I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Radioactive

"Are you paying attention to what's being said on your radio?" asks Media Matters. And the answer, for me anyway, is: "No! I thought that's what all the iPods and Hulus and porn-on-demand were for, to keep me away from radio!" Also: "What's a radio?" Well, as it turns out, for many Americans the radio is a constant, deafening clatter of unhinged right-wing nuthatchery. Now that the election is over, Media Matters has taken stock of it all and, not surprisingly, deemed it disturbing.

One important point worth noting is that while one thinks of these sorts of shows as providers of political content, these talk-radio jocks are not just out on the air, offering praise for the candidates and policies they support and criticism of candidates and policies they dislike. In fact, all too often, the target of their ire isn't politicians or career policymakers at all, but average American citizens:

As Media Matters for America documented, the nationwide network of conservative radio hosts -- personalities without the national prominence of Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh -- engaged in an all-out effort to foment hate and suspicion of Barack Obama by participating actively in an echo chamber of smears and falsehoods about the primary candidate and then Democratic nominee. But these same radio hosts were by no means discerning in their vitriol and did not save their ire solely for Obama. The smears ran the gamut, both in the context of the 2008 election, as Media Matters noted in the previous report, and beyond. Immigrants, female politicians (and women in general), the LGBT community, the poor and homeless, minorities, progressives, unions, college students, and even autistic children were targets of these radio personalities' invective.

To summarize the points of view of the wide array of radio personalities surveyed by Media Matters, here is some shorthand: They hate people like you and me because we are immigrants with subprime mortgages that rape statuary and have never learned to use a toothbrush or toilet paper and carry terrorist machetes because we're "little bitches" that won't stand up to Sarah Palin's panty lines and are homeless, in desperate need of sterilization because we are ugly, lack "American names," and who have "puckered butts" and screech like monkeys to summon our army of Bulgarian women to sacrifice Trig Palin to Artemis while burning synagogues and marrying animals and spreading AIDS through border-crossing tortillas, just as you'd expect from a bunch Hitler-loving leather fetishists that are suspiciously good at using floor buffers.

That is basically, literally, what they say everyday, in their radio bunkers. And they have a point! The big question is: WHAT IS IT THAT DRIVES SO MANY OF US TO RAPE STATUES?

ANSWER: That $3M overhead projector at the Adler Planetarium that Obama wanted funded, for William Ayers to mindfreak us.

Deregulation has killed talk radio, IMO. As soon as they deregulated, the industry combined from thousands of owners into just a few and most of them are right wing. It is difficult for me to listen to conservative talk radio, in fact they turned me against the Republican party.

Who listens to this crap? Men who listen to the radio in their car. Or...men who work outside and listen to the AM radio turned up while they roof my neighbor's house. (!) Hate radio is aimed at working men and retired elderly of both sexes. Both those groups are poor. Perhaps the cheapest way for the left to get to them is to make them rich enough to have news options.

Would you not agree that calling someone the antichrist or hitler is hate speech? Well, that is the liberal media, not the conservative.

The things that have been said about Bush have been worse than anything that has been said about anyone else in public office. That to me is hate speech. You may disagree with him, but to throw out those hateful names and slurs about him....what is that?

"Hateful names and slurs..."

Well then, Bush and Cheney should welcome a chance to clear their names in The World Court where, in a more just world than this, they would be tried for war crimes.

Rush has repeatedly cross the line of h ate speech and defamation. He needs a couple of really expensive lawsuits to shut his mouth. Evereyone feared suing the Enquirer until Carol Bunette threw down the gaunlet. As far as I am concerend, Justice can spend whatever it wants monitoring the programs for H ate speech and prosecuting them.

The big question is why haven't there been lawsuits brought against these bigots? And why prosecutors gone after them for hate speech? Is it a 1st Amendment issue? I am truly perplexed as to why these idiots are employed at all much less by radio stations. Has music gotton so bad that this is better listening? I don't get it.

The fairness doctrine would put an end to these chumps A.S.A.P. More of that deregulation that has us in the predicament we're in today.

I have preoccupied my mind on many different things, like sports for example; many but the radio, is disgusting, garbage, and the media wouldn't do a thing to stop it as long as they have their cake eat too!!! It's a "bridge to nowhere"!!! WINK, WINK...!!!

Liberals have not been very aggressive in purchasing radio stations. They should make this a priority, because many people cannot afford cable TV or satellite radio.

The Fairness Doctrine for broadcast radio and television was a good idea, and progressives should support a return to this sensible regulation so that the public airwaves are not polluted by one-sided partisan ranting.

Democrats should also ban pharmaceutical advertising on broadcast TV and require the broadcast networks to run more educational and public service programming and restore the family hour.

I think the fairness Doctrine is a great idea to limit free speech of people we disagree with. How absurd... After all why should we as liberals desire something such as this even when we disagree with people. Why stop at talk radio. Perhaps we can extend this to print/online media so that for every editorial writer at the NYT, Washington Post, Slate, Huffington Post who rights a column with a liberal slant, there ought to be one with a conservative slant....
If conservative ideas are so lacking in depth, one should not worry about them being heard in any medium....

