "rich" will pay for social programs. Newsflash: If you make $50k, you are "rich" compared to the person making $15k. But by all means, send your money, its great you have that kind of disposable income at hand.

Actually, a lot of jobs started shifting to Mexico and China under Clinton's watch, but I guess he doesn't get hammered on that because there was a Republican congress. Just like the current economic congress is all Bush's fault because there is a Republican congr...........waitaminute......

If you criticize whites too harshly they'll block your comment. You should try making a sly racial joke or slur against blacks or latinos, it'll go thru fine. No prob. . . .

Some interesting observations about most Republicans:

They are: Always Right but NEVER WRONG.

Even when they are WRONG they are RIGHT.

Apology isn't in their vocabulary.

Big Government is but a catch phrase that really means:

"We don't believe that government in any form, should do anything, least of which would be to help people"

BUT:

We believe that even if we don't believe in government,we should always be elected!

It is my goal to get in touch with someone from the Obama administration and share with them my desire to be a part of his inauguration by reciting a poem I wrote called “We Must Change,” and I kindly ask for your help in doing so.
Go to youtube and do a search for "thinkverybig" and watch all of those videos. The one called "We Must Change" would be fitting to recite at Obama's Inauguration

Why can't we get rid of ALL lobbying? Or at least lobbying that involves bribes, gifts, or threats. They could just try to PERSUADE or CONVINCE people, based on the merits of their arguments, not bribe them.

There IS a place for lobbying: Representing important issues that would otherwise be ignored by the electorate and the government. Obviously the lobbying industry has gone awry and has become far to powerful.

I work with a lobbyist for Physicians for Social Responsibility and our guy lobby's political leaders and testifies as an expert for industries that wish to label their milk rBST or rBGH free, because Monsanto (now Elanco) has tried to ban allowing consumers the right to know thru labeling that some milk does NOT contain this terrible hormone.

Some lobbyists are good guys.
