As Senate Democrats prepare for a vote on Sen. Joseph Lieberman's fate in the party, the political tea leaves indicate that he will likely keep his post as chair of the Homeland Security and Government Reform Committee.

Over the past few days, a growing number of colleagues have gravitated to Lieberman's corner. The most prominent of them is President-elect Barack Obama. The Illinois Senator issued indications this past week that he would like Lieberman to remain in the caucus, but he didn't tip his hand one way or another when it came to the chairmanship.

Since then, Obama has reportedly had conversations with multiple Senate allies including Dick Durbin, Ted Kennedy, Clair McCaskill, and Chris Dodd. One person he hasn't talked to is Lieberman himself.

"They have not spoken," said spokesperson Stephanie Cutter.

Nevertheless, Lieberman does seem to be developing the support he needs to stave off any attempt to strip him of his homeland security post. In addition to Obama, it was reported on Thursday that Dodd and Sens. Tom Carper, Bill Nelson and Ken Salazar had formed a group that was pushing for an alternative way to punish Lieberman while keeping him in the caucus. Sen. Evan Bayh, meanwhile, took to the "Rachel Maddow Show" to explain why taking away Lieberman's homeland security position -- even if the Connecticut independent didn't follow through on his threat to flee the caucus -- would be a bad thing.

"[He] might decide to stay and be bitter," said the Indiana Democrat. "What would happen is from time to time we have close votes... If Lieberman doesn't know what to do and we've exacted revenge on him, I think we could expect the same in return."

Indeed, the lingering question surrounding Lieberman's fate is not so much if he will remain as committee chair, but who - if anyone - will vote for him to be stripped of this title. Obama, actually, will not have a vote on the matter. A Senate aide explains that the issue will be decided by "New Congress, new caucus, new members," meaning that the incoming class will have a voice in deciding Lieberman's fate but not the president or vice president elect.

Contacted by the Huffington Post, nearly every office of newly elected incoming Democrats said they either had not looked thoroughly enough at the matter, were deferring for the moment to Democratic leadership, or simply couldn't comment. Jeff Merkley of Oregon has expressed disappointment with Lieberman's campaign conduct, describing it as a "knife through my heart." But his office, too, said he wasn't taking a position on his soon-to-be colleague.

With so many balls still up in the air, several aides said they did not expect a nail-biting vote next week vis-à-vis Lieberman's future. A position on what to do with his committee chairmanship will be forged, one source predicted, and the caucus would likely support it with minor dissension. One possibility, it seems, is a compromise punishment: to allow Lieberman to stay as chair of the Homeland Security and Government Reform Committee but take away a spot on either the Armed Services or Environmental and Public Works committee.

"There are people who clearly want to take some action and force some level of discipline," said a prominent adviser to Democratic leadership. "It is a complicated and delicate walk, but going forward one wants to keep him voting with the Dems as often as possible... My sense is there is a lot of discomfort and anger. On the other hand when passions cool and you see the margin that Obama won by you realize that Lieberman didn't have any impact. Even in the Jewish community, he was completely ineffectual in his advocacy for McCain."

I have a world of confidience in Barak Obama's decisions. That's why we elected him. I believe since Lieberman is going to be in his senate seat for the next four years he's going to be voting in someone's favor. Best to still maybe have his vote in our corner. But...his days are numbered! I'm sure he knows that the DSC is not going to bat for him for re-election and I'm sure they will have a suitable replacement to run against him in the Primary. It's just a shame they had to continue him in the sensative and important pos'n of Chairman of the Homeland Sec Comtte. I would hope(and once again Barak and the rest are no dummies) he's got some other party official breathing over his shoulder and limiting his exposure to other sensitive information. Think---If you and I know he's a double crosser the party officials have lots of experience in dealing with such situations. Let's hope they're not as dumb a some of the apparantly dumb things they do. (Dumb like a fox?)

We tried to get rid of him last time but the Repugs voted for him. They didn't even support their own candidate- better luck next time!

That's Joe...laughing all the way to the bank. Get this little weasel out of the Senate. He represents no one but himself.

principle? rofl
They'll have to do a LOT more than that.
But right now they're (apparently) desperate - nothing more, nothing less.

OK, I don't get it. What was it about my last post you didn't like? Was it calling Lieberman a traitorous piece of garbage?

There wasn't any profanity so I can only sumize that you are practicing some kind of narrow minded censorship? WTF?

Obama needs to give this turncoat the boot! I thought Obama was for change? That isn't going to happen if he does the same old, same old. I hope that he keeps his word and selects his staff from those who are competent, and give some new people a chance.

I am starting to loose faith in the Democratic Party leadership. It is one thing to be honorable in opposing another's candidacy and political view point and just focus on the issues, it is quite the other to participate in the process of spreading lies and misrepresentations. Joe Lieberman went out of his way to participate in the Republican Smear Machine's attack against Obama. Should the Senate Democratic leadership give him a free pass for his outrageous behavior over the last two years, then there will be no need for a them to have a Democratic Whip. No need to enforce party discipline when there are no rules to follow.

Granted we want to enter a new era where rabid slander and backstabbing behavior is left behind. But we will never get to that point if we just "kiss" and "make nice" like this was some Nursery School spat. The bullies always return when they know they will not get in trouble. Besides even Nursery School children get Time outs and have privileges removed for unsocial behavior.

Anyone see Ind. Senator Evan Bayh on Rachael Maddow's Show recently? I thought I was going to puke when he started reciting all the reasons we should fear Joe Lieberman, disgusting.
I bet the character that Jimmy Stewart played in "Mr. Smith goes to Washington" would not be fearful, spineless and mealy mouth about Joe Lieberman, he would have said get rid of the bum and let the Senate votes be what they will be.
The problem is there is a lack of conviction on the hill, that is why we are getting royally screwed on almost a daily basis.

I agree. Bayh really embarrassed himself. I want to know what he got for agreeing to deliver that pathetic message on behalf of the Senate. What do you want to bet Bayh gets a plum committee appointment in a few weeks?

The dems are so weak and make me sick. Lieberman is not to be trusted and should not be leading Homeland security. If he were a republican supporting Obama and bad mouthing the fellow republican nominee he would have definitly been thrown out of their caucus. I am extremely disappointed in Chrs Dodd coming out to support him and I hope other dems start to run against the polticians, both repub and dems, who stand up for their own in the senate, but refuse to stand up for Main Street.

I think to keep Lieberman in the democrat caucus is wrong and ill advised. He is more republican than dem so let him go where his heart dictates. To keep him in the dem caucus to let him spy for the republicans....just seems wrong...there are actions and reactions...he knew there would be consequences...implement them and be done with it...all this monkeying around we do not need it.

Actually he knew very well that there would be NO consequences from the spineless democrats, which is why he felt quite safe playing both sides of the aisle.

Sheesh. How many times does LIEberman have to stab the Dems in the back before they realize he is a liability and not an asset.

I don't buy the 'be nice to him so he votes our way' argument. His past behavior has shown he is unlikely to fulfill this expectation and no one is talking about the few sensible and centrist Republicans who will vote for the Dems agenda because it is what is best for the country. There has to be a few of those in the Senate. In fact, any Republican looking to be re elected in 2010 would fit into this category.

The Dems would be better off sweet talking those potential party line crossers rather than waste anything more on LIEberman.
