Obama, Spending Time With Family, Tries To Maintain Routine

New York Times:

CHICAGO -- A couple of weeks ago, Barack Obama headed to the Hyde Park Hair Salon for a trim. He greeted the staff and other customers and plopped down in the same chair in front of the same barber who has cut his hair for the last 14 years.

But when he wanted a trim this week, the Secret Service took one look at the shop's large plate-glass windows and the gawking tourists eager for a glimpse of the president-elect and the plan quickly changed. If Mr. Obama could no longer come to the barber, the barber would come to him and cut his hair at a friend's apartment.

The Secret Service detail that covers Barack and his family must be overjoyed. They are dealing with lovely and interesting people who happen to live in the great city of Chicago. What a contrast this must be to the job of protecting the current occupants of the WH--especially whilst in Crawford.

I love it! The man gets $21 haircuts! My trips to the hairdresser cost me close to $200. What terrific people they are, the Obama family. They buy their clothes at Gap and J. Crew, their kid stuff at Target, get their hair done by the local barber/hairdresser and spend about what most middle-class families do on their stuff. OK, their house is outside of my price range, but it was bought with the earnings from the two books the Senator wrote, and it's a FAR CRY from the multimillion dollar McCain homes (seven? Ten?) or just about any celebrity home. I'm sure Oprah Winfrey's house(s) cost at least five to ten times more.

What a a huge sacrifice the entire obama family is making! Yet, as mentioned in the article, I wouldn't necessarily agree that 'it's the price for fame' -rather, I see this as a true sacrifice from a man with a sincere vision to change the world! Not self-serving-ego driven...but true, self-sacrificing service to humanity. So rare for a political figure!

I agree - he has had to give up a lot of little things that matter to him a great deal. It is a sacrifice. He can't walk around in his neighborhood, take his girls to school without elaborate preparations or just hang out the way he used to.
Hope the family makes a smooth transition to Washington as they have been based in chicago and all their friends are there.

I'm sure it's a huge sacrifice for any family. Nixon would always ask Pat and the girl's permission before starting another campaign.

It certainly seems like a bigger intrusion of privacy than I'd ever be comfortable with. Like being a mega-star, but with actual responsibility to boot!
