Radioactive

"Are you paying attention to what's being said on your radio?" asks Media Matters. And the answer, for me anyway, is: "No! I thought that's what all the iPods and Hulus and porn-on-demand were for, to keep me away from radio!" Also: "What's a radio?" Well, as it turns out, for many Americans the radio is a constant, deafening clatter of unhinged right-wing nuthatchery. Now that the election is over, Media Matters has taken stock of it all and, not surprisingly, deemed it disturbing.

One important point worth noting is that while one thinks of these sorts of shows as providers of political content, these talk-radio jocks are not just out on the air, offering praise for the candidates and policies they support and criticism of candidates and policies they dislike. In fact, all too often, the target of their ire isn't politicians or career policymakers at all, but average American citizens:

As Media Matters for America documented, the nationwide network of conservative radio hosts -- personalities without the national prominence of Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh -- engaged in an all-out effort to foment hate and suspicion of Barack Obama by participating actively in an echo chamber of smears and falsehoods about the primary candidate and then Democratic nominee. But these same radio hosts were by no means discerning in their vitriol and did not save their ire solely for Obama. The smears ran the gamut, both in the context of the 2008 election, as Media Matters noted in the previous report, and beyond. Immigrants, female politicians (and women in general), the LGBT community, the poor and homeless, minorities, progressives, unions, college students, and even autistic children were targets of these radio personalities' invective.

To summarize the points of view of the wide array of radio personalities surveyed by Media Matters, here is some shorthand: They hate people like you and me because we are immigrants with subprime mortgages that rape statuary and have never learned to use a toothbrush or toilet paper and carry terrorist machetes because we're "little bitches" that won't stand up to Sarah Palin's panty lines and are homeless, in desperate need of sterilization because we are ugly, lack "American names," and who have "puckered butts" and screech like monkeys to summon our army of Bulgarian women to sacrifice Trig Palin to Artemis while burning synagogues and marrying animals and spreading AIDS through border-crossing tortillas, just as you'd expect from a bunch Hitler-loving leather fetishists that are suspiciously good at using floor buffers.

That is basically, literally, what they say everyday, in their radio bunkers. And they have a point! The big question is: WHAT IS IT THAT DRIVES SO MANY OF US TO RAPE STATUES?

ANSWER: That $3M overhead projector at the Adler Planetarium that Obama wanted funded, for William Ayers to mindfreak us.

"the radio is a constant, deafening clatter of unhinged right-wing nuthatchery"

Sort of like the unhinged, inaccurate left-wing nuthatchery eminating from the HuffintonPost keyboards on a daily basis.

Yeah, only without the racism, sexism, or complete and utter loss of touch with reality.

According to many of you, this sentence is biased, bigoted and sexist.

these right wing "talk show" hosts are still spouting old and tired ideology, yes, it worries me to some degree, but there is a subconscious feeling to the way things used to be and the way things are becoming that will slowly push these right-wing radio nutjobs into a corner and let them spout their hate and divisiveness to their own shadows.

radio is the old medium and tries to keep resurrecting itself digitally, technologically, and personally into peoples' lives -- with the medium reinventing itself, the content should as well -- i think that's where the right will fail

let's cross our fingers

I'm worried about this. They are out of their mind with rage since Obama won the election. Some of these wingnuts are going to boil over into violence.I'm black,I don't have to wear a yellow arm band. It's easy for peope to hurt or kill you if they don't even regard you as human.

Your post makes me really sad, I wish you didn't have to worry about this kind of hate. I think you are right tho, it's only a matter of time before some nutcase decides to go off... I wonder, when does "free speech" become a hate crime.....are these idiots allowed to spew this nonsense as long as they don't come right out and say hurt someone? What does it take to shut them up?

It makes you wonder if a national campaign of crank callers is in order. Nothing offensive, just try to sound like you're one of their biggest fans, then go on and on trying to one-up their wing-nutterery until it goes off a cliff.

It won't work, 'cause as soon as they realize what you're up to, they'll shout you down just like Billo. It's their only defense. Kinda like a toy poodle.

I CERTAINLY HOPE THAT THEY WILL CONTINUE BECAUSE THEIR ANTI IMMIGRANTS BEHAVIOR WILL ONLY STRENGHTEN MINORITIES VIEW OF NOT VOTING FOR THEM.
IGNORE MORONS LIKE THESE BAFFOONS BY NOT SHOPPING ANY OF THEIR ADVERTISERS AND NOT LISTENING TO THEIR STATION.

"What's a radio?" That pretty much sums up how these lunatics can stay on the air. Radio airtime is cheap, especially on the AM side of the dial. Some pyramid marketing scam can pay for an entire show.
The people listen are looking for their message and are usually themselves a bit unstable.

Ah, crazy people are hilarious.

Also, I loved the Adler Planetarium growing up. Those were always my favorite field trips, and was probably part of the impetus for my love of science that led to becoming an engineer. Spending on science education is vital for the future of this country, just look at the numerous high-school programs and competitions sponsored by the DOE. Practically every nerdy thing I did in high school ended up giving me a t-shirt that said DOE on it somewhere.

But didn't you realize that the lovely old planetarium was powered by burning big stacks of bibles?

I don't think your adversaries are much interested in the future. You need to work the future out, rather than have it descend from the clouds.

I worked in radio ( little r) at the beginning of talk radio. My take? Put a mic in front of ANYONE and they become an expert on EVERYTHING. Case in point, the ditz I produced ( ran the board, you know, the "knob dealies") for, who asked a prominent Physician guest "If vasectomies are so great, why don't more women get them?" Sitting there with my vaz stitches still in, I almost coughed up a ...... well , you get the idea.

It would be an interesting study in social psychology to examine what common threads run through such extremists as Limbaugh, Hannity, Savage, Boortz, etc. My money says that Hannity and Limbaugh we abused by Catholic priests. How can we explain the rest?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:08 PM on 11/13/2008

It's all powered by the 10% that the gullible real americans chuck into their churches (augmented by the tax break we all chuck in after it). I say they weren't abused hard enough.

I truly believe this is a form of brainwashing. Half the people who listen to Rush don't even realize how CRAZED and VIOLENT they are after a "session"
I have seen it firsthand and it is a frightening thing.

It is brainwashing and that's why I think it's extremely important for that radio fair doctrine to pass. Are you listening democrats?!

And who among us is really surprised by this?

Those of the right wing of American beliefs have made their stance very clear: Either you are one of them, or you are against them.

It's this "my way or the highway" malarkey that has sent this country into a downward spiral for the last 8 years. Today's republicans are not very far from being the religious extremists that they so wanted to wage war with and dragged the United States kicking and screaming with them because people were stupid/gullible enough to give them political office.

The election of 2008 is their just reward. Now the responsible citizens have to dig their beloved country out of the hole that the bible-thumping conservatives threw us headlong into.

When on this topic, I'm often reminded of a portion of the lyrics from a song by the band Live:
"The crucifix ain't no baseball bat, tell me what kind of God is that, ain't nothing more godless than a war, so what are we fight for?"

You can always listen to The Young Turks hosted by Cenk Uygur (blogger on this site) on XM radio or looped 24/7 on their website:

They actually interviewed this guy from Media Matters 2 days ago on this exact report.

Its a shame, Baltimore is one market that Air America never touched (even though they got our beach zone).

I just hope liberals pick up radio more, its a great format, althought I would have to say that Rachel and Cenk are way ahead in the pack.

You can also listen to WWRL 1600. Rachel Maddow is on 6-8 PM EST, and there are a bunch of other really good hosts, like Ron Kuby in the late afternoon and and Errol Lewis in the early AM.
