I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Radioactive

"Are you paying attention to what's being said on your radio?" asks Media Matters. And the answer, for me anyway, is: "No! I thought that's what all the iPods and Hulus and porn-on-demand were for, to keep me away from radio!" Also: "What's a radio?" Well, as it turns out, for many Americans the radio is a constant, deafening clatter of unhinged right-wing nuthatchery. Now that the election is over, Media Matters has taken stock of it all and, not surprisingly, deemed it disturbing.

One important point worth noting is that while one thinks of these sorts of shows as providers of political content, these talk-radio jocks are not just out on the air, offering praise for the candidates and policies they support and criticism of candidates and policies they dislike. In fact, all too often, the target of their ire isn't politicians or career policymakers at all, but average American citizens:

As Media Matters for America documented, the nationwide network of conservative radio hosts -- personalities without the national prominence of Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh -- engaged in an all-out effort to foment hate and suspicion of Barack Obama by participating actively in an echo chamber of smears and falsehoods about the primary candidate and then Democratic nominee. But these same radio hosts were by no means discerning in their vitriol and did not save their ire solely for Obama. The smears ran the gamut, both in the context of the 2008 election, as Media Matters noted in the previous report, and beyond. Immigrants, female politicians (and women in general), the LGBT community, the poor and homeless, minorities, progressives, unions, college students, and even autistic children were targets of these radio personalities' invective.

To summarize the points of view of the wide array of radio personalities surveyed by Media Matters, here is some shorthand: They hate people like you and me because we are immigrants with subprime mortgages that rape statuary and have never learned to use a toothbrush or toilet paper and carry terrorist machetes because we're "little bitches" that won't stand up to Sarah Palin's panty lines and are homeless, in desperate need of sterilization because we are ugly, lack "American names," and who have "puckered butts" and screech like monkeys to summon our army of Bulgarian women to sacrifice Trig Palin to Artemis while burning synagogues and marrying animals and spreading AIDS through border-crossing tortillas, just as you'd expect from a bunch Hitler-loving leather fetishists that are suspiciously good at using floor buffers.

That is basically, literally, what they say everyday, in their radio bunkers. And they have a point! The big question is: WHAT IS IT THAT DRIVES SO MANY OF US TO RAPE STATUES?

ANSWER: That $3M overhead projector at the Adler Planetarium that Obama wanted funded, for William Ayers to mindfreak us.

The right will howl and fight if those in power, the Dems, ( Man, I love saying that!!!!!) impose the Fairness Doctrine. They will scream and yell and filibuster and threaten.

So OK, we debate it.... WE negotiate, come to terms. wHATEVER...

What we should ABSOLUTELY NOT NEGOTIATE is getting hate AM radio OFF the ARMED FORCES Network. This compromises our leadership, our morale, and corrupts our military with a hateful, vitriolic sense of ethno-cenricism that is unAmerican and dangerous for our own united efforts for the more perfect union we strive to carru across the world.

Get Rush and his Minions OFF the ARMED FORCES NETWORK!!!

I'm with you - pipe in hate speech to people with guns. Wouldn't want them to loose their focus...

Hannity was rambling on about this on his show yesterday. I cannot stand right-wing radio but I've put in on when I'm in the car so I can see what they're saying. During the election, I could only stand about 5 min. because of the level of hate (and I do mean HATE) being spewed by the likes of Limbaugh and Hannity.

However, I was somewhat shocked by the level of hateful smear rhetoric coming from some of the not-so-heavily-listened-to talk radio like Neal Boortz who also made major contributions to the smears and fear mongering. Boortz was someone I could listen to because he was what I considered middle-of-the-road but his show took a nasty tone that has driven me away for good from him. And Boortz is a libertarian!

He really isn't a libertarian. He is a Boortzarian. All about him, all the time. He shills for anybody if they pay him enough and give him enough free stuff. He hates dems., ACLU, poor people, moderates or anyone who does swallow what he spews out. He is a punk.

