WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration is expected to draw 1 million-plus to the capital, and already some lawmakers have stopped taking ticket requests and hotels have booked up.

Some people are bartering on Craigslist for places to stay for the Jan. 20 ceremony when the Illinois senator takes the oath of office. They are offering cash or even help with dishes for residents willing to open up their homes.

The National Park Service, which is planning for an inaugural crowd of at least 1 million, will clear more viewing space along the Pennsylvania Avenue parade route. Jumbo TV screens will line the National Mall so people can watch the inauguration and parade, park service spokesman David Barna said Thursday.

The District of Columbia's delegate, Eleanor Holmes Norton, is urging planners to use arenas and stadiums to help with overflow crowds wanting to view the ceremonies on big-screen TVs. She is also urging churches to hold viewing parties.

"You can't judge by past inaugurations. It's going to break all the records," Norton said. "They're going to come with or without tickets. ... It's each man and woman for himself."

The city's police chief, Cathy Lanier, said organizers brought in an additional 3,000 officers from forces around the country to help with the last inauguration. This time, the request probably will be for about 4,000 officers.

Because of a lawsuit, people should have more standing room along the crowded parade route. War protesters sued after President George W. Bush's last inauguration, forcing the government to open up more free public viewing space between the Capitol and White House.

U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman ruled in March that the park service violated its own rules by giving preferential treatment in ticketing for bleacher seats along the parade route for supporters of the government over its critics. Friedman wrote the inauguration "is not a private event."

New rules to be issued Monday will lower the number of ticketed bleacher seats along the parade route from 20,000 seats to 8,700, leaving much more of the route open to people without tickets, Barna said.

Seat tickets had sold for between $15 and $150 in 2005 to help pay for the inaugural parade. Details for the 2009 parade tickets have not been set because Obama's Presidential Inaugural Committee, which organizes the parade, is being formed.

There will also be designated "free speech" areas for protesters along the parade route, Barna said.

The inauguration has been designated a National Special Security Event, giving the U.S. Secret Service the lead in coordinating all law enforcement agencies to secure the event. There are 58 federal, state and local law enforcement agencies working together.

The largest crowd ever recorded on the National Mall was for President Lyndon B. Johnson's 1965 inauguration. At the time, the park service estimated 1.2 million people descended on the area. In 1981, President Ronald Reagan's inauguration drew about 500,000 people, and President Bill Clinton's 1993 inauguration drew about 800,000 people, according to park service estimates.

Of course, the crowds can always thin out. Ronald Reagan's second swearing-in ceremony had to be moved indoors, and the parade was canceled when the temperature dropped below 10 degrees (with a wind chill at 10 degrees to 20 degrees below zero.) John F. Kennedy's inauguration in 1961 came with a blanket of snow; still, 1 million people turned out.

Congressional offices are reporting tens of thousands of requests for the 240,000 free tickets for the inauguration ceremony. As of Thursday, the office of Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., had received 26,000 requests. Webb sent a letter Thursday to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who heads the Joint Congressional Inaugural Committee, requesting that Virginia's proximity to Washington be considered in its allotment.

EBay Inc., the parent company of listing and sales sites eBay, StubHub and Kijiji, said it will not allow tickets to the inauguration to be sold on its Web sites. The company made the decision after meeting with committee representatives, eBay spokeswoman Nichola Sharpe told The Associated Press.

The inauguration will come at the end of a four-day holiday for federal workers, following the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 19. Many area schools and some universities have canceled classes or are considering it.

I agree. Look, 3+ million turned out on October 30, 2004 to see the Red Sox victory parade in Boston. Now, as special as that moment was (yes, I'm a 4th generation Red Sox fan), it's like a kid's 3rd birthday party compared to this. There will be more than a million spectators to see President Obama and Vice President Biden swear to preserve, protect and defend the Consitution.

DC will be wall-to-wall people. I wish I could be there! But I have requested the day off, and will be watching C-SPAN in my living room, with good food at hand and easy access to a clean loo.

I didn't watch either of Bush's inaugurations. In '01 I watched "Lilies of the Field" on TCM. In '05, I had to work. No one I know watched those buffoons cross their fingers and utter false oaths.

