NEW YORK — MSNBC was the victim of a hoax when it reported that an adviser to John McCain had identified himself as the source of an embarrassing story about former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, the network said Wednesday.

David Shuster, an anchor for the cable news network, said on air Monday that Martin Eisenstadt, a McCain policy adviser, had come forth and identified himself as the source of a Fox News Channel story saying Palin had mistakenly believed Africa was a country instead of a continent.

Eisenstadt identifies himself on a blog as a senior fellow at the Harding Institute for Freedom and Democracy. Yet neither he nor the institute exist; each is part of a hoax dreamed up by a filmmaker named Eitan Gorlin and his partner, Dan Mirvish, the New York Times reported Wednesday.

The Eisenstadt claim had mistakenly been delivered to Shuster by a producer and was used in a political discussion Monday afternoon, MSNBC said.

"The story was not properly vetted and should not have made air," said Jeremy Gaines, network spokesman. "We recognized the error almost immediately and ran a correction on air within minutes."

Gaines told the Times that someone in the network's newsroom had presumed the information solid because it was passed along in an e-mail from a colleague.

The hoax was limited to the identity of the source in the story about Palin _ not the Fox News story itself. While Palin has denied that she mistook Africa for a country, the veracity of that report was not put in question by the revelation that Eisenstadt is a phony.

Eisenstadt's "work" had been quoted and debunked before. The Huffington Post said it had cited Eisenstadt in July on a story regarding the Hilton family and McCain.

Among the other victims were political blogs for the Los Angeles Times and The New Republic, each of which referenced false material from Eisenstadt's blog.

And in July, Jonathan Stein of Mother Jones magazine blogged an item about Eisenstadt speaking on Iraqi television about a casino in Baghdad's "Green Zone."

Stein later realized he'd been had.

"Kudos to the inventor of this whole thing," Stein wrote. "My only consolation is that if I had as much time on my hands as he clearly does, I probably would have figured this out and saved myself a fair amount of embarrassment."

I guess this means that Sarah Palin is actually a genius.

Relax.

He got a source wrong. It was corrected.

The original story is still presumably true.

Oh well as long as it's "presumably" true I guess we can disregard journalistic diligence and integrity. I think "presumption of truth" should be the new standard in the world of the 24 hr news cycle.

If it took only minutes after airing the story, to discover that the source wasn't creditable, then why didn't MSNBC verify the source before airing the story. The Media is in such a hurry to be the first to break a story they really don't care if their sources are creditable or not, therefore the Media has no creditability.

Lack of media credibility is hardly a revelation. This is what makes it so damned difficult for the average voter to stay informed. It's also a reason why no one should hang an opinion on a single statement. Whether or not Palin knew Africa was a continent or mistakenly identified it as a nation is embarrassing for Palin but that's about all. More important questions are whether Palin knows the half dozen or so states in Africa that have direct economic, military, or humanitarian implications for US foreign policy and can she identify their heads of state. Further, does Palin know that the US military recently established an Africa Command; does she know where that command is HQed and who was appointed as its commander. Can Palin discuss the Dafur and Somalia situations coherently. If Palin can't expound coherently on these basic issues, then she's a rank amateur who belongs in Wasila.

What are all these HOAX generators trying to prove?

NY Times July 4, 2009 paper and this show how strange these promoters are becoming!

I am sure they are hurting themselves as much as they are HURTING OTHERS!

Their motivation needs to be determined!

Actually, they serve a very important purpose. The mainstream media has become a joke, and many, many people in this country still rely on them for information. So the hoaxers serve two purposes... 1) they sound a warning that the MSM simply cannot be relied upon, and 2) perhaps they will force the MSM to be better than the sloppy, lazy, useless propaganda stenographers they have become.

Kudos to anyone who exposes the pathetic US press for what they have become. If they weren't so pathetic, they couldn't be so easily duped.

Yes, I do remember what happened to Dan Rather. He used forged documents to source his story about President Bush and rather was fired for it; rightfully so I might add.

All this controversy over whether Gov. Palin knows much about geography caused a trusted news source, MSNBC, to post an unvetted story? It makes me realize how easy it must have been for the informant, "Curveball," to sell his story to the US government and then the US government used the same faulty, unvetted source to promote its Iraq Invasion plan to the Congress and to the American people. When will we ever learn? My mother taught me to "consider the source" of my information before I even entered first grade. Once I got to school, my teachers taught me the same thing and it was enforced with low grades for unvetted and faulty sources in research papers. But, once money comes into play, its ok to toss out the rules on sourcing just to make a profit? When will we ever wise up?

Curveball was saying what was wanted.
There were other voices with dissenting information that were ignored.

However, the "news" people need to get their shinola together.

Smoke and mirrors. This woman is the epitome of the gop. How could it not become locked in a fatal embrace with her. If the best it can do is a continuation of the divisive, deceptive strategy of its past, there may not be much hope in thinking in terms of resurrection. The only thing it truly gets is hate and the controlling faction of the gop would like to control your mind. Once the level of psychological projection is observed by contrast, it seems to me that a platform rooted in anti-social, paranoid, and narcissistic behavior is a loser. Sure, when she thought about it, Ms. Palin probably knew Africa was a continent, but that is not the point.

the jerks in the main stream media who like to feel important should stop using the terms "sources close to," "sources within the ..." "confidential sources," et cetera in news reporting

a lot of unnamed sources were used to help gin up support for the reason to go to war in Iraq and to validate a host of other lies

There is no reason to make up ridiculous stories about the right. All the reasonable people on TV need to do is directly quote what is actually being said on Limbaugh, Hannity, or by Palin and so forth. That way there can be no problem with reporting unsubstaniated rumors and once again Democrats will have taken a higher road, if not the high road.

The fact that the guy claimed to be with The Harding Institute for anything should have been their first clue they were dealing with a prankster.

Gotta love the objectivity and professionalism of modern journalism. The new journalistic policy/creed seems to be "Lets get it to air/print and we'll sort out the facts later".
