Obama

At a briefing before well over 100 reporters, John Podesta, the co-chair of Barack Obama's White House transition, announced three priorities for the interim period and laid out just how comprehensive the effort would be.

The transition team will operate off a budget of $12 million ($5.2 million has been appropriated by Congress, the rest will be raised separately through individual donations of under $5,000), employ 450 people and operate out of offices in Washington D.C. and Chicago. Already, Podesta reiterated, the team has granted 100 interim security clearances.

As for the priorities - they resembled the same major interests Obama announced repeatedly on the campaign trail.

• The team, Podesta said, would be "laying the groundwork in stabilizing the economy and putting Americans back to work."
• They "also will be engaged as is required and necessary in national security issues that remain constant throughout the transition."
• And, of course, there is "the task of building a government."

Podesta called for an accelerated process when it comes to appointing potential cabinet members, saying that past "expedited" efforts by president-elects were not fast enough for this go-around. As such, he called on both parties in Congress, the current administration and relevant agencies to work together to help get a team in order, quickly.

"So far that has moved smoothly," Podesta said. "We anticipate that we will be able to both make appropriate selections, and get those people through the clearance process, which sometimes can get bogged down. There will be adequate recourse devoted by the FBI and other agencies."

"We are hopeful that we can do a good deal better than previous administrations," he added. "And frankly, if you look at the findings of the 9/11 Commission, we need to do a lot better."

Later in the briefing session, Podesta was asked about one cabinet position in particular: the Secretary of Defense. Reports have surfaced in recent days that Obama was considering keeping the current occupant of that post, Robert Gates, in office. Podesta did not hint which way Obama stood on the matter, saying only that a review for that position was taking place.

"He has great respect for Secretary Gates," he said, "but beyond that he intends to engage, as I suggested, across the board with the agencies."

At the meeting Podesta also announced what the campaign calls the strictest, and most far reaching ethics rules of any transition team in history. The rules, which were reported a few weeks ago by the Huffington Post, are:

• Federal Lobbyists cannot contribute financially to the transition.
• Federal lobbyists are prohibited from any lobbying during their work with the transition.
• If someone has lobbied in the last 12 months, they are prohibited from working in the fields of policy on which they lobbied.
• If someone becomes a lobbyist after working on the transition, they are prohibited from lobbying the Administration for 12 months on matters on which they worked.
• A gift ban that is aggressive in reducing the influence of special interests.

I think with all that is facing him off the bat he is moving pretty steady. I think people are tripping because of the lobbyist he has on the transition team. What he said on the trail was that they would not RUN the white house which is very true. He didn't say they couldn't work. I like the restrictions he has put on them and I am sure he will make sure they are adheared too. He doesn't want to shut anyone out. You need lobbyist to fight for companies who are doing some good for the people and want to do good. There are good folks out there working but they have been ignored by Bush because he only listened too the big dealers for banks and oil. So it's been a week now and I think the Pres Elect is doing a good job. He is taking his time and that's a good thing. He is a thinker and planner so let him do his job.

He got around those federal lobbyist restrictions by letting spouses of lobbyists contribute, and state lobbyists as well.

If he wants to be transparent, he will disclose the names of all his donors, and tell us why he turned off the security system that would prevent most donor fraud.

$600 million needs to be audited. The campaign was soliciting foreign donors, and his website was set up to facilitate that.

Those are the 'strictest' rules ever? Seriously? Nothing in that list looks anything but common sense. It's astonishing that these are an unprecedented departure.

The source of the US's myriad problems is starting to become more clear.

What I call change is what Obama is doing. The ethics rules put in place, I am very very pleaxed to see someone finally say ethics and act the same way! Its abotu time after all the bulls""t we've had to endure over the past several years, the Republican years!!!

I think he is being smart and pulling in good people. Penny pinching on his team is not hte way to go. We want good people who will do an exceptional job. The time of mediocrity is over!!! I don't think he is spending $270, 000 per person. That is not a reasonable way to think about it. There is lots of travel expenses, meeting expenses, technology and office overhead expenses. I thinkit woudl be intersting to see what past administrations have done, adjusted for inflation.

In a speech last November in Spartanburg, S.C., Obama said: "I have done more to take on lobbyists than any other candidate in this race...I don't take a dime of their money, and when I am president, they won't find a job in my White House." But, the campaign is over so now it all depends on what the meanings of "White House" and job are.

Obama set the NO lobbyists standard, the election is over, it is no defense to compare Obama to McCain any more. Obama must be judged on his statements, policies and actions or in other words he must stand alone.

While I voted for Prez-elect O, I am a bit disgusted that $270,000 per person (i.e., $12 million/450 people) is being spent on his transition team. In these tough economic times and in a time of war, he should show some monetary restraint.

Moreover, if he really wants CHANGE, then, when it comes time for the post-inaugural celebrations, I suggest that Prez-elect and the rest of the Democratic party forego the multimillion dollar festivities and, instead, use that money for a greater common good.

Now, that's what I would call CHANGE.

What? Do you think quality people grow on trees? While I believe some would do it cheaper, some must be enticed to give up their "day jobs" where they can no doubt get that salary.

Also, it shows they are willing to be taxed under his new structure.

I remember Jimmy Carter was lampooned for turning down the White House thermostat and wearing sweaters. I don't want to see a repeat of that sort of mindset right now, like Obama conspicuously pinching pennies and doing things on the cheap. This is our country we're talking about. The new president has to be able to take over smoothly with no problems. Do you have any idea how complex this is?

And anyway, I looked again and I didn't see that the 12 million for the transition was slated for salaries only, so your $270,000 per person is not realistic.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:00 PM on 11/11/2008

Lobbyists, lobbyists, lobbyists and Obama's disciples don't say a word. Obama waters down his own rules on lobbyists before he's even in office. During the campaign Obama said no lobbyists would work in his administration and now there already on the transition team.

From AP "Aides to President-elect Obama, who said lobbyists would not work in his White House, said Tuesday that lobbyists could serve in his transition so long as their activities do not involve areas of policy they have tried to influence in the past year."

Isn't it a shame that Republicans are already jockeying to see who will run in 2012? I can honestly say that if my own party was doing such a thing during an inordinately tumultuous time, I would be very disappointed. It's one thing for Republicans to play "watch dog" and constructively criticize the new POTUS when need be, but it seems irresponsible to have this political horse race *at all times*. We don't need political games right now. We need heads to come together to work for solutions. But that's just too idealistic a perspective, I guess.
