I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Obama's brain trust continues to grow.

The president-elect has hired former Senate Armed Services Committee chairman Sam Nunn to help shepherd his Pentagon transition and former Secretary of State Warren Christopher would advise Obama on his State Department transition, reports the Associated Press:

Nunn, a former Georgia senator and veteran Democratic defense adviser, was once rumored as a potential running mate for Obama. Transition spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said Nunn will perform "an informal senior adviser role throughout the defense transition process."

Nunn's role has been described by others, speaking anonymously because the transition teams have not been announced, as the leader of Obama's defense transition. Similarly, a senior administration official said former Secretary of State Warren Christopher would advise Obama on his State Department transition...

Nunn and Christopher would be part of a national security brain trust for Obama that is heavy on former Clinton administration officials, including possible national security adviser James Steinberg, a former State Department official.

At the Pentagon, the large transition office would likely include former Clinton Navy Secretary Richard Danzig and former Clinton-era Pentagon comptroller Bill Lynn, officials said. The announcements are expected later this week...

Clinton Pentagon officials turned think tankers Michele Flournoy and Kurt Campbell are also mentioned as part of the Obama transition office at the Pentagon. Clinton-era State Department officials Wendy Sherman and Tom Donilon are mentioned in similar roles at State.

In addition, the Washington Post is reporting that the top intelligence officials in the Bush administration expect to be replaced despite recent speculation that Obama might keep them on to assure continuity in the department:

The nation's top two intelligence officers expect to be replaced by President-elect Barack Obama early in his administration, according to senior intelligence officials.

A number of influential congressional Democrats oppose keeping Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell and CIA Director Michael V. Hayden in their posts because both have publicly supported controversial Bush administration policies on interrogation and telephone surveillance. One Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee said there is a "consensus" view on the matter...

Both wish to remain on the job, officials say, though neither has said so publicly, and both think that their early departures could be seen as politicizing their offices and setting a precedent for automatic turnover when the White House changes hands. President Bush's decision to retain George J. Tenet, a Clinton appointee, as CIA director was seen inside the agency as a stabilizing move, after the CIA went through five directors in the 10 years following the Iran-contra affair...

John Brennan, head of the Obama intelligence transition team, is one of several names that have surfaced, including Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.), as possible replacements for McConnell or Hayden. Brennan, a former top CIA official who helped establish the National Counterterrorism Center as part of the 2004 reforms, left the agency in 2005 to become chief executive of the Analysis Corp., a Virginia consulting firm with intelligence contracts. He advised the Obama campaign on national security.

Brennan's transition deputy, Jami A. Miscik, was CIA deputy director for intelligence before leaving for Lehman Brothers. Brennan and Miscik rose in the CIA ranks under Tenet and left when he was replaced by former congressman Porter J. Goss (R-Fla.), Hayden's predecessor. Brennan and Miscik were first identified as intelligence transition team leaders by the Wall Street Journal.

Is that what you said to yourself in 2000? In 2004? I doubt it, seriously. So why should "we"?

I didn't like McCain. I don't like Obama. I don't know of many true conservatives in the leadership of the Republican party anymore. But if you think "we" are just going to roll over because "you" won, you are crazy.

I WILL say, however, that I'd like to give Obama the benefit of the doubt and I intend to watch what he does and hope like hell he does a good job. I'm just disappointed in his picks. Of course it is his right to choose who he wants, so oh well what the hell. It just doesn't look like change to me. More of the same. Just like the Republicans. More of the same.

----------------------------------------------->
I asked who you would [pick for your transition team. I am still waiting for a reply.

I would do exactly what Obama is doing. I would find the best talent out there that I believed would understand the problems we face and understand the process of Real solutions.

if your car is stuck, sometimes you have to "rock it back and forth" a few times to get out.
I am Not concerned that he has "Dipped Back" to use talent.

He has to get experts to take on these tasks and right now I trust Dem. experts over the Rep. experts.

Of course, I suppose he could call Joe the Plumber to take over as head of the CIA and maybe Sarah Palin as Sec. of State. That would be a change.

Actually, this is a good thing and I will tell you why. If Obamma puts in former Clinton staffers, we stand a better chance to out all of the secret deals Bush and Cheney had going on during thier tenure. Like I said, it all goes back to Kroll Industries. Follow the paper trail here. Kroll and the Bush administration were in cahoots to take down our economic system, control the media, thought process, and gag anyone that would dare speak out against them. It was the equivalent to a Hitler/Nazi regieme. Clinton's people will get the troops out of Iraq, only those needed for Aphganistan, and then bring them home. The war was a red herring, It was designed to distract us from the true reason behind it, that is a drug smuggling oporation smuggling heroin, coke, ect. Aphganistan is about the oil. 911 was a cover for the drug cartels, as the twin towers had numerous pieces of data linking Bush to the cartels, insider trading, ect. That's why they went down. Follow the paper trail.

McConnell and Hayden must be sent home from our government. They were perfectly willing to be part of a government that spied on US citizens and condoned torture. Hayden especially was willing to lie and take all kinds of abuse from congress to keep covering for the Bush administration. I say good riddance to both of them. They can be replaced with men who have some scruples and who will stand strong for America. We are not going to feel apologetic during the Obama presidency. We can be proud of what he stands for, because he stands for us!

