NEW YORK — MSNBC was the victim of a hoax when it reported that an adviser to John McCain had identified himself as the source of an embarrassing story about former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, the network said Wednesday.

David Shuster, an anchor for the cable news network, said on air Monday that Martin Eisenstadt, a McCain policy adviser, had come forth and identified himself as the source of a Fox News Channel story saying Palin had mistakenly believed Africa was a country instead of a continent.

Eisenstadt identifies himself on a blog as a senior fellow at the Harding Institute for Freedom and Democracy. Yet neither he nor the institute exist; each is part of a hoax dreamed up by a filmmaker named Eitan Gorlin and his partner, Dan Mirvish, the New York Times reported Wednesday.

The Eisenstadt claim had mistakenly been delivered to Shuster by a producer and was used in a political discussion Monday afternoon, MSNBC said.

"The story was not properly vetted and should not have made air," said Jeremy Gaines, network spokesman. "We recognized the error almost immediately and ran a correction on air within minutes."

Gaines told the Times that someone in the network's newsroom had presumed the information solid because it was passed along in an e-mail from a colleague.

The hoax was limited to the identity of the source in the story about Palin _ not the Fox News story itself. While Palin has denied that she mistook Africa for a country, the veracity of that report was not put in question by the revelation that Eisenstadt is a phony.

Eisenstadt's "work" had been quoted and debunked before. The Huffington Post said it had cited Eisenstadt in July on a story regarding the Hilton family and McCain.

Among the other victims were political blogs for the Los Angeles Times and The New Republic, each of which referenced false material from Eisenstadt's blog.

And in July, Jonathan Stein of Mother Jones magazine blogged an item about Eisenstadt speaking on Iraqi television about a casino in Baghdad's "Green Zone."

Stein later realized he'd been had.

"Kudos to the inventor of this whole thing," Stein wrote. "My only consolation is that if I had as much time on my hands as he clearly does, I probably would have figured this out and saved myself a fair amount of embarrassment."

So, when are they finally going to own up that they let themselves be hoaxed when they reported the links between Iraqi intelligence and M. Atta? The Nigerian centrifuge pipe story? Moveable chemical weapons factories? Mystery ships carrying Saddam's weapons?

I'm confused - wasn't it a stand up on O'Reilly that broke this story?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:34 PM on 11/13/2008

Yes. That is the funniest thing.
Fox reported it (unknown source)
MSNBC validated it (Eisenstadt as source)
They all hopped on the merry go round.

Seems to me I heard this was a hoax before Shuster came out with it. Are we more up on the news that he is?

This is a similar version of the same Republican game played on Dan Rather/CBS
on the George Bush National Guard story. The goal: discredit the news orgs not favorable
to 'the party'
Republican covert ops have come a long way from Watergate. Where do they train their rabid faithful?
Jerry Falwell U ?

Sounds like the HOAX was just a well planed HOAX by MSNBC

Yeah right Palin and her right wing friends had much better reason to perpetrate the hoax than anyone. Now it just comes from an anonymous source that Palin is an ignoramus.

That comment makes absolutely no sense. Do you care to explain?

Whether it is the Africa issue, Gov Palin wrapped in a towel talking to an advisor or Dan Rather's memo, this is a trend that is only going to get worse.

People who have opinions will use truth or fiction to support or further those opinions. To hell with the accuracy. Just read these comments. Don't ever deny that blogs and the internet at large are full of defect when it comes to truth.

Tell that to Fox news. They were the first to report the story. The only error MSNBC admitted was in incorrectly identifying the source of the story.

But the far left on this site are claiming the Fox News story to be true.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:17 PM on 11/13/2008

Rest assured, the ultra right-wing folks at Fox News will jump all over this to try to discredit MSNBC
in much the same way that it was done to Dan Rather.

These right wing nuts are unbelievable!

This is one of the consequences of MSNBC not vetting the story. yes, you're right, Fox will cash in on this.

I don't see people mentioning that the reason this hoax was so effective is that it was totally believable that Palin didn't know that Africa is a continent, not a country. How sad is that?

geneven: that wasn't the HOAX.

....... I am shocked and amazed that so many people JUST CAN'T READ !!!!

This story is really not all that complicated

Wow admitting you were wrong about a story, what a concept. Fox news should pay a bit more attention to this.

If they did that they would spend all day doing that! Well all year I should say.

The fact that Palin is still a strong story in the news and fodder on the Huffington Posts totally validates her. The amount of energy so many of the posters are doing to tear this woment down is an indication that she is far more effective that any of you will admit. If she were truly the "Joke" you make her out to be then you should be sing her praises for her to be the head of the GOP. But you people are totally threatened by her which is why I get a kick out of your negative posts. I am hoping you keep her on the front page....please do. It will be much easier for her to sit back and counter-punch you rather than shaking down TV anchors for attention. Good Job.

Ummm. Did I miss something or did McCain/Palin get stomped in this election? If you are not totally blind you must see just how effective she has been.

Then why is she still such a hot topic on this post and on all major news sites and networks?......J

52%-47% was far closer than it should have been. If America was returning 'rational' thought the score should have been 65 to 35. And I remember when they used to call California the land of 'fruits and nuts' ! Now it appears that label can be given to most red states

Separate church and state. The 'family values' party? Every one running from Reagan on, were the perfect picture of dysfunctional families.

Hi,I'm Jasa from India. I'm going to beg for mercy here. Yesterday, there was a fight in a college in our country. Two students were beaten up by 70 students using weapons like iron rods and knives. The most cruel thing about this incident is that nearly 100 cops were watching this live just 10 feet away from the action. The police were informed before the incident even started. The fight was taped by several media and broadcasted all over the state. This matter must be taken to the Human rights. I don't know the procedure. So, I'm posting this in the top blogs in the world, hoping that there is atleast one person with a heart who will come forward to take this matter to Human rights. I beg the authors of the blog to post an article about this incident,so that the World may know what is going on in India. watch the video in youtube at

http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=IKkkJTyU550(good quality)
http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=d5AsWevkj1A or

I'm confident that the media and law in our country can't do a thing because of the political pressure.I beg everyone reading this to do something regarding this inhumane act. If you can help me by any means, please mail me at invalidid87@gmail.com. After the incident was over, the police cleaned up the mess and arrested just 3 people. This is the worst crime against humanity that I've ever seen.

The apology shows integrity but if Palin had not proven herself to be an ignoramus no one would have fallen for the "hoax".

Onward and upward to REAL issues.

PS to Palin: keep on talkin' and hatin'...the wokrd will see who you are!

peacegurl .... THAT isn't the hoax ! The Palin story hasn't been debunked at all.

THE HOAX is that someone pretended to be the one who leaked it! The aides who leaked it, have not been identified.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:53 PM on 11/13/2008

Oh that's a good point.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:09 PM on 11/13/2008

Look. The point is not about Palin's knowledge. She clearly was out of her league. She was not elected so it is a non-issue.
The point is that these Eisenstadt clowns were "leaking" stuff the whole campaign and the media ran with it. Huffpo, Keith O., Shuster, Fox, all of these people have been using Eisenstadt as a source for months now. They even leaked to MSNBC that they were leaking, and that was a hoax as well.
I laugh because now that Fox has a disparaging story about Palin...the far left on this site rush to prove Fox right. Any other story from Fox and the crowd would be claiming it false.
