Obama

At a briefing before well over 100 reporters, John Podesta, the co-chair of Barack Obama's White House transition, announced three priorities for the interim period and laid out just how comprehensive the effort would be.

The transition team will operate off a budget of $12 million ($5.2 million has been appropriated by Congress, the rest will be raised separately through individual donations of under $5,000), employ 450 people and operate out of offices in Washington D.C. and Chicago. Already, Podesta reiterated, the team has granted 100 interim security clearances.

As for the priorities - they resembled the same major interests Obama announced repeatedly on the campaign trail.

• The team, Podesta said, would be "laying the groundwork in stabilizing the economy and putting Americans back to work."
• They "also will be engaged as is required and necessary in national security issues that remain constant throughout the transition."
• And, of course, there is "the task of building a government."

Podesta called for an accelerated process when it comes to appointing potential cabinet members, saying that past "expedited" efforts by president-elects were not fast enough for this go-around. As such, he called on both parties in Congress, the current administration and relevant agencies to work together to help get a team in order, quickly.

"So far that has moved smoothly," Podesta said. "We anticipate that we will be able to both make appropriate selections, and get those people through the clearance process, which sometimes can get bogged down. There will be adequate recourse devoted by the FBI and other agencies."

"We are hopeful that we can do a good deal better than previous administrations," he added. "And frankly, if you look at the findings of the 9/11 Commission, we need to do a lot better."

Later in the briefing session, Podesta was asked about one cabinet position in particular: the Secretary of Defense. Reports have surfaced in recent days that Obama was considering keeping the current occupant of that post, Robert Gates, in office. Podesta did not hint which way Obama stood on the matter, saying only that a review for that position was taking place.

"He has great respect for Secretary Gates," he said, "but beyond that he intends to engage, as I suggested, across the board with the agencies."

At the meeting Podesta also announced what the campaign calls the strictest, and most far reaching ethics rules of any transition team in history. The rules, which were reported a few weeks ago by the Huffington Post, are:

• Federal Lobbyists cannot contribute financially to the transition.
• Federal lobbyists are prohibited from any lobbying during their work with the transition.
• If someone has lobbied in the last 12 months, they are prohibited from working in the fields of policy on which they lobbied.
• If someone becomes a lobbyist after working on the transition, they are prohibited from lobbying the Administration for 12 months on matters on which they worked.
• A gift ban that is aggressive in reducing the influence of special interests.

I checked the names on a list of potential appointments suggested by some writer, 90 % of the names showed up on the Council on Foreign Relations current membership list. Why doesn't Obama just save the money and let CFR appoint his administration!

This is not CHANGE, Mr. Obama, this CFR shadow government staffed the administrations from Carter onward!

Check the words "potential" and "suggested by some writer". This means PE Obama has not written the list.

We really must be careful not to jump on every "writer's" innuendos about what Obama will or won't do. The way the right divides us is by stirring up this kind of "doubt". My new rule: if Obama didn't say it, it ain't so.

Too bad he didn't keep his word regarding his FISA vote and accepting public campaign financing.

I still DO care. While I wasn't happy about Obama's vote on the FISA thing, I respect his reasons for doing so. Do you even KNOW his reasons?

Public financing? We, the members of the public who supported him, financed his campaign. No taxpayer money, only those who chose to contribute. You don't have to whine about your hard-earned dollars going to pay for the campaign of a person you obviously don't like.

Any other problems you'd like to discuss? Huummmm?

He didn't give his word on public financing , he just allowed McCain and the republicans to foolishly assume he would be suckered into the republicans game of collecting hugely from lobbyists, corporations and the wealthy before the convention and then accepting public campaign financing after with a strong tilt towards republicans having the largest war chest. You do know there is a difference between saying maybe or possibly. I bet you are so much fun whining when someone bluffs you at poker.

