NEW YORK — MSNBC was the victim of a hoax when it reported that an adviser to John McCain had identified himself as the source of an embarrassing story about former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, the network said Wednesday.

David Shuster, an anchor for the cable news network, said on air Monday that Martin Eisenstadt, a McCain policy adviser, had come forth and identified himself as the source of a Fox News Channel story saying Palin had mistakenly believed Africa was a country instead of a continent.

Eisenstadt identifies himself on a blog as a senior fellow at the Harding Institute for Freedom and Democracy. Yet neither he nor the institute exist; each is part of a hoax dreamed up by a filmmaker named Eitan Gorlin and his partner, Dan Mirvish, the New York Times reported Wednesday.

The Eisenstadt claim had mistakenly been delivered to Shuster by a producer and was used in a political discussion Monday afternoon, MSNBC said.

"The story was not properly vetted and should not have made air," said Jeremy Gaines, network spokesman. "We recognized the error almost immediately and ran a correction on air within minutes."

Gaines told the Times that someone in the network's newsroom had presumed the information solid because it was passed along in an e-mail from a colleague.

The hoax was limited to the identity of the source in the story about Palin _ not the Fox News story itself. While Palin has denied that she mistook Africa for a country, the veracity of that report was not put in question by the revelation that Eisenstadt is a phony.

Eisenstadt's "work" had been quoted and debunked before. The Huffington Post said it had cited Eisenstadt in July on a story regarding the Hilton family and McCain.

Among the other victims were political blogs for the Los Angeles Times and The New Republic, each of which referenced false material from Eisenstadt's blog.

And in July, Jonathan Stein of Mother Jones magazine blogged an item about Eisenstadt speaking on Iraqi television about a casino in Baghdad's "Green Zone."

Stein later realized he'd been had.

"Kudos to the inventor of this whole thing," Stein wrote. "My only consolation is that if I had as much time on my hands as he clearly does, I probably would have figured this out and saved myself a fair amount of embarrassment."

CNN did right by not airing the B girl story until it has been revealed to be a fraud.

The thing is, the hoax wouldn't have been so successful if it the idea that Palin didn't know that Africa was a continent weren't so believable!

The LEAKS are believable, for the reason you stated.

The HOAX is not about the story, the HOAX is someone pretending they were the leakers, not about the information that was leaked.

Pardon me, but . . .

. . . So?

Why is this alleged "story" worth the play it's getting on HuffPo?

Answer: it isn't. Not even close.

No news in a corporate media giant getting conned? Sounds like a story to me.

Prince Hal .. it's not an 'alledged' story ... it happened.

I am shocked and amazed at the number of people posting on here, who can't READ past 8th grade level.

There was a leak from campaign aides= FACT

Someone came forward, and said HE was the leak=FACT

Turned out he was not the leak =FACT and HOAX

The only 'allegations' are what the aides said, but the stories about it, are FACT

FACT: Every FACT is not a big story.

Not sure whether you noticed, but the leak itself is not affected by this "story."

FACT: That you and I are arguing about it is a FACT, but not much of a STORY.

FACT: The word is spelled "alleged."

Is the Africa story the only Fox story you believe? Or do you believe them all?

Lets March on Washington. Help me set a day. Lets get organized and stop the corruption of the Mr. Paulson. He has lied to the people of the USA and he should be thrown out. We should stop funding this bail out immediately. The banks are blackmailing USA citizens. No money for them, no credit for us. This must not be allowed. People are loosing their homes. Families are living on the streets. This is not
the USA. WE MUST DO THE RIGHT THING AND HELP OUR CITIZENS..

Vetted, not vetted...irregardless, the public found the Africa comment easy to believe of Ms Palin because she had so many times previously shown her lack of intelligence and lack of comprehension.

vetted, not vetted, who cares. if the story is good for our side then its good. being true or untrue is meaningless. remember the ends justify any means it takes to get there

Has anyone else noticed that MSNBC always screws up its shows? I watch MSNBC almost exclusively and feel their on-air talent is good, but not that good. For example, I can't stand Norah O'Donnell's laugh. She sounds like a drunk sailor in a bar. Every show she has to get in three to five of her obnoxious guffaws. I digress.

Anyway, every day the talent on air will say "And here is a clip of....." then the clip will not be played and the talent will say "Oh, guess we don't have that clip."

It happens so often I wonder who is running things over there and why can't they get something right, playing video clips on cue.

I don't know anything about TV production, but playing clips does not seem that difficult a task. At the minimum one would think after the first few errors that they would subsequently get it right.

So this error does not surprise me. Who is running the show, interns? If so, what are the interns smoking on their breaks.

Why did Huffpost was so late to correct the error? All they do is put links on their blogs.
I have been posting the NYtimes link and moderator kept on deleting.

Not good job by moderator or HuffPost.

That's how blogs work. They link to other sites. This ain't the NY Times or the Washington Post, with hundreds of reporters and editors.

exactly. even after I forwarded the NYTimes link for the Hoax news, the post were deleted. Why so much delay by HuffPost? Because they were taken for a ride? Thats why the remark "Not good job by moderator or HuffPost.".

