With John McCain set to hit the trail for Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss' runoff election campaign, the question on the minds of Democrats in the state is when or if Barack Obama will follow suit.

Jim Martin, the Democratic challenger in Georgia, was able to keep Chambliss under the 50 percent mark during the first round of voting. Since then, however, the GOP has redoubled its efforts, sending or promising to send party luminaries like Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin and McCain to campaign on Chambliss' behalf.

And while the Obama team already has a strong infrastructure in the state and is dispatching more volunteers, Democratic operatives in Georgia are concerned that the president-elect won't be coming himself.

"Why isn't Obama coming to Georgia?" one source asked. "He could possibly come right up until election day -- but McCain's actually here today."

Asked if the president-elect would make the trip, the Obama team did not immediately return a request for comment.

There are, clearly, areas where he could help and hurt himself by jumping into the Georgia runoff ring.

Alan Abramowitz, a political science professor at Emory University, notes that, with the presidential election over, Obama is now trying "to broaden his appeal and act presidential. So he is not in campaign mode anymore, whereas for McCain it doesn't matter." Moreover, if Obama were to show up and Martin lost, it could send a poor message.

"This is a group that has never been comfortable with hard-hitting politics," said a Democrat helping the Martin campaign, "and I would bet they don't want to risk political capital on seat #58."

On the flip side, Obama could earn even more veneration among Democrats if he were to help pull Martin across the finish line. In the process he would demonstrate a dedication to, or sense of, party.

Certainly, Abramowitz says, Obama could make a difference. Nearly four million people voted in Georgia on November 4. That number is expected to drop to approximately 1.5 million when the runoff occurs on December 2. The campaign best equipped at getting people to the polls, consequently, stands the best shot of winning.

"I still think it is possible that he may end up coming down," said Abramowitz. "And from a strategic standpoint it makes sense for him to come down, if he does, at the end. It would help stimulate and increase Democratic turnout."

As such, a few sources said they wouldn't be surprised if Obama ultimately came to Georgia -- just closer to the actual runoff date.

Send Bill and Hilary, send Michele Obama. Send Volunteers. Make calls.

Joe Biden and Obama should stay away from it all.

I agree, send surrogates and lots of cash, that's pretty much how the campaign handled Penn.

I think we all should show Max Cleland how much we appreciated his service to our country by doing whatever it takes to get Jim Martin elected. Saxby Chambliss deserves payback for the horrible way he maligned Mr. Cleland.

Senator Obama has no difficulty being magnanimous with respect to Joe "the Lieberman", surely he can spare a few hours campaigning to rid this country of a callous ingrate like Chambliss. It would affirm my belief that he, President elect Obama, is the one that we've been searchig for.

If Obama doesn't go down there I will 'Eat my shorts'.

Barack has a lot going on at the moment with his transition team etc. McCain is just sat around twiddling his thumbs so he's got time to go and campaign for the disgrace called Chambliss. Maybe they can talk about their prior ad campaigns during quiet times.

In short, catch 22 situation. Martin wins, Obama's good. He loses, Obama gets hurt, albeit slightly.

No, he needs to refrain from making this a referendum on him.

He needs to send in help and support, definitely. Send some stars from GOTV. Also, I would imagine there will be a disenfranchising attempt. The key to this is going to be GOTV.
I am hoping that PE Obama's people did not pick up stakes and go. I am hoping the structure is still there and operating.
McCain did not have anything really going on there, correct? Maybe that is why it seems the Repugs are doing more than the Dems. They had to scramble. We were already there, right?

Why isn't Hillary there? She's still a high level democrat, right? Or did she just fold her tent and sneak away in the night.

While Hillary is huge, Barack is a ROCK STAR down here to those who voted on 11/4. He really does NEED to come down here-- that's the only way people will actually show up again to vote. I plan on voting again 12/2, but don't know how many other Dem's will take the time to do so. That being said, if we got a 'rally call' from Barack, I'm sure it would happen!!

Besides, I'm dying to take my kids to see him if he comes here again! ;)

President-Elect Barack Obama is not going to Georgia... he has plenty of more important things to do.

I actually think one of the thoughtful things President-Elect Obama could be doing to help enact his agenda of change would be to campaign in Georgia for that Senate seat. The President-Elect could convincingly argue that the changes America elected him to make would be better and quicker served by a 60 seat Democratic majority in the senate. Helping Democrats win this seat would truly shift the balance of power to Barak and his agenda of change. I do see campaigning in Georgia as somewhat risky, but I think the benefits of a super-majority outweigh them.

The burden is on Jim Martin to "convincingly argue the changes" GEORGIA needs. Sen. Obama does not need the full 60 Dem seats. There are at least four moderate repubes and independents who live in tough towns for re-election who will cross the aisle to help pass the agenda, e.g., Susan Collins.

Martin needs to step up to the plate and convince the Georgian electorate to come out and vote for him ~ not President-elect Obama, he has other important things that he's working on.

I don't want Obama in GA right now when the rhetoric and anger is still high, and you know that one Ms. Palin has done her best to keep it going...

Keep Obama safe. Period.

The devil went down to Georgia, he was looking for a vote to steal.
He was in a bind 'cos he was way behind: he was willin' to make a deal.
When he came across this young man sawin' on a fiddle and playin' it hot.
And the devil jumped upon a hickory stump and said: "Boy let me tell you what:
"I bet you didn't know it, but I'm a fiddle player too.
"And if you'd care to take a dare, I'll make a bet with you.
"Now you play a pretty good fiddle, boy, but give the devil his due:
"I bet a herd of goats against your vote, 'cos I think I'm better than you."
The boy said: "My name's Johnny and it might be a sin,
"But I'll take your bet, your gonna regret, 'cos I'm the best that's ever been."

Johnny you rosin up your bow and play your fiddle hard.
'Cos hells broke loose in Georgia and the devil deals it hard.
And if you win you get this shiny herd made of goats.
But if you lose, the devil gets your vote.
