ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Republican Sen. Ted Stevens, a titan of Alaska politics convicted of felony charges last month, fell behind by three votes Wednesday as the count resumed in his re-election bid.

Democrat Mark Begich, the two-term mayor of Anchorage, began Wednesday down more than 3,200 votes but closed the gap as officials resumed counting early and absentee ballots. The tally was 125,019 to 125,016.

Neither side expected to be able to claim victory Wednesday. By late afternoon, officials had counted more than 44,000 of the roughly 90,000 outstanding ballots.

"Right now we're cautiously optimistic," said Bethany Lesser, spokeswoman for the state Democratic Party. "There's obviously more votes to come in, but it goes to show how hard we worked to get the vote out early and how important that was."

Stevens' campaign did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Last month, a federal jury in Washington convicted Stevens of lying on Senate disclosure forms to conceal more than $250,000 in gifts and home renovations from an oil field services company.

That might have spelled quick political doom for a lesser figure, but the 84-year-old Stevens is revered here for his decades of public service _ and especially for scoring the state enormous sums of federal money.

Begich would be the first Democrat to win a Senate race in Alaska since the mid-1970s and a win would put his party one step closer to a filibuster-proof 60-vote majority in the Senate. Democrats are also trying to unseat Republicans in unresolved contests in Georgia and Minnesota.

Fellow senators have called on Stevens to resign, and he could face expulsion if he doesn't _ in which case a special election would be held to determine his replacement. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, fresh from her failed run at the vice presidency, said Wednesday she'd be interested in serving in the Senate.

Should the result remain close a recount is possible. In Alaska, the losing candidate or a collection of 10 voters has three days to petition for a recount unless the vote was a tie, in which case it would be automatic.

If the difference between the candidates is 0.5 percent of the total votes cast, the state pays for the recount, to be started within three days of the recount petition. The state Elections Division has 10 days to complete the recount.

Per Silver:

"As we've pointed out and has been pointed out elsewhere, the remaining votes come from Begich-friendly districts. Mark Begich is now an overwhelming favorite to win the Alaska Senate seat."

Thank you, Alaska!

All the senators will have to face their voters back home, no matter what party affiliation. Should they obstruct a popular president while the country is in a serious crisis.

Woe to that poll.

According to Nate Silver at 538.com

Begich Leads By 814 Going Into Thursday
The Alaska Board of Elections has finally updated (pdf). With 17,728 votes counted since the previous update, Democrat Mark Begich has the lead over Republican Ted Stevens, 132,196 to 131,382.

More votes to be counted tomorrow and possibly Friday.

As we've pointed out and has been pointed out elsewhere, the remaining votes come from Begich-friendly districts. Mark Begich is now an overwhelming favorite to win the Alaska Senate seat.

I haven't lived in Alaska long enough to give any details about this, but aside from many people feeling beholden to Stevens, there is a large contingent of folks that believes that Begich is also a crook. He has, so I'm told, pocketed big bucks from shady commercial real estate deals. That accounts for the third-party votes.

Seriously, dirty politics is blatently practiced up here--I was stunned when I moved here. Kudos to the FBI--it may be the catalyst to the redemption of Alaska's public service sector.

Just to be technical, If Begich, Franken AND Jim Martin in GA win the Dems will have 60 WITHOUT COUNTING LIEBERMAN.

If Begich and Franken win...don't forget that Bernie Sanders almost always votes with the Dems so they would still have a virtual 60 WITHOUT LIEBERMAN.

If only Begich wins, as it now looks like he may, the Dems will have 58 plus Sanders and Lieberman to make 60.

Even so, I think some moderate Repubs like Olympia Snowe and those up for re-election in 2010 will be far more likely to support Obama's agendas than look like roadblocks needing to be replaced with Dems, I don't see the lockstep of GOP Senators as likely under the now splintered GOP.

Bottom line, if Begich wins, we have our 60 votes with Lieberman.