Come on, deancostanza, don't hate the player hate the game. Like Serena and Venus Williams, Obama is nothing like we've seen before. He will change the game for the better, make the world take notice, and encourage subsequent leaders who come after him to maintain his momentum. The U.S. is back, YES!

I'm sorry but it won't be too difficult to be better than one of the worst presidents in history. That is a really low bar to cross.

Why don't you and Rush and all of the idiots from the Right give Obama a chance? He isn't even in office and Rush has placed the responsibility for the recession on his shoulders. Give us a break and spew your hate elsewhere or join the 75% of the people who believe the country will be better off in four years.

This photo of the construction taking place reminds me of those western movies where the guy's in jail and he can see the scaffold for his hanging being erected just out his window. Just a thought.

Uh . . . if you look at the caption on that photo, you'll see it was taken in 1981. That was Ronald Reagan up there.

He survived his presidency (barely).

Oh dear - I meant the photo showing the White House and whatever is being built on the lawn. I flashed on this picture of Bush looking out the window at the construction, watching preparations for his "hanging." OK, it was lame.

What a change in America's sense of belonging and overall excitement about the incoming Obama administration, more than ONE MILLION PEOPLE will be in Washington for this historic event.

The GOP tries to play this down, but they can NEVER compare the incredible feeling of dread, uncertainty, fear and ANGER that was expressed during bush's 2000 inauguration ceremony and the egg filled procession to the White House. Egg filled because so many protesters threw eggs at bush's limo in protest of his illegitimate installation as the 43rd president.

It is refreshing to actually feel good about the prospect of the Obama administration, the prospect of competency, of ethical adherence to the laws that make up our country as well as the REAL strength (not swagger), Mr Obama exudes.

YES WE CAN MAKE THE USA A BETTER PLACE FOR ALL AMERICANS!!

I'm going with a couple of flight attendant friends (unfortunately, it's not as seedy as it sounds, they just have free airfare) and we're already looking for a place to stay. Wouldn't it be nice if some church, union hall, etc would open their doors to a few sleeping baggers?

Quoting the article: "There will also be designated "free speech" areas for protesters along the parade route"

Ever since they were created, to keep protesters (and reality) away from Bush and the media, I have been vehemently opposed to "free speech zones" as inherently un-American, and I still am. But just this once, I will have to take a little bit of satisfaction in seeing people who share my sentiments giving full-throated expression to our feelings from OUTSIDE the so-called "free-speech zones," while those who have cheered on the bullies, cheered on the war and the hate and the suppression of dissent, finally get a taste of their own medicine. After Mr. Obama is sworn in, I hope the whole concept of building a cage and calling it a "free-speech zone" will be a thing of the past.

ggm68,
Don't kid yourself; this kind of thing (caging off "free speech zones, etc...) will only become more institutionalized and much more prevelant under Obama's administration. As it is now, he only will address a crowd behind three inches of bullet-proof and shatter-proof glass.

I don't know, you've got two politically opposing ideology groups next to each other like that and one of them calls Obama a terrorist one more time and I'd be tempted to punch them in the nose. Riots will probably ensue, but I don't think I'll be able to help myself honestly if I was in that position. Probably could at least not make it look like a cage though...

I live in California and can't afford the trip but have already requested the day off to watch all the events. Usually I tune in one of the cable networks (MSNBC #1 or CNN #2) but will also watch CSPAN which covers without commentary - for example prior to Senator Obama's acceptance on the 4th cable news talked before hand -- CSPAN showed the crowds, the Pledge of Allegiance, National Anthem, Opening Prayer without comment. I am sure they will cover the entire event and I will be one of the millions watching from home. This is the first time in my long life that I've wanted to watch everything and am so hopeful after 8 years of darkness and lies.

I'll be home here in Texas, Lemon - with about the same itinerary as you - CSPAN will be the station of choice at my house too. We should have the best seats and views of all - although it would be great to have a close-up spot in person and be a part of the whole shebang. How sweet a day that will be.

Host an inaugural brunch and invite other Obama supporters. It's going to be a day of celebration for much of the country. I am going to let my kids come home early from school to watch this historical event. I can't believe the number of people already talking about what they plan to do on January 20. Many want to go. Those who don't want to party.