This does not change my perception of a woman who just does not have much knowledge about the basics of life, politics, race, religion etc. Whoever attempted to fix the story has failed. She is just dumb and has no future anywhere but Alaska.

You hate her becasue you disagree with her. Just because she lives a sterotypical "traditional" lifesyle..AKA..In a long term Marriage to the same man in a seemingly loving relationship, has a large family that again seems to all be happy and stands for values that at least half the nationaif not more agrees with doesn't make her "Dumb". Your intolerance to her values are just as bad as
people that are intolerant of of less "traditional" lifestyles.....

My daughter finished HS, finished University, worked, did a Master's Degree, got married, had 2 kids, and is now working on another Master's Degree ....

My son also finished University, is working and taking more courses at night to further his career.

Palin's son: didn't finish HS, joined the Army when he got in trougle with the law.
Palin's daughter: didn't finish HS and is having a baby at 17; she is marrying a HS drop-out.

I like MY family values better.

It shouldn't change your perception, since this doesn't change the story. The aides leaked the story, and they haven't been identified.

The hoax is that someone pretended to be the aide who leaked it. Got it ?

WE voted out the republicans and the Bush administration. However it seems that they just won't go away. Now we find out Paulson is a liar and totally in bed with the banks. What can we do to stop them from stealing our tax dollars. The Bail-Out dollars were allocated to help everyone not just the banks and the slew of corperations that have lined up for the welfare. Bail-out is just an obvious ruse. Using tax payers money in the name of economic stimulus and then giving it to the banks is just a scam. Our economy is a consumer driven base economy. So doe it not make sense to give the taxpayers dollars back to the taxpayers to stimulate their country's economy.
Therefore, I propose giving one million dollars to every United State Citizen with the stipulation that 750,000 must be kept in a 10 year unbreakable CD and allowing the rest ($250,000.) to be accessed by the citizens to purchase homes, cars, pay off bills, catch up with mortgages and educate their children. This is the true way to bail out the USA as well as injecting money into the banks. If this help does not come right away it will final nail in the coffin of middle class. It will be official at that point, a new USA will emerge a country of the super rich and the very poor.
The Republicans would have achieved their goal destruction of the middle class

Once again for those who cannot read.

The part of the story that was false, was who released the information.

Not the information itself!

LOL. That was the hoax, and know you are saying that it is reliable?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:16 PM on 11/13/2008

Not that I wouldn't want to believe the story since its so plausible, but that's like saying Screwball was discredited about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, but the story is still true. Which is clearly not the case.

You need to vet sources as well as content. If one doesn't hold, without additional corroboration, the other falls as well.

You don't GET IT ..... since he wasn't the source, the CONTENT of the story about Palin isn't debunked.

Your example makes no sense, you clearly don't understand this story.

Yeah, that's it exactly. Until and unless someone credible *confirms* the story (which I'll bet a whole lot of money never happens), we should all just assume that the story is as false as this messenger (who I suspect is also the *only* messenger).

C'mon folks! There is so much about Govenor Palin to mock -- stuff on video! -- why obsess over this? Well OK, I'll admit, it's kinda fun....NO!...must...take...high...road (why is taking the high road always so painful?)

There are so who can not read and some idiots.
If the anonymous source who leaked the info don't exists then how come the story itself is correct?
you are still drunk.

Bhola: that is not who leaked the info .... the real source isn't known, yet.

THE HOAX is that someone SAID they leaked it, but he had NOT ... that is the hoax! The anonymous source DOES exist.

Read like a grown up ... there are two issues here.

LOL. I wouldn't call anyone drunk if I were you. You have no idea what you are talking about. The hoax was the claim that Eisenstadt was the source. This is not true, he was not the source, that is why it is being called a hoax. The source was someone else. The fact that Eisenstadt does not exist has nothing to do with the credibility of the true source. Do you follow now?

Not quite, FightingtheRight;

The information WAS leaked by aides, according to FOX.

Someone ELSE came along, and said HE was the source; that is true

What is NOT true, the hoax, is that this person lied about being the SOURCE.

Nobody but Palin has denied the original story/leak .... I hope we find out who is the source, but that person is probably writing a book about it all.

Palin didn't actually deny it, she suggested something she said during the debate preps had been taken out of context. This might be true, it might have been a joke or something, but clearly Governor Palin knows exactly which of her statements the true anonymous source is talking about.

it's a newsroom...newsrooms are as busy if not busier than trading room floors. i'm sure the producer who passed on the email has either been sacked or severely reprimanded. what the producer should've done was a cursory online check on the name...and place a phone call or two to firm up the story. but sometimes these kids (and yes, it's scary to note how many sub-25 year olds who think within the box are responsible for the information you consume) lack the fundamental basics of journalism. they accept info from news wires and allegedly reputable websites as given...but they shouldn't. as wonderful as huffpo is, i distinctly remember hp getting the final campaigning day schedules for a presidential candidate wrong -- the locations were correct but hp listed them in reverse.