For those wanting to have Lieberman slammed, let him serve our purposes now on a short leash and remember what Khan said to Kirk in Star Trek II, "Revenge is a dish best served cold."

I wish, but we'd need Lieberman to get to 60, even if we win all three races.

If they keep him this coming week, they'll never take action against him.

Really, he's one vote. If they kept him, and could somehow magically make him disappear from sight and sound. I could be at peace with that. But as soon as I see his mug and hear his disingenuous voice. I see red, and my blood pressure soars.

Can they hide him for four years somehow?

Who knew ol' Khan read 18th Century French Literature?

Pierre Ambroise Francois Choderios de LaClos originally said it in his 1782 book," Les Liasons Dangereuses"

"La vengeance est un plat qui se mange froid".

Wait...

I see that the current totals for Senate, not including the projected for Alaska, is already at 57. That means if Alaska, Minnesota, and Georgia go to the Dems, that will be 60. So we don't need Liebermann right?

The 57 includes Sanders and Lieberman, Independents who caucus with the Democrats.

If we win all three races, Lieberman would make 60 in the Dem caucus -- theoretically a filibuster-proof majority. I want him gone, too, but Sen. Bayh made an excellent case on Rachel Maddow today for giving him one last chance.

That is the reason we need major help here in Georgia. I heard on ABC that we are getting help from some of Baracks staff but, that's not enough. We need major ground help also, McCain will be campaigning for Saxby on 11/13/08, and the Rethuglicans are gearing up to fight dirty. It would great if Bill & Hillary would pay us a visit on behalf of Martin.

I believe that makes Joe #60, which is the worst possible scenario. it gives him all the power in the Senate. If they get this, look for a full-court press by the Democrats on Olympia Snowe and/or Susan Collins.

Lieberman wants to be gone, he's made that clear for the last two years. He must enjoy the senate falling all over themselves to keep him. No wonder he doesn't respect or fear the party.

I am going to restate this...

SARAH PALIN IS NOT GOING AWAY

Wish and whine all you want, she is not going away. Why do I say this?

Because the RNC lost most of their business and banking donor base... That leaves bundled mega-church money are their primary funding stream going forward.

Guess who controlls that funding stream??? Sarah Palin

If the RNC disses her, cuts her off, or in any way offends her supporters... She can pick up the phone, and with a word, the money stops flowing into the RNC bank accounts.

It is that simple... The base does not care if she is electable or not. They don't care about ethics violations, even criminal convictions... It does not matter to them.

And the problem is?

As long as Palin's in the picture, the GOP will remain offensive to independents and Dems, further bonding the new coalition.

History is passing the Evangelicals by and the longer they're the face of the GOP, the deeper it will sink.

I hope Sarah's in the picture a long, long time.

I can only hope that Palin is their nominee for anything... I suspect that someone in the RNC will figure it out that the base that Palin stirred up was not only too few, but turned away many that would have voted for McCain of 2000.

I'm trying to figure out how many votes Begich will need to avoid a recount, but there are some serious gaps of information. Last week HuffPo posted a story from Daily Kos that implied that there were a very large number of ballots (~100,000) missing or uncounted. I seems that they are now counting early ballots but we still don't know the total number of votes cast.

According to CNN polls, the percentage of registered voters who voted in 2008 is the same as in 2004. It might be 1% higher, but essentially the same because many Republicans stayed away from the polls this year :)

Assuming the same holds true in Alaska, then the number of votes cast in 2004 was 310,000. So let's assume 320,000 for 2008 to be on the safe side (?). A recount occurs if the margin between the two candidates is 0.5% or less of the total votes cast...

So 0.5% of 320,000 is 1,600 votes !!!

According to my informed guesstimate, Begich has to make up at least 1,600 votes in order to pass the recount hurdle. I also believe that Stevens can get a recount if he pays for it himself, but I'm not 100% certain of Alaskan law on this. I'm certain that there would be enough hard core Republicans "donors" and in the form of contractors/house builders who would front the cash for a recount if the margins were that close...