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:17 AM on 11/14/2008

The Fairness Doctrine did not exclude conservative opinions. It simply said that the broadcaster, as a price of using airwaves owned and assigned by the PUBLIC, had to provide equal time for opposing points of view. The broadcast spectrum is a scarce public resource, and it is reasonable to have regulations to ensure that it is used in a way that benefits the public generally.

During the time when the fairness doctrine was legal, reporters, columnist, etc., had to have the facts and had to be able to prove that what they were saying was true or run the risk of being exposed for the phonies they were. A I said before, the fairness doctrine would cause Limbaugh and Hannity to fade into obscurity.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:27 AM on 11/14/2008

I agree with MuchMadness' thoughful and knowledgeable comments. For those who, like dzt, are unaware, the Fairness Doctrine applied only to broadcast -- not cable, not salellite, not newspapers, not the Internet -- only to the publicly owned airwaves. It is not in any way an infringement of First Amendment rights to require that if a licensee such as Clear Channel, CBS, etc. -- who, by the way, are only custodians of public property and are contractually committed to operating in the public interest -- airs programming supporting a particular point of view, then time must be provided BY THE SAME LICENSEE ON THE SAME PROPERTY for contrary opinions. The Reagan administration, caving in to the demands of the incredibly powerful National Association of Broadcasters, dropped the Fairness Doctrine. Rush Limbaugh, the Sultan of Slime, and his ilk are the result.

I just wish someone would explain to me how airing what the hatemongers are spewing out is in any way, shape or form "operating in the public interest". Sure, reinstating the Fairness Doctrine may calm them down somewhat. But yank a few licenses, and the whole thing will stop. It's time to clean up the public's airwaves. Send the slimers back to the sewer where they belong.

I think these hysterical right wing bloviators will crank up the paranoia a bit too far, very soon. They are practically in a state of apoplectic convulsions since the republicans were humiliated in this election. I think some of their pathetic followers are going to snap and try to hurts someone(s). I pray they dont succeed but how can it be avoided the way they are throwing kerosene on the hate bonfire. If that happens they are going to bring the roof and all four walls down on their bald ,red, throbbing, glistening heads.

It seems like the only real way to slow them down is with Lawsuits. Lots and lots of lawsuits, for slander and defamation of character by their victims. The media needs to be held to a standard of truth in what they report. Couldnt it be proven that all this crap they have said is a bunch of lies?

Lying about Obama when he becomes president--calling him a socialist and god only knows what else, making untrue allegations and inciting their listeners absolutely must be treason or sedition. Can't we do something about them then?

Treason? Sedition? Are you kidding?
Obama has been surrounded by Socialists since birth. His father was one, his mentor in HI (Frank M. Davis) was a communist. Why is it so far fetched to believe he would go that route? These are not untrue allegations - they are documented, hard cold facts. He was a member of the New Party in Chicago for several years, a radical left organization that sought to fuse far left groups and push the US into socialism by forcing the Dem party to the far left. It only lasted for 6 years when it failed to withstand a Supreme Court ruling.

When you control the airwaves, you control the people. How does radio capture audiences? That one hour commute each day, listening to radio in the office as a distraction to the monotony of the workday - these are the people already susceptible to the siren's call on the radio. The right wing talk shows hone in on the prime listening hours of people who already have fears and they feed those fears. If the FCC wanted to take action, the best would be to restrict the commute hours and lunch hours to entertainment only. The talk shows would then lose most of their audience. If they can restrict what can be on broadcast TV to certain hours, they can do it to radio too.

I used to listen to a conservative talk radio station on my commute to and from work before I retired. By the time I'd get to work, I'd be fuming ... and by the time I got home, I'd be incensed. My colleagues and I would have round table discussions during our break to talk about what I heard on the radio that day. One program I listened to was a conservative "Christian" show, and they were as vile and hateful as their counterparts! I know I could have just changed the station, but in a perverted, sadistic way, I found the shows entertaining, and very enlightening about how the other side feels, even though it made me angry. It was like I was possessed!! But when I was finally able to get Air America, I was overjoyed. Suddenly, everything began to make sense again! Now that I'm retired, I still switch on Sean and Rush every now and then, just to see what the new talking points are for the day! But now I have Air America and my music CDs to bring me back to reality. I've been exorcised!!

The people who buy into the garbage they spew are very, very sick, but I suppose they're kindred spirits. Very, very bad spirits!!!

I stumbled onto a christian conservation radio talk show one day and you are so right, I couldn't turn away either. I was in utter amazement at what I was listening to - unbelievable stuff - it was like watching a trainwreck. I thought it was funny at first, then realized how serious these demented people were and couldn't get it off my radio fast enough - and never returned. As much as I support free speech, I still think something ought to be done about them. Can certainly understand how these dumber-than-life believers can get so incited with the ugliest of lies.
