From ABC:

Thomas Beatie, the controversial "pregnant man" who gave birth to a daughter earlier this year, reveals to Barbara Walters in an exclusive interview that he is pregnant again with his second child.

Thomas Beatie, a transgender, welcomed a baby girl, Susan, June 29. Since sharing the story of Susan's birth with ABC News, he and his wife, Nancy Beatie, hadn't spoken to the media until they sat down last month with Walters.

Thomas Beatie, who is in his first trimester, tells Walters he did not go back on the male hormone testosterone after Susan's birth so he could have another baby.

Watch Barbara Walters talk about it on "The View":

I am surprised at some of the lack of knowledge about basic biology, not so surprised about the confusion about the law as it applies to transgenders, and yes Jshankel, transgenders can get married.

Hmm,
Has a vagina and ovaries. She's not a man. I don't have a problem with transsexuals. If she has a complete transformation and gets pregnant, it would be a feat.

I find this story disturbing. As a liberal gay man, I fully support equal rights for the transgender community and encourage any person wrestling with their identity to lead a full, open and honest life. However, Thomas Beattie was born genetically a female but now lives as a man because that is who he really is; that is why he is transitioning.

Well, Thomas, men do not get pregnant. If you are truly a man then live the life a man, don't try to have it both ways; either you're a man or you're a woman (and only you really know). Based on this story it seems that you may be conflicted...

you're thinking like a Mormon who squeals, "you're redefining marriage!!" So what if we are? Have the "old ways" been such a big fat success? No, and neither have the traditional ways of thinking about gender. Open your mind and heart. We don't need gay men who think like Mormon throwbacks to antiquated models that made many, many people's lives miserable.

This person does want it both ways! She had her boobs cut off and took hormones to grow a little moustache, but she's still a woman because she has a vagina and a womb!
Obviously she likes the world-wide attention.

sa2968, I am in agreement with you for this and a whole lot of other reasons.

How strange that you have most likely experienced discrimination by those who see the world in polarities (gay/straight, good/bad, natural/unnatural, science/religion) and yet you are ready to jump right into discriminating against someone else based on a false belief in polarized righteousness.

The world is not always polarized. Perhaps you might consider that Beattie isn't getting pregnant for attention, but he/she identifies with both genders. Or, perhaps Beattie identifies fully as a male, but still wants the experience of pregnancy. I know a number of men who have expressed that desire. The range of human experience is a full spectrum. Just as some people are neither gay nor straight (there are many who are bisexual or even asexual), it is equally possible for someone to feel at home in both gender roles without being labeled "conflicted".

To make the argument that a transgendered pregnancy isn't natural therefore it is "bad" is exactly the same as making the argument that becoming transgendered is "bad" just because it is not natural. It seems hypocritical to condemn one, but not the other.

I personally see many concerns that may come up regarding a male pregnancy - specifically how the hormones might affect the child. But that's not a judgment against the person for their own human experience.

It is good to keep an open mind and keep compassion alive, whether you agree or disagree with someone's decision. Don't condemn other people for their own experience of being human.

I agree with you. The person claims to be a man, yet is pg again. I say Thomas has issues. I say Thomas wants to have it both ways!!!! So just by removing her breasts and growing a beard doesn't make Thomas a man. Hello, Thomas is now on child number two. I wouldn't be surprise is Thomas reverts back to being a woman.

Funny how liberals can deny science and biology in a case like this, but ask them about intelligent design or creationism and they scoff mightily.

Hypocrisy is always unbecoming.

And what does the science say? I am really interested in your response.

It would seem that science and biology were fully realized here.....I'm confused about how it is denied??? How would this have happened without science and biology.

I'm a liberal who believes wholeheartedly that intelligent design and creationism should be taught.....in church.....in Sunday school....any where you God-people want to congregate, but not in my children's school, please. Those concepts are not based in science, so how do they have a place in science class? But then my children have aspirations beyond a 6th grade education and marriage to a first cousin.

BTW...the earth is round not flat and revolves around the sun...it is not the center of the universe.

There is no denying science and biology here. What planet did you come from? And forget the "intelligent design" crap. And crap is what it is. It is you who chooses to ignore science in this case. You just prefer to stick your head in the sand and believe whatever your church/bible teaches you. There is no science in your bible. It's just a lot of blubbering idiots writing fiction!