Hate Radio has been with us a long time. Religions use this medium to spread their version of "tough love" that demonizes all kinds of people. This is a very serious issue, as it is the grist for the degenerate core of the sick portion of our society. We saw them come out for Palin's hate rallies. We saw them threatening early voters in many southern states. We hear their children singing assassination songs on Idaho school buses. They are hoarding assault rifles in the NASCAR states. This society has a very serious problem. It is unfortunate that nothing is being done to address this. I do not even have to warn you that there will be some very terrible incidents soon. We only have ourselves to blame for not addressing this during the campaign, the most disgusting electoral season of my lifetime. To think that out of all this we have the best president-elect of my lifetime is unbelievable. We have no idea how fortunate we are to have Obama to lead us. Thank you, Barack Obama, for standing up against all that is bad and evil in our society.

Well said. Freedom of speech should not be defined as hate. vitriol and class warfare. It makes me sick to my stomach when I hear this stuff.

I'm sure that the next administration will replace the current FCC chairman that has overlooked the antics of right wing radio whackos such as Limbaugh et al. The FCC made a point to go after Howard Stern, and Donald Imus I do not persoanally agree with their views(Both shock jocks in there time ) and fine their company's for their comments, but hey were not political. Clear Channel's employee Limbaugh is impervious to the hate mongering rheteroric, fear and a touch of racsim. I hope these people the corporation as well as the sponsors that preach this ideolgy are flushed from our airwaves.

If only more Americans would listen to it, though. I hardly dare search out other radio stations - I don't want to hear any of the negativity this piece speaks of, although I do agree it is important to know what other Americans are listening to. I am very disturbed by the trend now for right-wing radio and tv (especially faux news) to try to instill fear of being governed by Obama, fear of what he will do to this country. The right wing media knows what it is doing - they are not afraid at all, in truth. But their willingness to spread civil unrest and fear, and provide fodder to the true whackos hiding in our culture is what truly frightens me. I fully believe in freedom of speech but sometimes I think they walk a fine line between just stating their opinions and speaking treasonous, dangerous lies. Their utter lack of reason and ethics is what is truly frightening.

GrainneKathleen;

As I posted here the other day, singling out Rush Limbaugh,
he's very calculated in his on-air diatribes, "He never yells "fire"
in a crowded theatre, as he knows that is a legal offense and
could bring charges against him for inciting to riot.

He just stands up, sniffs the air and questions aloud in
his bellowing manner...:Is that SMOKE that I smell? Do
you smell what I smell, could that be SMOKE? I think
that's SMOKE.

This allows his message to penetrate the minds of his
followers, the "ditto-heads," as he likes to call them.

Sadly, they relish that appelation, in their small minds thinking
it is a proud and righteous title. Small, sad minds, indeed.

If I were Limbaugh, Hannity and O'Reilly, I'd be loking in my rearview mirror very closely after January 20th. Watching your phone calls and e-mail accounts. Big brother is watching courtesey of the man you have praised. I'ts a new game now.

How to battle ignorance and need? Ignorance and Need are the little children under the coat of Christmas Present, remember? How about Public works programs to stoke the economy so the AM radio listeners have a way to get their news besides AM radio?

Universal health care
Broadband as a public utility so as to include the manipulated poor in our expanded access to public knowlege.
Alternative energy programs and a new electic grid to deliver that energy where it is needed. Let's start work programs in the rural south and inner cities.

I listen to this stuff on the way home from work sometimes. It's scary, really scary, and people actually believe it. Every caller has the exact same point of view right down to the buzzwords or phrases like, cut and run, or smoking gun/mushroom cloud, or maverick, or joe the plumber, etc. I mean these people are out there. If you didn't know it was 2008, you would think it was Nuremberg in 1933.

Deregulation has ruined talk radio, IMO. As soon as they deregulated, the industry combined from thousands of owners into just a few and most of them are right wing. It is difficult for me to listen to conservative talk radio, in fact they turned me against the Republican party.
