WASHINGTON — Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman's chances of holding onto his committee chairmanship suffered a blow Friday when two key New England Democratic senators came out against him.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy and his Vermont colleague, Sen. Bernie Sanders, said Democrat-turned-independent Lieberman doesn't deserve to keep his Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs chairmanship because of his campaign attacks on President-elect Barack Obama.

Lieberman angered many Democrats by supporting Republican John McCain and criticizing Obama during the presidential contest.

Liberal activists are urging the party's caucus to strip Lieberman's chairmanship when caucus members meet next week. Senate Democrats are scheduled to meet next Tuesday to decide what to do.

"I am one who does not feel that somebody should be rewarded with a major chairmanship after doing what he did," Leahy, D-Vt., said in a Vermont Public Radio interview on Friday. "I never ask people, well you must vote for this person or that person. Everybody has to make up their mind."

Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, said he hopes Lieberman will remain in the party caucus and work to regain the trust of those he has disappointed.

"To reward Senator Lieberman with a major committee chairmanship would be a slap in the face of millions of Americans who worked tirelessly for Barack Obama and who want to see real change in our country," Sanders said in a statement. "Appointing someone to a major post who led the opposition to everything we are fighting for is not 'change we can believe in.'"

The issue of whether to punish Lieberman is a sensitive one for Democrats, given Obama's calls for bipartisanship during the 2008 race. Lesser penalties are also being considered involving Lieberman's committee and subcommittee posts.

Some of Lieberman's attacks on Obama "went beyond the pale," Leahy said.

"I would feel that had I done something similar that I would not be chairman of Senate Judiciary Committee in the next Congress," Leahy said.

Lieberman, who was Democrat Al Gore's running mate in 2000, was re-elected in 2006 as an independent after losing his state's Democratic primary. He remains a registered Democrat and aligns himself with Senate Democrats.

Obama has told Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada it would hurt the message of unity that he wants for his new administration if Lieberman leaves the Democratic caucus. Reid met with Lieberman last week and was initially inclined to strip him of the Homeland Security Committee chairmanship, according to a leadership aide.

Since then Reid has been working to find a compromise with Democratic supporters of Lieberman, including Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee. Dodd and Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., have said it would be a mistake if any punishment by the party causes Lieberman to bolt to the Republican side.

Lieberman also spoke last week with Republican Leader Mitch McConnell. Key Republicans, including Sens. John Ensign of Nevada and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, have said they would welcome Lieberman to the GOP caucus.

Lieberman's presence in the Democratic caucus was essential to the party's control of the Senate because he gave them a 51-49 edge over Republicans. But Democrats expanded their majority in the Nov. 4 elections and won't need Lieberman to control the chamber when the new Congress convenes.

(Angelina) Joe Lie spits them in the face and they welcome him back with open arms. At least Catholics are ordered to say a prayer or two for penance. He, on the other hand, gets off scot free. Be a man. Own up to your shortcomings. Give up the Homeland Security chairmanship.

Strip him of the committee chairmanship, as he's already proven he cannot be trusted to implement the message given by the people on November 4.

IF he chooses to caucus with the Republicans, well, that would be the GOP loss, since we already know he can't be trusted, and it's only going to be a matter of time before he turns on them as well.

The Democratic party back in Connecticut rejected him as candidate back in 2006, and he won this seat as an independent. Unfortunately, the Congress is likely stuck with him until the 2012 elections, when, whether a so-called "independent" or as a Republican, he will be forcibly retired.

That is of course unless he shows something that we haven't seen before: respect for the electorate which has mostly repudiated him. Retiring now would be a class act, in the manner of his old friend John McCain, who despite everything his handlers attempted to make of him, is now, and far too late, FINALLY starting to show again the basic decency which endeared him to America, once upon a time.

I'm not sure whether Senator Lieberman actually has that decency, but if John McCain can pretend--ultimately unsuccessfully--to be a skunk, perhaps Senator L can pretend to integrity.

All through the campaign just concluded I kept asking myself, That is the guy who ran with Gore
in 2000? Was Lieberman like that then? One would suppose so. Lieberman was running with
his own best interests as he saw them, in 2000 and 2008. He has been rogue for some time --
and now is the time that he should leave his old party. I would enjoy seeing Rahm Emanuel do
as he did famously or perhaps infamously after the 1996 elections, when he read the names of
Clinton "enemies" who'd lost and he stuck a steak knife in the table for each and said, "DEAD!"
Joe, I wish we could say it weren't so in your case, but watch the necktie.

