On Friday, political chatter focused around reports that President-elect Barack Obama is thinking about naming Sen. Hillary Clinton as his Secretary of State.

But while much of the talk focused on Obama's reasoning, Clinton has a few decisions to make herself. The New York Democrat is likely already running through a series of calculations, according to two members of the Clinton inner circle who spoke to the Huffington Post.

"She has a passionate network of supporters who are devoted to her. Is she going to shut all of that off? Because once you become a Secretary of State, you don't fundraise," one former aide to Clinton's presidential campaign said. "What happens with your political staff? You're really kind of upending a lot of stuff. It's a huge life change."

The aide noted that while the Senator began her campaign with only a couple-hundred thousand email addresses in her database, she now has "at least three to five million." Indeed, even as her name was being discussed non-stop on cable news channels, Clinton's political action committee sent out a fundraising pitch Friday on behalf of Al Franken, who is still locked in an extended battle with Norm Coleman over a Senate seat in Minnesota.

Among other dilemmas facing Clinton, according to the campaign aide -- who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the situation -- is whether the Secretary of State's role in an Obama administration would be diminished by the large role in foreign affairs that will likely be played by Vice President-elect Joe Biden. In addition, there is the question of whether or not Clinton will want to give up a safe Senate seat for life for a job from which she could be summarily fired without notice.

"Cabinet members serve at the pleasure of the president," the aide said. "Does she want to go from being a First Lady to a major Senator and someone with a big presidential candidacy to someone who could just be fired one day? I don't know."

There are also complicating factors brought to the decision making process by former President Clinton. They include whether or not to reveal donors to his presidential library to the Obama vetting team and the possibility that his international work with the Clinton Global Initiative could conflict with Foggy Bottom's priorities. The campaign aide said that while the Clintons were prepared to submit donor lists to Obama for the vice presidential vetting (which never came), it's an open question as to whether they would similarly eager to do so for the Secretary of State position.

Also unclear is the fate of Hillary Clinton's remaining debt from the presidential campaign, were she to take the post. Would Obama have to commit to putting his own email list to work for Clinton, effectively taking responsibility for that fundraising work while she puts in effort for his administration? On this score, aides were mum.

While agreeing with some of the concerns raised by the campaign aide, a different longtime assistant to Sen. Clinton -- going back to her days as first lady -- said there are nevertheless some strong reasons why Obama might be inclined to make the post worth Clinton's time.

"She is a beloved figure around the world. She has visited over 80 countries, as first lady and senator together," the assistant said. Noting in particular the fact that she learned as first lady how to be effective as a "backdoor diplomat," the former White House assistant said Sen. Clinton actually mastered "a lot of the intricacies of these issues before ever joining the Senate's Armed Services committee. She's tough; she had meetings with some Prime Ministers and Presidents where she had to deliver some blunt messages for us."

And there is one other symbolic reason why Obama might go the extra mile to convince Clinton to come on board, the former assistant said. "He would be choosing a very high ranking woman to be one of the faces of this country all over the world. This is the first woman's name that has come up, by the way, for one of the top four cabinet posts. So she gives him this great political asset. And she and Biden are really tight. So I wouldn't be at all surprised if Obama offered it to her."

If he does, we'll see if Hillary is interested.

Senator Clinton has both the temperment and the smarts -- as well, of course, as a wealth of experience to be a GREAT Secretary of State. She already has excellent entre and a cache of good will around the globe that shall serve well the new President as he seeks to rebuild international esteem for our country.

If you have paid attention to the nuances related to the transition, our new President wants a cabinet of intellectual heavy weights, accomplished Americans who are capable of providing solid advice and counsel -- no sycophants need apply.

Senator Clinton is the right choice for this critically important job.

"This whole thing is a fairy tale"! This article floats a myth. Hillary's 5 million database of supporters will not automatically be void and lost in cyberspace, as soon as she assumes Sec of State for a bit. In fact, it will grow even further to include anyone and everyone who has any ideological and/or financial interests in the US and foreign "war machinery," "free trade," or "big oil, " along with further Corporatization of Governments worldwide. Let's not forget the glimpses we got into the Clinton mindset that we got during the primaries, just because she pushed for an Obama victory... purely out of Self interest -- during the last two months of the general campaign.

As for Obama, I thought he wanted to "heal" the cynicism" and "backroom dealings" in US politics!!!!

The real question should be, do we want her if she and her husband can't come clean in 24 hours? If they can't and don't, the answer should be, "no."

Yes, "The Court " Rules, and at "State". HRC would be bored in two weeks!. I'm thinking of candidates who HAVE Judged and were bored. " State" needs a person who will select unders' who understand the object is largely a question of learning the rules" it "obeys rather than grasping its international essence, the distiniction between technical fluency and domestic/International understanding is less clear-cut then HRC has imagine's or concidered in her thinking today. It is so shocking to even hear Bill Richardson mentioned as a possibility for SOS. He is incapable of so high a position. He is incapable of even delivering a matter of fact speech as we saw on the debates. John Kerry is about the same. Look again. There must be someone better out there. Hillary should probably keep her senate seat. it would be to her advantage.

I find it interesting that everyone is coming down on Sarah Palin for perpetuating the William Ayers link to Mr. Obama when in fact it was Hillary Clinton who started that mess.

I suppose Mr. Obama certainly wants to keep his REAL enemies as close as possible, eh?

DrPneyumann: Perhaps Hillary did start it, I dont know, but I do know Palin continues to stir the pot. Palin is 'a beauty queen' with a low mentality.

