NEW YORK — MSNBC was the victim of a hoax when it reported that an adviser to John McCain had identified himself as the source of an embarrassing story about former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, the network said Wednesday.

David Shuster, an anchor for the cable news network, said on air Monday that Martin Eisenstadt, a McCain policy adviser, had come forth and identified himself as the source of a Fox News Channel story saying Palin had mistakenly believed Africa was a country instead of a continent.

Eisenstadt identifies himself on a blog as a senior fellow at the Harding Institute for Freedom and Democracy. Yet neither he nor the institute exist; each is part of a hoax dreamed up by a filmmaker named Eitan Gorlin and his partner, Dan Mirvish, the New York Times reported Wednesday.

The Eisenstadt claim had mistakenly been delivered to Shuster by a producer and was used in a political discussion Monday afternoon, MSNBC said.

"The story was not properly vetted and should not have made air," said Jeremy Gaines, network spokesman. "We recognized the error almost immediately and ran a correction on air within minutes."

Gaines told the Times that someone in the network's newsroom had presumed the information solid because it was passed along in an e-mail from a colleague.

The hoax was limited to the identity of the source in the story about Palin _ not the Fox News story itself. While Palin has denied that she mistook Africa for a country, the veracity of that report was not put in question by the revelation that Eisenstadt is a phony.

Eisenstadt's "work" had been quoted and debunked before. The Huffington Post said it had cited Eisenstadt in July on a story regarding the Hilton family and McCain.

Among the other victims were political blogs for the Los Angeles Times and The New Republic, each of which referenced false material from Eisenstadt's blog.

And in July, Jonathan Stein of Mother Jones magazine blogged an item about Eisenstadt speaking on Iraqi television about a casino in Baghdad's "Green Zone."

Stein later realized he'd been had.

"Kudos to the inventor of this whole thing," Stein wrote. "My only consolation is that if I had as much time on my hands as he clearly does, I probably would have figured this out and saved myself a fair amount of embarrassment."

Right now she is a hot topic. We will start to move forward. The election was just days ago and the country will move on, so give her enough rope she will hang herself! She has as much chance in being pres. as I do.

HUFFINGTON POST: someone needs to re-write this story for people who have no reading comprehension skills !!!!!

THE STORY IS: Someone CLAIMED TO BE THE SOURCE. HE WAS NOT. That is the HOAX.

The REAL sources to the Palin story have not come forward!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:37 AM on 11/13/2008

Wow! The Source...the Hoax...made it up!
There is no one to come forward.

Again, the story is not a hoax. The person claiming to be the source of the story is the hoax. Therefore, the person behind the story HAS not come forward.

Faux News & Carl Cameron were punked by Esinstadt.

The press should write about that, about how Faux will report anything without vetting it.

EXACTLY - THIS STORY IS A HOAX THAT WAS FIRST PUT OUT THERE BY FAUX NEWS VIA CARL CAMERON WITH BILL O'REILLY.

SOMEONE SHOULD BE DOING THE STORY ABOUT HOW FAUX NEWS INTRODUCED THIS HOAX INTO THE NEWS CYCLE.

I AM SURE THAT IS WHAT THE HOAXERS HAD IN MIND - SHAMEING FAUX NEWS. THEY WERE SUCCESSFUL.

WHETHER THERE ARE REAL SOURCES - WHO KNOWS.

THE REAL STORY HERE SHOULD BE ABOUT FAUX'S SLIP-SHOD JOURNALISM.

IF YOU NOTICE FAUX IS RETRACTING NOTHING - THEY ARE HOPING NO ONE NOTICES CARL CAMERON'S MISTAKE AND IT QUIETLY GOES AWAY. AND NO DOUBT BILLO FEELS THE SAME WAY.

What are you saying?
That Shuster gets his info from Fox?

Now that's great journalism!

Did anyone else notice that Palin was not mentioned ONCE on Rachel Maddow last night?

A big sloppy kiss to Rachel and my undying love and respect for not following the pack! Might this be the start of a new pattern of Palin-free TV? Can Huffington Post please be next?

Well today it is all Palin all the time on MSNBC because of the Governor's conference in Miami. She gave a press conference and took 3 questions, none of which she really answered and then she just played her speech at the Governor's conference. She is stilll f'ng campaigning.

Please let her go away.

serves MSNBC right for talking so much about Sarah Phalin. I'm not defending her, I'm just tired of hearing about her.

I have stopped watching Morning Bloe because there was too much brown nosing.

You did not make it clear that the story is true, only that this Eisenstadt wanted to take credit for it; THAT was not true. But Palen did not know that Africa was a country. Now I'm sure Faux news and Palin will be saying the whole thing is a hoax.

Palin has never really denied the allegation. She says it was mean spirited of the jerks to repeat it. What she fails to comprehend is, it doesn't matter who said it, it only matters what they said.

The MSM, including MSNBC, have been punked by the Bush Administration for 8 years. "Eisenstadt" is an amateur. If there were any journalists left in the profession, this would not be as easy.

The night it was discovered that the McCain staffer attack was a hoax, I monitored Faux News throughout the evening, waiting to see an announcement that Ashley Todd had confessed. Even though Faux had gleefully trumpeted the false attack claims daily, until they were revealed as a hoax, the announcement that it was all a fake didn't make an immediate appearance. The story that night on Fixed News was Greta Van Sustern demanding apologies from the Obama camp for perceived insults and poor treatment of Sarah Palin. Talk about Chutzpah!

I am sure we'll see the old double standard of "How dare the liberal media..." Only non-rightwingnut outlets appear to be held responsible for every mistake.

So MSNBC decided to run with a Palin story without properly vetting it, and it turned out to be a malicious joke that made them look like idiots. Sounds like McCain's VP selection process.

This is the same situation as the story about Bush's military records.

Bush definitely DID NOT serve his entire tour of duty, but the records produced and given to Dan rather were fakes.

That conclusion -- that 'they were fakes' -- has never been established. Alleged -- loudly, repeatedly and with great smoking emotion -- yes. Established? No.

What has been established, however, is that the information which the memos contained is accurate. The long-time secretary of that Texas Air Guard unit -- Marian Carr Knox, Col Killian's secretary -- corroborated the information in the memos, but said that they were not typed by her. She also said that the memos could have been typed by someone else who had access to view other original documents.

In any event, if the information contained in the memos is accurate, it is hard to avoid the conclusion that a.) Bush dodged the draft (as many other young men from politically-connected families were so dishonorably permitted to do), b.) performed abysmally as a pilot, refused to take the ordered remedial training, and refused take the physical -- which included a drug test, and c.) then just disappeared (apparently secure in the knowledge that his father's political connections would simply, and effectively, cover it up.

For the better part of his final year of his service, George W. Bush was AWOL.. Absence without leave in excess of 30 days is desertion. George W. Bush is a draft-dodger and a deserter.

Please read more carefully. The hoax was WHO was the leak inside the McCain camp not the information that was leaked (the WHAT part.) The headline is a bit misleading... you don't really get the whole picture unless you read to the end. I wish they would opt for headlines that are less titillating and more accurate.

Yeah, some Fox correspondent talking to O'Reilly mentioned the Palin/Africa thing, and I believe that was the first time it was brought up.