I agree... I never understood the wisdom behind such a statement and your response is absolutely correct. In truth, all your enemy needs is a moment of weakness [real or perceived] to show their true colors. Do you really want them sitting in the chair next to you when it happens? I'm thinking "NOT". Then again, it worked in the Godfather... "right"!?!

*Deep sigh*

Sounds good on paper but might not always turn out to be the wisest choice to make.

I was sort of liking what Obama was saying when he said that he wanted Liebermen to keep his seat, after all he's an independent and should be able to fall easier to either side of the isle. But here's the thing both Sanders and Leahy are my senators. These guys are great senators, and if they say Lieberman should lose his seat than he should lose his seat. I trust those guys!

They're not my senators, but I'm with them on this, too. If President-Elect Obama and other Dems want to forgive him his treachery, that's admirable. Let it be Lieberman's choice whether or not he wants to remain in the Democratic caucus, but he should certainly be stripped of his committee chairs. Anyone who believes ol' Joe will vote with the Dems to break a filibuster is mistaken.

Lieberman. Powell. Can you truly applaud one going over to the other side, and yet be angry at the other for doing the same, and call your thoughts on this fair and worthy of the morals we should have within our Republic?

Powell did not go out of his way to denigrate McCain while endorsing Obama, nor does he hold any elective office or chairpersonship. Comparing him to Lieberman is apples to oranges.

Powell endorsed Obama. He did not actively campaign for Obama. Powell spoke respectfully of McCain even while disagreeing with him. Powell did not try to furtively undermine McCain and spread lies.. Powell did not slander McCain. Lieberman did all those despicable things to Obama.
`Traitor Joe' must go....

what's going on behind the scenes must be very interesting... on the face of it all, it appears that reid, leahy and sanders disagree with obama's opinion of rapidly growing bipartisanship for this incoming administration. this is all the more curious and fascinating when taken into context with the sharp words obama spoke with lieberman while the campaigns were ongoing. this is a clear sign that the obama administration is willing to mend fences and build confidence among both sides of the aisle, which could be a positive step toward repairing the severe damage wrought by the train wreck bush "administration" over the last eight long years. or, to put it bluntly, lieberman will be expected to yield his debt of gratitude to the forgiving obama presidency by voting with the democrats, and in return getting to keep his coveted chairmanship. further recent evidence of this obama relationship building is now seen with mccain and hillary and bill clinton. however, i still feel very strongly that the inclusion of democrats and republicans who are complicit with the Bush "administration's" 8-year long abrogation of the u.s. constitution, does not truly represent real change. regardless, the pressure which reid must be receiving from the obama transition team to come to an agreement with "benedict lieberman" must be intense, and i would love to be a fly on the wall to these negotiations.

I've got a better idea. Abolish the worthless "Homeland Security" department, and there would be no need for the Committee! The (swearword) department has caused more problems to the citizens than it is worth. It was created as a reaction to 9/11, and has caused nothing but inconvenience since. Example; have you flown anywhere lately? Did you try to take a bottle of water along?

JOE might have voted his conscience but he campaigned for MCCAIN without one!! and i'd say he did it with the power of knowing/thinking that the DEMS would do nada!!! show his butt the door!!! let him feel the power of his vote and the DEMS wrath!!! and if his vote ends up belonging to the repugs then it is where it belongs!

Leahy and Sanders are right. Lieberman should not be rewarded with the chairmanship of a committee. Lieberman's party lost, so Lieberman should step down. Lieberman campaigned for the status quo and the status quo lost. Lieberman is blocking progress and change and he should be moved out of the way. Since he's not going willingly, as a decent, moral person would, he needs to be forcibly removed. We don't have time to waste on a fool like Lieberman.

Yes! The first commandment of the Democratic Party is thou shalt not speaketh ill of a fellow Democrat. So...Go Lieberman and take Hillary with you. There are ways to act during a political campaign, and ways NOT to act. Both Lieberman and Clinton chose the latter and they should be summarily dismissed from the whole damn Democratic Party for conduct unbecoming. If for no other reason than as a warning to others.

I can understand unity, but to keep a guy that goes against your goal and the methods to achive that goal is not work having. I understand President-Elect Obama quest for unity, but he is not worth it. Even if we consider him when we where 51-49, him speaking at the Republican Convention did it for me

No chairmanships for backfaced Joe. He needs to go to the bottom of the line. He must be removed from his committee. Then let him resign and let the CT governor appoint another Republican. He's loathesome.

How will Lieberman help the Democrats anyway? If he stays, he won't vote with them, and if if he goes, it won't really be that big of a loss.