Dr. I 'm not sure its as much an "enemy" as much as a study in her "alter ego" . The last thing I wish to see seated in the Oval with our President is a like-minded campaigner. We might be better served with those who practice basic math instead of trigonometry ,raising powers or calculus. The "Human" in the Condition" is not the same math equation as "The Human Condition", which is what the US State Department is mostly focused on as a mission. Thank you.

This meeting could very well have simply been a courtesy on the part of Obama. No one knows for sure if she was actually offered the job. Bill is an impediment to any position for Hillary. Let's just wait and see.

I think that Mr Robertson would be awesome, and for Hillary to remain in the Senate, to keep in the Washington flow in order to gain more experience for her drive to PRESIDENT of the United States of America following Obama in 2017! What a power player she would be!!!!

Why does she need to gain more experience? You don't need any experience to be President...or haven't you noticed?

Let's finally put to rest this mythology spread by repetition that HRC is more "experienced" to be President than the best of them. She is as much "experienced as many a women who have lent spousal support backing powerful men and many a wives of ordinary men who continue to nurture social causes in quiet selfless corners of the world. And certainly there are many more Congress members who got elected without the pomp of high level connections and the $$$ that follow them; many of whom have served for more than the 8 years.

Further, there is a critical difference between spending a lifetime in a political limelight vs. the "experience" of literally walking the walk through "main street." Obama earned a real-life "experience" going up each rung where government actually impacts the people it seeks to serve. Perhaps like Palin, Clinton needs that kind of "experience" before they can both be "fast tracked" by pure celebrity.

Moreover, HRC lacks the innate wisdom that comes from a quiet accumulation of depth and breadth of knowledge, a lifetime spent on extensively debating opposing viewpoints, beyond stage lights, circumspect observation accumulated as an outsider, and the kind of discernment that renders discrimination a virtue. These are the attributes that allowed Obama to develop a truly centrist mindset -- a nationalist pragmatism married to a progressive humanism Naturally, people from literally "all walks of life" in America and all corners of the globe saw their HOPES pinned on Obama's lapel.

You have to wonder after having a young president if America would turn to an elderly Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Out of all the cabinet positions, Secretary of State seems the most important and intriguing. I'm gonna throw my hat in the ring for it. I'm very cosmopolitan, I'm not a hawk and I've got excellent people skills.

Think it'll fly? I could use the frequent flyer miles.

For me it's all about smart. I'm a Obama supporter, but not a Hillary hater. Change means different things to many people. For me it's about a government with intellect, will, and ideals. I was 14 when JFK died. 19 when RFK died. Gave up on the idea of a pragmatic, ideals driven White House. Got a little solace from watching "The West Wing" and the Bartlett administration. But not in real life.

The Secretary of State no matter how much he or she may disagree, ultimately does what the President wants, or resigns. We saw that with Colin Powell and Dubya. I don't know how things are going to work out under an Obama administration, but I know it will be an intelligent, pragmatic, and humanistic one--whomever he choses to work with him on his agenda. That would be a great and positive change.

Whatever I thought of Senator Clinton's campaign, I didn't doubt her and her husband's sincere desire to improve the lives of working people. Bill almost pulled off a peace agreement between Israel and the PLO, and is immensely popular in all the global capitals. That's an invaluable foreign policy resource. Senator Clinton is an enormous intellect, and committed public servant. I'm sure a lot of thought has gone into this, and President-elect Obama wouldn't even be considering her (from all angles) if he wasn't convinced of that. If he chooses her, I'm cool.

I don't like saying this but I really think we need to have a male secretary of state because there are too many heads of state in the Middle East who don't believe in or deal with women in professional positions, much less positions of authority. I don't know how much of the lack of progress there has been because Condi's representing Dubyah and how much may be because the guys she is meeting with don't take her seriously, but I do suspect it's a problem.

I like either Bill Richardson or John Kerry for State (not that anyone's asking me!)

I would have thought HHS would have been more in Hillary's powerhouse, also. If she wants a Cabinet position.

Should we make a law to this effect? You know, to make sure women in America never become TOO powerful? To replace the glass ceiling in the line of succession with bullet-proof glass, forever a barrier between Speaker of the House and Vice-President?

The idea that we shouldn't allow a woman to have a job because certain cultures don't accept a woman's presence in politics or professional life is a sad one. Different cultures do different things, and just as we are accepting of Middle Eastern traditions, many of them (esecially those that the SoS would deal with) are accepting of ours. Keep in mind that Iranian women have been in high government positions in the Islamic Republic of Iran. How about Pakistan? Benazir Bhutto comes to mind.

Is your next argument going to be that we also couldn't accomplish as much under Bush because his secretaries of state were both African-American? Is that what hurt our place in the world?

Times are changing. Change is here. Embrace it, don't drag your heels.

"Secretary Of State: Would Hillary Want The Job?"

Well, I personally hope NOT! I have my gut concerns about Hillary being the SoS, not to mention having her back in the White House with Bill tagging along. I still have this foreboding feeling that she may either try to undermine Obama in some way or would not play along well as a subordinate for Obama. Sorry, I know there are loyal Clinton supporters who don't want to hear this from me. I am hoping Obama is only being politically and publicly polite for asking Hillary, even though she may not even want the job.

I am truly hoping that Bill Richardson is selected for the post.

Please, can we never mention Nader's name again in terms of service to this country, elected or otherwise. He has shown, most recently by his "Uncle Tom" interview, that he is unfit for duty.

I have run out of words to express my dislike of this person. he has no clue about how to actually get anything done, let alone be diplomatic. Horrendous even to mention hisname in te same breath as SOS.
