John Mayer Variety Show Headed To CBS: Report

We've learned John Mayer will host a weekly variety show for CBS. And here's the deal. We know CBS would like to run the show as soon as possible -- the goal is the first quarter of 2009.

It will be a music, variety and sketch show in the '60s mold. Ken Ehrlich (who produces the Emmys and Grammys) will produce the show with Mayer.

60's variety show format? This will tank in 6 episodes or less. ABC and NBC rating will soar in that timeslot.

should be interesting to see how this plays out. the prime time variety show has been, if not dead, in a coma since the demise of the carole burnett show in the 70s. a few other efforts at reviving the genre (most notably dolly parton) have failed pretty miserably.

it'd be great to see a variety show in the vein of the one johnny cash had back in the early 70s. it was THE show to watch if you were wanted to see any musicians of interest at the time.

Good Lord...I can only hope that he does not wear the lime green Borat bathing sling that he was pictured wearing earlier this year in US magazine..­...that was just gross and beyond the YUCK factor.

According to the responses here, he's either clearly underrated or people hate his guts so much they've never really heard any of his music. As hilarious as he is I think this is a terrible idea, his on off show on VH1 was funny but it really just end up being over saturation. He's an excellent writer and should stick to it alongside the music...do­n't overplay your hand.

I sure won't. I was actually thinking that this show would just be another good reason to turn the TV off.

As what? He may be an overhyped celebrity and a sometimes annoyingly mannered vocalist, but he's also a first-rate musician. I'm hoping the latter will have some influence on this pending "variety show" -- perhaps it'll be along the lines of The Smothers Brothers, Johnny Cash, or even Glen Campbell way back in the day, in which case it might actually be worth watching.

I think John Mayer is an incredibly talented muscian - he gave one of the best live concerts I've ever seenn. He had a show briefly on VH1 a couple of years ago, and he has a really witty, quick sense of humor. All the elements would seem to be there for a successful show, but I just don't know that Americans will watch old time variety. Doesn't seem like it'll capture much attention unless they vote off a guest every week or bring in forensics teams to sweep the set for DNA. Good luck to him, though.
