With John McCain set to hit the trail for Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss' runoff election campaign, the question on the minds of Democrats in the state is when or if Barack Obama will follow suit.

Jim Martin, the Democratic challenger in Georgia, was able to keep Chambliss under the 50 percent mark during the first round of voting. Since then, however, the GOP has redoubled its efforts, sending or promising to send party luminaries like Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin and McCain to campaign on Chambliss' behalf.

And while the Obama team already has a strong infrastructure in the state and is dispatching more volunteers, Democratic operatives in Georgia are concerned that the president-elect won't be coming himself.

"Why isn't Obama coming to Georgia?" one source asked. "He could possibly come right up until election day -- but McCain's actually here today."

Asked if the president-elect would make the trip, the Obama team did not immediately return a request for comment.

There are, clearly, areas where he could help and hurt himself by jumping into the Georgia runoff ring.

Alan Abramowitz, a political science professor at Emory University, notes that, with the presidential election over, Obama is now trying "to broaden his appeal and act presidential. So he is not in campaign mode anymore, whereas for McCain it doesn't matter." Moreover, if Obama were to show up and Martin lost, it could send a poor message.

"This is a group that has never been comfortable with hard-hitting politics," said a Democrat helping the Martin campaign, "and I would bet they don't want to risk political capital on seat #58."

On the flip side, Obama could earn even more veneration among Democrats if he were to help pull Martin across the finish line. In the process he would demonstrate a dedication to, or sense of, party.

Certainly, Abramowitz says, Obama could make a difference. Nearly four million people voted in Georgia on November 4. That number is expected to drop to approximately 1.5 million when the runoff occurs on December 2. The campaign best equipped at getting people to the polls, consequently, stands the best shot of winning.

"I still think it is possible that he may end up coming down," said Abramowitz. "And from a strategic standpoint it makes sense for him to come down, if he does, at the end. It would help stimulate and increase Democratic turnout."

As such, a few sources said they wouldn't be surprised if Obama ultimately came to Georgia -- just closer to the actual runoff date.

Are all these opinionators completely dense? Obama is obviously working hard to get ready for the White House! McCain hasn't shown up to work all year anyways, so what does he have to do?:

I hope he does. That would be a tremendous lift to Martin and it certainly would help get out the vote. If we can convince the voters how important this election is, they'll be more likely to go out and vote in the run-off.

Obama has already sent over 100 of his heaviest campaign hitters down here and we're thrilled with this help. With MN and AK going blue, GA would put the DNC over the top. We really do need our President-Elect down here, if only for a token appearance!

It is my goal to get in touch with someone from the Obama campaign and share with them my desire to be a part of his inauguration by reciting a poem I wrote called “We Must Change,” and I kindly ask for your help in doing so.
Go to youtube and do a search for "thinkverybig" and watch all of those videos. The one called "We Must Change" would be fitting to recite at Obama's Inauguration

I've seen your posts everywhere and wish you the best; HOWEVER, you should contact his Chicago office press secretary. No one connected to HuffPo can help you with this. Not even her highness herself.

Yeah, maybe they'll bump Maya Angelou so you can read your poem.

The election is over. Obama won. Try to get back to your life and let the man run the country.

Apparently, it's politics as usual...Obama could come and and help but fear of a loss making him 'look bad' prevents him from doing so...Doesn't sound like much has Change'd

Yeah, it's tough when you're the most beloved person in a nation, if not the world. Geez.

I think he can definitely help, I mean that candidate infomercial he did was just plain brilliant... Get the most famous man on the planet in the studio for a couple tapings and then send them down via care package with VP-elect Biden, former Pres Clinton... who is truly adored in Georgia as well, and Hillary. Hillary has a direct stake in this race, in that she has to put up with the ridiculous GOP wonks in the Senate, I would think she would enjoy the chance to thwart a few of them, especially someone as obnoxious as the likes of Saxby Chandliss.

But that being said, presidents are responsible for helping their party members forward and a taped or teleconferenced appearance is definitely in order. Aside from that, Obama needs to focus on keep our country from imploding before Jan 20th!!

So he is not in campaign mode anymore, whereas for McCain it doesn't matter." Moreover, if Obama were to show up and Martin lost, it could send a poor message."

But... Obama could go down and hold a few large rallies without actually "campaigning". He could give a completely bi-partisan speech on what we need to do together as a country. What his plans are, what he envisions for the future. He would not even have to mention Chambliss or the GOP at all.

Martin could start off with his stump speech first. Then have someone introduce Obama who would then give a non-partisan speech. Basically Obama would bring the crowd to Martin, without having to campaign for Martin directly.

Obama shouldm't risk his poltical capital by coming down here to campaign for Martin. First, Saxby has a good lead in the polls. Two, Jim Martin refused to endorse Obama until the Convention. Three, we have a corrupt secretary of state, Karen Handel, who won't count the votyes anyways.

I'm personally conflicted by the thought of President-elect Obama showing up to stump for the Democrat.

One one hand, he isn't President 'yet', and should use what resources he can bring to bear to up his chances of getting at least one more Senator on his side. You never know when one more vote from a friend that kind of owes you one might come in handy.

On the other hand, President-elect Obama has a lot of things on his plate already with transfer of power happening in only about 2 months. Should he spend a lot of time doing more campaigning? Should he try and look like he is at least somewhat above the fray?

I think Obama should do a bit of campaigning there, but not too much. However, see if he can send in Hillary & Bill Clinton on some junkets. See if he can talk Wesley Clark into a couple of tours of GA. Show up a couple of times with Mr. Martin though. Give the guy a big handshake and a smile,.. maybe toss some of Obama's remaining campaign war-chest (if legal) the guys direction.

All in all,... the time is probably well spent if he choses to do so.

Does Martin still need donations? or is it too late for that?
If he does need them, where do we send them?

Obama doesn't need to go himself, but he needs to send other top guns. Biden and Valerie Jarrett, John Lewis to the black churches.

I'd rather he fight to win this seat for the Dems than to give in to Lieberman's demands.

He sent his ground game to open offices throughout Georgia. As someone who volunteered for O let me tell you that ground game is fierce. Hillary is sufficient. Biden is VP-elect no way should he participate in this. Jarrett is a Chicago insider she has no weight or recognition throughout GA. John Lewis is a given.

He's not giving in to Lieberman's demands - he needs his vote and he needs Lieberman to be indebted to him. Period. This is politics, folks. Not a fairy tale. O knows exactly what to do and how to do it.
