As Senate Democrats prepare for a vote on Sen. Joseph Lieberman's fate in the party, the political tea leaves indicate that he will likely keep his post as chair of the Homeland Security and Government Reform Committee.

Over the past few days, a growing number of colleagues have gravitated to Lieberman's corner. The most prominent of them is President-elect Barack Obama. The Illinois Senator issued indications this past week that he would like Lieberman to remain in the caucus, but he didn't tip his hand one way or another when it came to the chairmanship.

Since then, Obama has reportedly had conversations with multiple Senate allies including Dick Durbin, Ted Kennedy, Clair McCaskill, and Chris Dodd. One person he hasn't talked to is Lieberman himself.

"They have not spoken," said spokesperson Stephanie Cutter.

Nevertheless, Lieberman does seem to be developing the support he needs to stave off any attempt to strip him of his homeland security post. In addition to Obama, it was reported on Thursday that Dodd and Sens. Tom Carper, Bill Nelson and Ken Salazar had formed a group that was pushing for an alternative way to punish Lieberman while keeping him in the caucus. Sen. Evan Bayh, meanwhile, took to the "Rachel Maddow Show" to explain why taking away Lieberman's homeland security position -- even if the Connecticut independent didn't follow through on his threat to flee the caucus -- would be a bad thing.

"[He] might decide to stay and be bitter," said the Indiana Democrat. "What would happen is from time to time we have close votes... If Lieberman doesn't know what to do and we've exacted revenge on him, I think we could expect the same in return."

Indeed, the lingering question surrounding Lieberman's fate is not so much if he will remain as committee chair, but who - if anyone - will vote for him to be stripped of this title. Obama, actually, will not have a vote on the matter. A Senate aide explains that the issue will be decided by "New Congress, new caucus, new members," meaning that the incoming class will have a voice in deciding Lieberman's fate but not the president or vice president elect.

Contacted by the Huffington Post, nearly every office of newly elected incoming Democrats said they either had not looked thoroughly enough at the matter, were deferring for the moment to Democratic leadership, or simply couldn't comment. Jeff Merkley of Oregon has expressed disappointment with Lieberman's campaign conduct, describing it as a "knife through my heart." But his office, too, said he wasn't taking a position on his soon-to-be colleague.

With so many balls still up in the air, several aides said they did not expect a nail-biting vote next week vis-à-vis Lieberman's future. A position on what to do with his committee chairmanship will be forged, one source predicted, and the caucus would likely support it with minor dissension. One possibility, it seems, is a compromise punishment: to allow Lieberman to stay as chair of the Homeland Security and Government Reform Committee but take away a spot on either the Armed Services or Environmental and Public Works committee.

"There are people who clearly want to take some action and force some level of discipline," said a prominent adviser to Democratic leadership. "It is a complicated and delicate walk, but going forward one wants to keep him voting with the Dems as often as possible... My sense is there is a lot of discomfort and anger. On the other hand when passions cool and you see the margin that Obama won by you realize that Lieberman didn't have any impact. Even in the Jewish community, he was completely ineffectual in his advocacy for McCain."

This short essay does NOT show any kind of majority for Lieberman, just discussions. Keep up the push to concerned blogs and your political spokespersons. This is our government, if we would like to see Lieberman out (regardless of that incredible nutty talk about him becoming some wild card if he is hobbled,) we need to do all we can to remove him and keep the Democratic party moving forward and on message.

Our only choice is to make LIeberman's political life miserable. Like he's made ours. Show no mercy.

I don't know exactly how chairmanships are rewarded, but I would think there is an element of being rewarded for loyalty. Well Leiberman was anything but in the last two years. There is a lot of democrats who worked very hard to get the party back in Power, while he did the opposite. Sure he showed loyalty to his friend, but he also directly attacked his fellow democrats.
What does it say about his principles if he votes against what he belives in to spite if the chairmanship is taken away from him.
Has anybody considered what would have happened if the shoe was on the other foot and McCain had won.
This whole thing sounds a bit lkie politics as usual to me, I say boot him out.