The louder the opposition screams, the more certain you can be that Obama is on the right path. This transition team is well suited for the specific purpose that they were chosen.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:05 AM on 11/12/2008

What if former support becomes the opposition and starts screaming too???

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:10 AM on 11/12/2008

You have a point. However, the transition team may or may not become appointees. Their job is to make recommendations to Obama about who to hire in key positions. Obama will set the agenda and in the interview process there will attempts to see who can be counted on to support the agenda. Of course people can, and often do, say anything to get the job.

One reason I think the Clinton people will not pose too much of a problem is because Obama had to make a deal with Hillary and Bill after the primary for their support during the GE. Politics being what it is, they are now fully on board and they probably have something coming in return. Let's just say health care. Generally, they will do their part to keep their soldiers in line because it is all part of the deal.

The second reason I think this might be less of an issue than it appears is that Axelrod and Obamas other senior advisers are well aware of this potential pitfall and they are going to guard against this.

Lastly, Obama has shown no hesitation in letting people go when they screw up.

"Great presidents don’t move to the middle they move the middle to them by changing the conversation about government and implementing major new programs. That is what FDR did for liberal governance in the 1930s and Ronald Reagan for conservative governance in the 1980s.

"No political leader in the history of the government has gained major political success or produced fundamental changes in national policy by attempting to move to the middle. Rather the so-called “center” of American politics is the graveyard of mediocre one-term presidents like William Howard Taft, Herbert Hoover, George H. W. Bush, and Jimmy Carter. The centrist presidents Dwight Eisenhower and Bill Clinton won two terms in office, but they both lost control of Congress in their first term and failed to pass on the presidency to a candidate of their party."

The "middle" and the "mainstream" is are political artifices created to anoint certain ideology with the aire of perfect acceptibility to the masses. In reality, these artifices are by no means necessarily perfectly acceptable nor absolute.

With all due respect, President-elect Obama supports the same controversial programs. He voted in favor of the FISA bill that granted immunity for illegal activity of phone companies. When there is no rule of law, it matters not that we make laws.

The illegal (and that hasn't been adjudicated as far as I know) activity of the phone companies was at the request (or maybe order) of the Federal government. I thought going after them was a mistake, even though liberty and privacy issues are important to me. Congress should have gone after the Executive branch officials that made the demands.

The CIA is long overdue for a major house cleaning. Just read the controversial book, _The Human Factor: Inside the CIA's Dysfunctional Intelligence Counterculture_ written by a former CIA agent, Ishmael Jones. There are so many levels of bureaucracy in the CIA that nothing gets done. It doesn't serve the nation -- it serves the bureaucrats who run it who try to get all the federal funding they can. Keep in mind that the CIA failed to predict the decline and fall of the USSR even when it was falling!

P.E. Obama is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

Just because he ran on a campaign of change, doesn't mean he cannot seek the advice of those who have been in the trenches. Some of the people mentioned, like Warren Christopher, are basically walking history books. If Saint Sarah had been elected, would people be in an uproar because she was consulting with Bushies? Would that make her less mavericky? It’s ridiculous to complain that someone is against change because he/she relies on history as a learning tool.

How can McConnell and Hayden complain that their pending terminations with “politicize” their positions? They were hired for political reasons.

I agree with your points completely. I thought the same thing of Warren Christopher. He is quite familiar to me, beyond the Clinton era, in that he appears on PBS News Hour with Jim Lehrer from time to time. He always offer sane and sage commentary, he has a vast knowledge and experience base, he is NOT controversial or hyperbolic.

In fact his approach meshes nicely with Barack Obama's. In this current atmosphere of crises on so MANY fronts, we cannot afford for Obama to tap new faces to give them a shot for the sake of "change". There WILL be change, obviously, it is just that the changes will be guided by people who've managed crises on a national and international scale. I find that reassuring actually.

Obamma needs to clean house of any and ALL former Bush cabinet members connected to the CIA. Then he needs to GUT the CIA and strip them of any and all connections to KROLL industries. Folks, its time America does its homework on Kroll and its connection to Bush and Blackwater, the CIA and its connections to the drug cartels and underground weapons markets. Ditto for CFR. Until he does that, we will hav e more of the same, even with Obamma in office. WHY? Kroll is poison. Itsa company that hides under others that uses high tech security to spy on the public, conduct special ops actions here and abroad. Its many connections to the CIA, Bush administrations past and present means they still have a means to control the public, media ect. Very dangerous organization, and Bush and Cheney have been shareholders and CEO's in absentia of this company. Obamma needs to watch his back until this happens, seriously. I don't trust them. I don't trust the CIA or the FBI until its cleaned house.

True story.

For the last three years in a row, I've gone to a particular Office Max with the kids for back to school supplies. Why this particular one? It is always empty - so when my *kids with issues* start acting like the painintheasses they can sometimes be - I'm not embarrassed.

There is a mall just as empty that I drag them to for back-to-school clothing as well - this isn't new, this has been going on for at least three years.
