As Senate Democrats prepare for a vote on Sen. Joseph Lieberman's fate in the party, the political tea leaves indicate that he will likely keep his post as chair of the Homeland Security and Government Reform Committee.

Over the past few days, a growing number of colleagues have gravitated to Lieberman's corner. The most prominent of them is President-elect Barack Obama. The Illinois Senator issued indications this past week that he would like Lieberman to remain in the caucus, but he didn't tip his hand one way or another when it came to the chairmanship.

Since then, Obama has reportedly had conversations with multiple Senate allies including Dick Durbin, Ted Kennedy, Clair McCaskill, and Chris Dodd. One person he hasn't talked to is Lieberman himself.

"They have not spoken," said spokesperson Stephanie Cutter.

Nevertheless, Lieberman does seem to be developing the support he needs to stave off any attempt to strip him of his homeland security post. In addition to Obama, it was reported on Thursday that Dodd and Sens. Tom Carper, Bill Nelson and Ken Salazar had formed a group that was pushing for an alternative way to punish Lieberman while keeping him in the caucus. Sen. Evan Bayh, meanwhile, took to the "Rachel Maddow Show" to explain why taking away Lieberman's homeland security position -- even if the Connecticut independent didn't follow through on his threat to flee the caucus -- would be a bad thing.

"[He] might decide to stay and be bitter," said the Indiana Democrat. "What would happen is from time to time we have close votes... If Lieberman doesn't know what to do and we've exacted revenge on him, I think we could expect the same in return."

Indeed, the lingering question surrounding Lieberman's fate is not so much if he will remain as committee chair, but who - if anyone - will vote for him to be stripped of this title. Obama, actually, will not have a vote on the matter. A Senate aide explains that the issue will be decided by "New Congress, new caucus, new members," meaning that the incoming class will have a voice in deciding Lieberman's fate but not the president or vice president elect.

Contacted by the Huffington Post, nearly every office of newly elected incoming Democrats said they either had not looked thoroughly enough at the matter, were deferring for the moment to Democratic leadership, or simply couldn't comment. Jeff Merkley of Oregon has expressed disappointment with Lieberman's campaign conduct, describing it as a "knife through my heart." But his office, too, said he wasn't taking a position on his soon-to-be colleague.

With so many balls still up in the air, several aides said they did not expect a nail-biting vote next week vis-à-vis Lieberman's future. A position on what to do with his committee chairmanship will be forged, one source predicted, and the caucus would likely support it with minor dissension. One possibility, it seems, is a compromise punishment: to allow Lieberman to stay as chair of the Homeland Security and Government Reform Committee but take away a spot on either the Armed Services or Environmental and Public Works committee.

"There are people who clearly want to take some action and force some level of discipline," said a prominent adviser to Democratic leadership. "It is a complicated and delicate walk, but going forward one wants to keep him voting with the Dems as often as possible... My sense is there is a lot of discomfort and anger. On the other hand when passions cool and you see the margin that Obama won by you realize that Lieberman didn't have any impact. Even in the Jewish community, he was completely ineffectual in his advocacy for McCain."

He should be made to render a public apology to the Democratic party and to our commander-in-chief elect Mr. Obama. Also, he had better vote with the Dems because that would be the main reason why he is useful!!!

Sometimes being vindictive works against your best interest. The Dems didn't get the 60 majority they needed. Domestically, Joe is basically a liberal. Democrats have a history of shooting themselves in the foot over their "principles." Don't do it again!

No, the problem has been that Dems have not stood on principle. That's why everything that's happened in the last 8 years has happened.

If any of them had bothered to read a friggin intelligence report and ask questions, the Iraq war may not have occurred and the military could have focused on the real target.

I'm trying to be patient with the President-Elect and the congressional Dems, but they are really starting to p*ss me off with their weakness.

Okay, being bold may mean that everything will get placed on them if something goes wrong, but they ran for office; it was not forced on them, and they need to start leading or get the "you-know-what" out of the way.

What was that line from the film "The American President" uttered by Michael J. Fox's character: People in the desert will drink the sand if you don't give them water... or something like that. The Reps (the sand) gain power because the Dems don't give the people any water.

Well, I know plenty of good men and women, but they know when someone has (or is trying to) scr*wed them and they don't let it stand.

I get it though, the Dems are moving slowly and cautiously because they don't want to mess this up and they don't want to seem to eager, but they better realize that they can't please everybody all of the time.

They just have to do what they think is right an let the chips fall where they may... and don't tell me that they majority of Dems don't think that the right thing to do is oust Lieberman.

If Senator Reid would like to keep Lieberman in a position of power, I have a suggestion. Why not put him in the Senate Majority Leader's post. That position has been vacant for several years.

I wanted to see Joe booted.
But when you think about it Obama's tone of turning the other cheek might be a smarter move.
It's easy to get emotional and sometimes not so simple to be pragmatic

I understand Obama's tone and wish. However, this man suggested that Obama was a terrorist. He questioned his loyalty to the country. This is not the kind of person you want on your team. I think the Democrats should take this out of Obama's hands and boot this guy as far as he will sail. Let him caucus with the Republicans. He does anyway. He is forever scanning for opportunity. You watch, in 2012 it will be Palin/Lieberman. They make a good pair.

I think Obama is following the path Lincoln wanted to take,

"With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation΄s wounds."

You can already see Obama using the information he is getting in briefings in a pragmatic push for reform, not to punish the out going administration or demand retribution. Lieberman is much less likely to drag the senate into protracted investigations that will distract from the real programs we need to turn this country around. Remember reconstruction? What good came from that?

I would suggest keeping him out of the armed services committee, before he helps drag us into another preemptive war.

Why would, why should, Democrats entertain this idea without Lieberman making a conciliatory gesture towards them?

How about Lieberman doing some penance? How about Lieberman going down to Georgia and campaigning for Democrat Jim Martin in that run-off election? Let him campaign against McCain, who is going down to Georgia to campaign for Chambliss.

Why would any Democrat go to bat for Lieberman without his showing one ounce of contrition?
