I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Radioactive

"Are you paying attention to what's being said on your radio?" asks Media Matters. And the answer, for me anyway, is: "No! I thought that's what all the iPods and Hulus and porn-on-demand were for, to keep me away from radio!" Also: "What's a radio?" Well, as it turns out, for many Americans the radio is a constant, deafening clatter of unhinged right-wing nuthatchery. Now that the election is over, Media Matters has taken stock of it all and, not surprisingly, deemed it disturbing.

One important point worth noting is that while one thinks of these sorts of shows as providers of political content, these talk-radio jocks are not just out on the air, offering praise for the candidates and policies they support and criticism of candidates and policies they dislike. In fact, all too often, the target of their ire isn't politicians or career policymakers at all, but average American citizens:

As Media Matters for America documented, the nationwide network of conservative radio hosts -- personalities without the national prominence of Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh -- engaged in an all-out effort to foment hate and suspicion of Barack Obama by participating actively in an echo chamber of smears and falsehoods about the primary candidate and then Democratic nominee. But these same radio hosts were by no means discerning in their vitriol and did not save their ire solely for Obama. The smears ran the gamut, both in the context of the 2008 election, as Media Matters noted in the previous report, and beyond. Immigrants, female politicians (and women in general), the LGBT community, the poor and homeless, minorities, progressives, unions, college students, and even autistic children were targets of these radio personalities' invective.

To summarize the points of view of the wide array of radio personalities surveyed by Media Matters, here is some shorthand: They hate people like you and me because we are immigrants with subprime mortgages that rape statuary and have never learned to use a toothbrush or toilet paper and carry terrorist machetes because we're "little bitches" that won't stand up to Sarah Palin's panty lines and are homeless, in desperate need of sterilization because we are ugly, lack "American names," and who have "puckered butts" and screech like monkeys to summon our army of Bulgarian women to sacrifice Trig Palin to Artemis while burning synagogues and marrying animals and spreading AIDS through border-crossing tortillas, just as you'd expect from a bunch Hitler-loving leather fetishists that are suspiciously good at using floor buffers.

That is basically, literally, what they say everyday, in their radio bunkers. And they have a point! The big question is: WHAT IS IT THAT DRIVES SO MANY OF US TO RAPE STATUES?

ANSWER: That $3M overhead projector at the Adler Planetarium that Obama wanted funded, for William Ayers to mindfreak us.

The Fairness Doctrine was the government's attempt at controlling political speech. Didn't work then. Won't work now.

I get a sick thrill out of watching these people as they twist their listeners like puppets. These ignorant people they they preach to just eat the b.s. up like it was bacon and eggs.

that's why those people will never realize their dreams, they'll just never know the difference between fact and fiction. This just like the b.s. better than their own realities.

Hillbilly heaven, where Limbaugh is their God.

He was a Yale cheerleader in his undergrad fraternity days. Harvard was where he matriculated to gain his MBA. This plus his business experience plus his executive experience as Governor of Texas is what has made his presidency so successful.

Whenever someone reminds me that there is poison like this on the airwaves, I begin to think maybe the people of Singapore and China have the right idea. Anybody should have the right to spout this crap, but the only people who should listen should be their doctors. Why doesn't anyone talk about the potentially damaging effects of this junk? I bet it can be proven more dangerous to mental health than computer games or action movies -

That statue was asking for it, with that bared breast. Where's John Ashcroft when you need him to protect statue modesty?

What radio programming are they listening to, Micheal Savage?

I believe the other night on Larry King Live Sarah Palin said she would love to offer her assistance in helping the media being more credible, objective, non-biased, and get back to the who, why, what and where reporting instead. She also stated a few other things about the electorate should be able to believe everthing that is reported on the airwaves. Does that mean Limbaugh and Hannity will soon be at the unemployment office filing for benefits??

A little sidenote, watch her on youtube on Larry when he asks her about the right wing media. She looks like a moose caught in the headlights.

I've heard (unsubstantiated) rumors that the FCC is "considering" the possibility of re-allocating the AM broadcast band frequencies for other uses. As a ham radio operator, this has caused me to prick up my ears for other reasons, but, if true, could create a special little Hell for talk radio hosts and listeners. One of the big plusses AM radio has is that even small stations can be heard over wide areas at night. FM is pretty much line of sight, which severely limits coverage unless stations are linked by satellite. Clear Channel could do it, but would it be in their economic best interests?

This could get interesting . . .

This is precisely why I choose to only listen to music on the radio. I won't even listen to talk radio in the morning. I get my news and information from where I choose to get it...and the radio just doesn't happen to be one of those sources.

LOL! Last part of commentary was funny. We have nobody to blame but ourselves if we listen to such batsh*t crazy invective. My husband listens occasionally to Limbaugh because he thinks it's funny and you should know your enemies blah blah blah. I say "Why do you even give them the time of day?" You can't complain about them if you are a listener.

These people want all of us to hate whomever and whatever they tell us to. It's frightening to think that there could be another Limbaugh out there. Maybe Gov. Palin could find an outlet through radio for her opinions, hate and war mongering. Another Ann Coulter...just what we all need.
