***UPDATE*** 9:15PM Nov. 16 60 Minutes aired its interview tonight with Barack and Michelle Obama, they're first interview since Obama won the presidential election. In the interview, Obama repeated his commitment to close Guantanamo Bay and ban torture in order to "regain America's moral stature in the world." (Scroll down for video)

The interview covered many other topics, including national security, the financial crisis, Obama's thoughts on Lincoln and FDR, and an update on the new First Dog.

From AP:

President-elect Barack Obama said in an interview broadcast Sunday that since terrorists might try to attack the U.S. during the White House transition, selecting his national security team is one of his top priorities.

"I think it's important to get a national security team in place because transition periods are potentially times of vulnerability to a terrorist attack," Obama told CBS' "60 Minutes." "We want to make sure that there is as seamless a transition on national security as possible."

In his first television interview since his historic election, Obama said he has spent the days since the election on short- and long-term issues, from doing "whatever it takes" to stabilize the economy, restore consumer confidence and create jobs, to getting sound health care and energy policies through Congress. The president-elect also said that as soon as he takes office he will work with his security team and the military to draw down U.S. troops in Iraq, shore up Afghanistan and "stamp out al-Qaida once and for all."

Here's a clip from the interview in which Obama discusses what he's reading along with his thoughts on using Lincon and FDR as models:

More on Obama's interview from AP:

While investors are still riding a rollercoaster on Wall Street, Obama said the economy would have deteriorated even more without the $700 billion bank bailout. Re-regulation is a legislative priority, he said, not to crush "the entrepreneurial spirit and risk-taking of American capitalism" but to "restore a sense of balance."

"There's no doubt that we have not been able yet to reset the confidence in the financial markets and in the consumer markets and among businesses that allow the economy to move forward in a strong way," Obama said. "And my job as president is going to be to make sure that we restore that confidence."

He also said: "We shouldn't worry about the deficit next year or even the year after. ... The most important thing is that we avoid a deepening recession."

While "we have the tools," the president-elect said not enough has been done to address bank foreclosures and distressed homeowners.

"We've gotta set up a negotiation between banks and borrowers so that people can stay in their homes," Obama said. "That is going to have an impact on the economy as a whole. And, you know, one thing I'm determined is that if we don't have a clear, focused program for homeowners by the time I take office, we will after I take office."

Obama credited Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson for trying to remedy "an unprecedented crisis" the country hasn't seen since the Great Depression.

"Hank Paulson has worked tirelessly under some very difficult circumstances," Obama said. "And I think Hank would be the first one to acknowledge that probably not everything that's been done has worked the way he had hoped it would work."

A member of the transition team works with Paulson daily, Obama said, getting the needed background and sometimes offering approaches to address the economic meltdown.

The president-elect confirmed reports that he intends to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, and "make sure we don't torture" as "part and parcel of an effort to regain America's moral stature in the world."

Obama also said he plans to put al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in the crosshairs.

"I think capturing or killing bin Laden is a critical aspect of stamping out al-Qaida," Obama said. "He is not just a symbol, he's also the operational leader of an organization that is planning attacks against U.S. targets."

EARLIER: CBS's 60 Minutes will air the first televised interview with President-elect Barack Obama and his wife Michelle this Sunday.

Here's a preview, where the two describe the moment they knew that the Democratic ticket had prevailed on Election Day:

Asked when it sunk in that her husband had won, Michelle Obama told Kroft, "I remember, we were watching the returns and, on one of the stations, Barack's picture came up and it said, 'President-Elect Barack Obama.' And I looked at him and said, 'You are the 44th president of the United States of America. Wow. What a country we live in.'"

"How about that?" President-elect Obama added. "Yeah. And then she said, 'Are you going take the girls to school in the morning?'"

"I did not," Michelle Obama replied, laughing. "I didn't say that."

The interview will be broadcast on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

I liked the line, "Are you going to take the girls to school in the morning?" I bet he will miss that. I take my children to school, and I love it. Picking them up is even more fun. Most days they run to you to give you a hug, and it feels wonderful!

It has been few weeks now since Mr.Obama has been officially confirmed as the next POTUS. Although I celebrated this event with joy of witnessing the USA
getting back its true self , my first reaction has been a mix of restraint and expectations.

"What he is going to do? what he is going to say? What exciting and fresh he has in box".Nada.

So far I haven't seen or heard any thing different from the past decades.Realpolitik, already the usual recriminations of the hardcore Obama fans:
give him break he just arrived,no much he can do right now he doesn't have the executive powers yet, don't have too much expectations, let's keep it real one step at the time and on and on....

I can give him the benefit of doubt BUT allowing mediocracy from this man and his government,never.Ever. Too much at stake.
Mr.Obama will be more accountable than his contemporary predecessors. Why?