Let me use a sports analogy to explain how I see the Lieberman issue. Imagine a coach coming in to take over a NFL team. One his assistant coaches starts appearing on the new with a prospective coach of another team. He is calling the new coaches philosophy "dangerous" and a "loser".
He appears to be ready to become an assistant coaches on the rival team. But the prospective coach does not get selected for the team. So the assistant coach comes back to the new coach and says
"You have to let me continue in my job because I have been an assistant coach here for years".
Now can the new coach expect the assistant to work hard to implement his coaching philosphy given that he finds is so against his own beliefs? Certainly not. And will his presence be disruptive to
putting together a winning team? Surely.

And given LIeberman and his own supporters statements, he would be compelled to support
Republicans in upcoming races against Democrats who do not support his positions.

And Washington wonders why it is held is such low regard. Starting to look like the Obama administration could be more of the same old *)&%,

Am I the only one who finds the following pretty bizarre? I mean here we are, 10 days after victory, and Joe the Traitor is just now getting around to "congratulating" our Team of winners? Yet the cowardly Senators in the Dem Senate, are doing their darndest to defend this Judas, and keep him not only in caucus, but in the chairmanship too? Who's side is the Democratic Senate on? Do we know?

"Sen. Joe Lieberman has reached out to President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden to arrange a congratulatory phone call, a Democratic aide tells The Crypt. The effort has led to a recent conversation between Biden and Lieberman. Lieberman is working to save his chairmanship of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee after backing John McCain for president. UPDATE: A Democratic aide called it “a congratulatory, friendly call that Senator Lieberman initiated.” http://www.politico.com/blogs/thecrypt/1108/Lieberman_reaches_out_to_Obama_chats_with_Biden.html

Wait a minute... they are considering allowing this tur.ncoat to retain his position because they are afraid he will be bitter and exact revenge by voting against them? Geesh! With Independents like this, who needs Republicans?

He campaigned to denie democrats the presidency. Isn't that reason enought to kick him out of the party? What if Obama had lost ? would they feel that he should remain in the parth?

Lieberman will go after Obama in a heartbeat and call for an investigation into Obama over whatever bogus right wing conspiracies the Limbaughs and Hannitys can spin off once they regroup. He stabbed Barrack in the back once and he'll do it again (for Isreal). The Democrats are acting wishy washy once again and will pay a price for it. Mark my words.

On Election Day I did vote for Obama, but went ahead and changed my party affiliation from
Democrat to independent. Yes, I will probably vote for lesser evil Democrats more often
than fear mongering Republicans in the future. However, I won't have the label Democrat on
my public record thanks to the cave-in tactics of Nancy Pelosi, i.e. "Impeachment is off the
table" and the perfidy of Joe Lieberman who those rascally expedience before principle Democrats are about to embrace. President Obama you owe that man nothing! Watch
your back!

I'm disgusted that they would even consider keeping Lieberman. He'll be gone in 2 years when we in CT vote him out, unless the Repugs vote him in again as they did last time. At the very least he should apologize publicly to Obama for contributing to the hateful rhetoric that put Barack and his family in danger.

LIE bermen is not to be trusted. He is the type to stab you in the back if he see's an opportunity for himself. Didnt anyone notice? The guy is what was wrong with Washington. He did a lousey job as it is, why keep him around? So what if he retires or goes to the dark side, we should get to work without him and make this a better planet. Judge him by his actions and the answer is clear

I don't know what Obama's thoughts are, but I hope he has a good reason, for wanting to keep traitor Joe on, after all the unforgivable remarks he made whilst brown nosing McCain.

What is it about politics we are not understanding here? Does no one remember what happened to Howard Dean? If you as a candidate have not, do not, and or will not, jump through the hoops set up by the "invisible men (and women just to be pc)", you WILL NOT become POTUS, Obama has been bought and paid for people, get over it! The time when "we the people" could have taken this nation back from special interests, the Military-Industrial-Scientific Complex are gone! They went away with an election three decades ago. From now on, you and I will be given a choice between two colors of the same flavor. Or, if you will, orange colored Coke, and green colored Pepsi. What is wrong with you all that you can not see that? CHANGE?!!!! As the new "Captain", I predict that Obama will call his first order out as "3 degrees left rudder"! So, we will go from a course of 97 degrees to one of of 94 degrees. Well, I must admit, that does qualify as "change", technically at least!
