With John McCain set to hit the trail for Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss' runoff election campaign, the question on the minds of Democrats in the state is when or if Barack Obama will follow suit.

Jim Martin, the Democratic challenger in Georgia, was able to keep Chambliss under the 50 percent mark during the first round of voting. Since then, however, the GOP has redoubled its efforts, sending or promising to send party luminaries like Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin and McCain to campaign on Chambliss' behalf.

And while the Obama team already has a strong infrastructure in the state and is dispatching more volunteers, Democratic operatives in Georgia are concerned that the president-elect won't be coming himself.

"Why isn't Obama coming to Georgia?" one source asked. "He could possibly come right up until election day -- but McCain's actually here today."

Asked if the president-elect would make the trip, the Obama team did not immediately return a request for comment.

There are, clearly, areas where he could help and hurt himself by jumping into the Georgia runoff ring.

Alan Abramowitz, a political science professor at Emory University, notes that, with the presidential election over, Obama is now trying "to broaden his appeal and act presidential. So he is not in campaign mode anymore, whereas for McCain it doesn't matter." Moreover, if Obama were to show up and Martin lost, it could send a poor message.

"This is a group that has never been comfortable with hard-hitting politics," said a Democrat helping the Martin campaign, "and I would bet they don't want to risk political capital on seat #58."

On the flip side, Obama could earn even more veneration among Democrats if he were to help pull Martin across the finish line. In the process he would demonstrate a dedication to, or sense of, party.

Certainly, Abramowitz says, Obama could make a difference. Nearly four million people voted in Georgia on November 4. That number is expected to drop to approximately 1.5 million when the runoff occurs on December 2. The campaign best equipped at getting people to the polls, consequently, stands the best shot of winning.

"I still think it is possible that he may end up coming down," said Abramowitz. "And from a strategic standpoint it makes sense for him to come down, if he does, at the end. It would help stimulate and increase Democratic turnout."

As such, a few sources said they wouldn't be surprised if Obama ultimately came to Georgia -- just closer to the actual runoff date.

Is Bill Clinton a southern boy. I think Bill and Hillary ought to go but Obama could get his volunteers going again making calls. I wonder if it is too late for that?

I agree. Clinton could easily do this without having to be directly connected to Obama which would also avoid any of the controversy between the two of them (part of why he didn't do that much for Obama himself).

Also, if Obama goes down, that could just as easily feed the fires of the people who are afraid of one party domination. Or even make the appearance of looking greedy by trying to gain too much sway over the senate also. Better at this point to be presidential and get ready for his first term.

However, if he does go down, I think it should be in a small way, making a personal appearance without much advanced notice. No more of the big splashy park or stadium speeches. He needs to focus the attention on Martin, not himself.

Obama sent over 100 people to GA yesterday. They're canvassing and making phone calls. E-mails are being sent as we speak. Black ministers are also involved.

yeah, but taking one day (or half a day) out of his schedule could benefit him (and us) more if we can get enough dems to DC. If he can manage it with his crazy schedule, I would like to see him come here. Too many crazy Repubs here.

I'm afraid too many dems in GA will get complacent and forget about the runoff on Dec 2. I have marked my calendar and set a reminder in Outlook so I don't forget to vote!!!!

Agreed. We need to keep everyone engaged in this vote, particularly the Black vote. I live in southern Georgia and a visit by Obama would keep us all engaged and help voter turnout on December 2.

I don't think it's a good idea for Obama to campaign personally. If Chambliss wins with McCain having campaigned for him, it will be made into an early defeat for Obama by the Republicans and MSM. I would be better to have Southerners like Jim Webb and Sam Nunn do the campaigning.

I agree...My wish list would be:
Bill Clinton
Hillary Clinton
Jim Web
Sam Nunn
Jimmy Carter
The King Family (in black churches mainly)
Edwards (maybe - his wife for sure. She would be a hit with progressive women here.)

Donate Money guys to Mr. Martin

It would be nice if he could. We need to break up the hate here and the under handed lies and actions that surrounds our elections and votes. Please do because are not a red state. We had twice the amount of early votes when they called the state for John McCain. You know that this state ranks low in education, so they guess that will continue to accept their BS. Being educated and fighting with an uneducated person in charge, makes you grow old quick. Please come and stop this crazy mess here.

Karen Handel is Definitely corrupt and probably we'll see her do her usual disqualify votes or

that the votes are lost from all Black / Hispanic areas as she has done before.

BUT Obama should come to shed light on this corrupt system.
How does the RNC get away with this every election

We all know they manipulate votes down here and for once we should not accept it as the norm we should do something.

I am especially pissed that we just say oh well and let this crap keep happening!!

Obama's campaign wasn't a "let this crap keep happening" he planned ahead and had lawyers all over watching and reporting fraud... I am sure he has support in Georgia as well.

The situation is Georgia is this: the rethuglicans will keep this seat because the blacks who stood in line for 8 hours to vote for Obama, will not stand for 8 hours in line to vote for Jim Martin. The only way blacks stand in line is if Obama goes to Georgia and asks them to. If he does, there is a chance the dems get the seat. If not, Saxby goes to Washington. It's up to the African American community to help out Obama. And, to tell you the truth, I just don't see it happening.

Very true that he should come to GA. He should wait until after we can vote early so people will leave the rally and go straight to the polls.

Wow, what a pathetic view you have of black people.

"Nearly four million people voted in Georgia on November 4. That number is expected to drop to approximately 1.5 million when the runoff occurs on December 2."

Those 2.5 million aren't all black people. There will be far more WHITE people that don't bother to show up at the polls than blacks.

America has come a looooong way, some here in Georgia refuses to join us in the new century.

I second that! They have had a huge outpouring of requests to help Martin here in Georgia. Lots of Obama campaign volunteers have spread the word and they are going to be working on getting out the vote just as they did for our President-Elect.

President - Elect Obama does not need to stump for Senatorial candidates.

Not from now, up until inauguration day. And possibly not after inauguration day for a while.

Too many huge problems facing the country that need his attention.

John Lewis would be very effective in Georgia.

This looks like a job for Joe Biden, and the Clintons. O's got bigger fish to fry.

Exactly! Bring out Biden, the Clintons, and John Lewis. Pump some money into some good ads - TV and Radio. Mobilize the GOTV volunteers. We can DO this!

A good TV Ad would do the trick, it's the gift that keeps on giving!!! Solves several problems, he wouldn't have to subject himself to the Confederacy. A commercial could be blown into homes ad nauseum.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:24 PM on 11/13/2008

A great commercial would be fine, or Obama could appear via a telecast at a rally. I hope he does not go to Georgia in person.

Obama should stay out of GA. Let Bill C and Joe Biden do this. What Obama should do is to encourage his supporters to start calling GA and he should do an email blast reminding people when to go to the polls.

Well, now that I just learned that Martin didn't endorse Barack until AFTER he won the nomination in Denver, I say, Barack stay home. If this was Claire in MO or Katherine in KS (his 2 favorite ladies) he would be there in a minute. But for this guy? No way.
