Judith Miller Attends Screening Of Movie About Judith Miller
Greg Mitchell from Editor and Publisher attended a screening of the loosely-based-on L'Affaire du Valerie Plame flick Nothing But The Truth and got to enjoy the "bizarre experience" of sitting right behind former New York Times reporter Judith Miller herself as the story of her on-screen analogue, "Rachel Armstrong," -- played by British actress Kate Beckinsale -- unfurled on screen. Mitchell says the movie, directed by Rod Lurie, "makes a strong pitch for a federal shield law." We're guessing that it shies away from making a similar pitch for building the case for an illegal war on falsified evidence and losing your job over the ensuing epic fail, but hey, that's why they have sequels!
Mitchell describes the movie thusly:
Instead of a trumped-up invasion of Iraq (which Miller assisted) we have Venezuela getting unjustly blamed for aiding an assassination attempt on the U.S. president. The reporter breaks the Pulitzer-worth story, in the process exposing the CIA agent, while Miller never wrote about Plame. And Beckinsale is the sole recipient of the leaks -- there are no Matt Coopers, Bob Novaks, Bob Woodwards. The outed CIA agent's husband leaves her. There's no Scooter Libby character. No aspens turn. And so on. But the film never claims to be a true story of the actual episode.
He adds that "The film also features a surprise twist at the very end where the original source of the leak is revealed." I'm going to guess that it turns out that Dick Cheney can talk to dead people, because he is an undead ghoul who subsists on the tears of kittens. Which makes the ending a "confirmation," rather than a "twist."
Here's a clip from the movie, in which Miller/Armstrong's husband, played by David Schwimmer, is revealed to be cheating on Miller/Armstrong with some character played by Erin Dangler (What? Hope Davis wasn't available?), only to get guilted by Alan Alda. This sort of strains credulity, because while I would totally cheat on Judith Miller with Erin Dangler (or Hope Davis), I would not in any way risk an ongoing physical relationship with Kate Beckinsale, because God knows I'm not completely insane.