Quit your whining, he didn't fall for your parties usual game tha they invented. This is same lame blame game where McCain kept blaming Obama for McCains negative and scurrilous and vapid attacks becasue he wouldn't do town halls. Yeah right Town Halls where McCain packed them with supporters who would ask questions like " OK were you with Ayers on September 3, 1995 planning a Muslim terrorist takeover? Do you have any proof you weren't and if you do are they in the tank for you?"

Where Will The $12 Million Come From?

WELL??

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ahaczm7Ahw

The New World Order is a bi-partisan event on the Hill.

Is it even a partisan event in the populace?

I think true progressives and true conservatives have more in common regarding U.S. sovereign and liberty than do the centrist-statist tools we have in office. The henchmen and henchwomen in Congress, the Courts, and the Media are borrowed, stolen, or owned, save a few.

WE THE PEOPLE, must come together and put aside the hegemonic takeover of our Nation. I've erred in comment and protocol here before, but mostly engage intelligently. But I beg of you, please put aside your thinking for a moment, get outside of the box and educate. Go to TownHall, read The Economist, listen to Marc Faber, Max Kaiser (who also voted for Obama), Peter Schiff, Jim Rogers. Find commonality and truth anywhere. Because its everywhere.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ahaczm7Ahw

Listen to the above. Schiff makes a fair assessment of politics and the economy. He isn't partisan. He isn't non-partisan or bipartisan. He is smart.

A healthy, productive organization is headed by a CEO who relates to a strong set of values and convictions in the leadership process. President-Elect Obama recognizes that values such as equitable treatment, honesty civility, courage, integrity, fidelity (to organizational mission), openness, sacrifice, loyalty, and humility must start form the top. He establishes from his first actions, explicit, formal expectations of the performance of his line and staff membership. The selfish, self-interest aspirations are to be subjugated to the mission, mandates and objectives of the American Organization.
The President will live by cherished, civilized values and his administrators and staff members will follow his lead in resurrecting and producing a great Administration. Such beginnings formulate a new chapter in profound leadership and organizational performance.

I wish people stop saying it is 270K per person. You have to consider office space, IT expenses for nation security, phones with secured line, payroll...etc. IT budget for my company is 50 million. So 12 million is understandable because of the expenses. It really isn't that much for 450 people.

But why is *any* kind of fundraising permitted? This part of the making of a president is governing, not campaigning. Congress should be paying the whole shot. You wouldn't make (or allow) donors to fund the white house staff after a president is sworn in. Why now?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:06 PM on 11/11/2008

The fundraising is to restock the DNC coffers. They expensed a lot of money towards the 50 state strategy to ensure that we got the increase in Senators that we did. More people gave to Barack then they did the DNC who was running on empty for much of the campaign. Elections are not just held every 4 years but there are 2 year races as well. Most of these are financed by the DNC.

Sarah Palin is a "Tremendous" self promoter and is a willing wind up lie spewer who hasn't the capacity to know a lie from the truth, and those who think she "represents them" - well that reveals a hell of a lot about them.

And that's not all. Now that she's had a taste of the national political scene and that kind of attention, we are stuck with her for 2012. She will never be President and she may not win the nomination of her party, but it's 100% certain that she will TRY for the
nomination. Even a person who has real humility would have his head turned by all the coverage she got; an arr.ogant person, and she is arr.ogant, would be twice as vulnerable. She's had a taste and now there's no stopping her.

And that means us having to listen to her again....{{{screech, screech}}}. I dread it. I think McCain should be pu.nished for ever introducing this woman to the national political scene.

so many Christians voted against Palin, because of her divisive hate rhetoric. My cousin is a holy roller (no offense Christians) & her Christian radio station played a dishonest misleading ad about Obama teaching children sex education, my cousin called, e-mailed, & faxed her complaint to them & eventually stopped listening all together. People tend to pick & choose what they want from the bible to fit their needs without understanding the book. Some Christians need to read Stolen Legacy by. George G.M. James & sources like to get half a clue.