And precisely how do you think this denies science and biology? You =do= realize that the pregnant "man" is actually a transgendered individual who has not had the final surgery, i.e. he was born female and still has female reproductive organs? I would assume his pregnancy is more or less the same as that of any other individual born with a uterus. I fail to see how this has anything to do with scoffing at creationism or intelligent design (which, frankly, deserve to be scoffed at by anyone with a lick of common sense or education).

Men can't have babies. If you're having babies then you are not biologically a man - that simple. This is kind of a ridiculous story actually, but if it chases Palin off the radar for a little while...well.....

NOT a man, period.

I consider myself a liberal. But biology is biology. If you're born with a vagina, you're a female and always will be.

Gender is not always about biology. Just because one has a vagina doesn't mean one has the same desires or feels like a woman. Anyway, it's none of our business. If they are happy then who are we to question their way of life.

> You are what you are born

Nope, sorry, you are what you are legally designated to be, not what someone on the internet insists you are.

Fortunately for everyone involved, it matters not one rancid dingo's kidney that you happen to be unable to accept that. Your opinion does not matter.

The law is clear and the medical designations are clear. Transgendered people are, entirely and without qualification, deemed to be the gender they have selected for themselves.

Thomas Beatie is a man according to the law, according to his medical records, according to his tax returns, according to his marriage certificate, according to the birth certificates of his children and according to each and every relevant social designation.

Nowhere, anywhere, is he designated as a woman except by people posting their irrelevant opinions online.

You can deny it if you like. You can also insist that the United States is a part of Great Britain if you like. Doesn't make it in any way true.

Every document you listed was created by man, and except for the medical records, none of them are based on science. Now if Thomasina's doctor certified this crap, he should be checked out.

Sorry... the legality of something doesn't make it true. Medical records don't make something true.

If I cut a potato into the shape of a banana, does it make it a banana?

According to you it is now a banana, unfortunately, it's still a potato, an altered potato.

If I take a monkey and surgically replace it's arms with legs, does it make it a cat?

According to you it does, unfortunately, it's still a monkey, an altered monkey, but still a monkey.

Perhaps transgender in process

She is NOT a pregnant MAN. She is a pregnant woman who is transgendered. This couple have made a lot of money with their story and this makes me wonder if they took this story public to make a fortune. I'm tired of hearing about them. It's not strange for a woman to be pregnant.

So that would make her "dommy" instead of "maddy"? However much they have made, P.T Barnum would have upped the ante by a huge sum and he would have laughed all the way to the bank.

but what does all the testosterone "she" took to look more like a man do to the developing fetus? Even though she may not have taken it during the pregnancy it's got to be stored in fat cells and released during the pregnancy. has this ever been studied?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:33 PM on 11/13/2008

I wondered that myself, and I've never heard of anyone in this situation, transgendering FTM who has been pregnant. I have no idea if it's been studied.
But the baby girl seems normal, thank goodness.

I have no problem with the fact that he and his wife have decided to do this. I wouldn't care if one blurb was spent mentioning this. The thing that bugs me is the insistance that the news say a man is having a baby and that it appears to be a HUGE deal. Carrying a baby is a biological event that occurs in the uterus of a genetic female. Psychological sexual identification has nothing to do with the pregnancy itself. And so this "story" or "breaking news" is very dull and uninteresting because millions of women do this every year. When science makes it possible for a genetic male with active male reproductive organs to carry a baby, then I'll be impressed.

Until then I hope this family does well and that the overexposure doesn't hurt their relationship.

I agree. When they're able to transplant a uterus on a male to female person, then I'll be listening. But until that happens, I don't understand why he's allowing his life to be sensationalized.

This couple despite their unusual circumstances appear to be loving intelligent people who happen to have a beautiful baby...

Who are we to judge these people considering how the world at times can be a dangerous and uncaring place at times...

They deserve our compassion and understanding...

Who are we to judge? It is they who have brashly placed themselves in the court of public opinion and are no doubt making a fortune off of the publicity.

I'm not judging. They can have all the kiddies they can bear so long as they're good parents. But to say that a 'man' is having a baby when 'he' obviously still has a vagina (one presumes) and clearly a uterus just doesn't fly. If 'she' is supposed to be a 'man' then she has some more 'work' that needs to be done. Now, if a biological man somehow comes up preggers, that's a story, but not a transgender who's having their cake and eating it too. Let's be technically correct here, that's all that bothers me about the headline and attendant fuss.