This man has been elected not only by liberal, women, minorities, white men and some republicans(they are not all evil) to bear high the beacon of the american dream.

Realpolitik doesn't work. It is the victory of the US people's will and aspirations to try "another way " to do things that won this election.

You were expecting him to heal the sick and turn water into wine? The man isn't even in office yet. Try waiting to see what he does before bashing him, otherwise none of us take you seriously...

I disagree with whoever says there's nothing new in Obama's approach to politics now that he's been elected.
Just look at the way he's going about gathering his future advisors, I can tell you it's not the good ol' way.
After the elections fireworks I can see how some people would get disappointed. But this is merely the intermission, during which the stage is set for second act, and from all I'm reading, the second act might well be worth seeing.

Re: Guantanamo

Let's review... we invaded and occupied a sovereign nation (no ties to 9/11), ignited an insurrection (anyone recall the colonial 'insurgents' acting up when England invaded us a while back?), rounded up insurgents, labeled them "terrorists", imprisoned them without due process and tortured some (to find out WHAT, exactly, with ANY conceivable bearing on U.S. national security?)

A measured, rational response to 19 religious zealots, NONE Iraqi -- controlled by a small handful of well-financed extremists, NONE Iraqi -- committing a horrific crime on U.S. soil? More like a PNAC riot.

The only bad thing about Bush and Cheney vacating Washington in January is that they won't be in restraints.

I loved how he talked about his old apartment being near Harolds Chicken Shack! Im from Chicago and I know what he's talking about! You can get fried chicken, white bread, hot sauce. Thats how we do it on the South Side. We have so many chain restaurants there. He's (Harolds) called "The Fried Chicken King." He's dressed up as a king carrying a axe while chasing a chicken. Thats what I love about them. They never forgot where the came from.

It's not so much hot sauce, but rather mild sauce. Yeah, I rep Chi-town too! And the south side!

How refreshing to see a well-spoken, thoughtful, insightful person as president. He makes SENSE when he talks. He clearly THINKS about the issue and can talk intelligently about it.
How different from the "word salad" we experienced so much with option #2!

Well I don't have time to read all the other posts (I love to when I can; most folks here so bright and witty!), but am I the only one who noticed last night that Mr. O obliquely referred to Naomi Klein's Shock Doctrine premise--I just about fell off of my chair! When speaking of gas prices, he said "First people go into shock...then they fall into trance..." Wahoo! Naomi when I saw her speak recently said she didn't know if he had read her book, but had seen a photo of him carrying it.
So the guy does read, and thinks. Now if he will just follow through and put in Treasury Dept folks who aren't hens guarding the henhouse. I can no longer find the petition on her site against the current favored picks...but if anyone knows, post it and everyone go sign it!

I president who reads... what a joy!
04:48 PM on 11/17/2008
Yeah!
When he talked about the books he's presently reading (when he's not reading briefing papers), I thought "Oh.My.God. We have a president that reads...and thinks!"
I think I spent the rest of the night smiling.
First, Harry Potter books got kids interested in books and reading. Now we have a cool president who plays pick-up basketball....AND READS.
This is a wonderful thing for both kids and adults.
Look over there! It's a tombstone.
The inscription reads: "Anti-Intellectualism 2000-2008 RIP"

My favorite part of the interview was when Michelle Obama told about their first date, when he picked her up in an old car that she could see the pavement through! Ohmigosh, could I relate to that!

I was just so glad to not be listening to a PE McCain first lady C.i.ndy, telling about THEIR first date: "well, Steve, it was just so cute--you know John was ma.r.r.ied, so I had my limo driver go pick John up at the ca.sin.no where he loved to gamble....from there he was brought in disguise to an undisclosed location.....so sweet....but, gosh, Steve, I am so worried about this country when we almost elected a ter.r.or.ist as Pres., and a guy we just don't KNOW!"

Two observations, after reading and blogging on the thread...

First, it's encouraging to see that most readers / posters are excited about a restoration of America's soul and a return to the principles that made it (until recently) the leader of the free world. The damage that the Bush administration has done can be hidden from the American public no longer.

Secondly, and sadly, it's obvious that h8tred di.es hard. It seems that the naysayers are consumed by it... either h8tred of liber.als, or mus.lims, or ar.ab people, or basic human rights. it's another sad legacy of the B ush administration - and its water carries on the right, as well as R.ove - that they relied on (and still do) the lowest and most divisive aspects of society to excuse their ab.uses.

Thankfully, the closure of the Guantanamo Bay prison will signal a renewal both at home and abroad...

Thought he could have talked a little more about healthcare since the Unhealthiest US Cities List came out today (kinda funny):
