On Friday, political chatter focused around reports that President-elect Barack Obama is thinking about naming Sen. Hillary Clinton as his Secretary of State.

But while much of the talk focused on Obama's reasoning, Clinton has a few decisions to make herself. The New York Democrat is likely already running through a series of calculations, according to two members of the Clinton inner circle who spoke to the Huffington Post.

"She has a passionate network of supporters who are devoted to her. Is she going to shut all of that off? Because once you become a Secretary of State, you don't fundraise," one former aide to Clinton's presidential campaign said. "What happens with your political staff? You're really kind of upending a lot of stuff. It's a huge life change."

The aide noted that while the Senator began her campaign with only a couple-hundred thousand email addresses in her database, she now has "at least three to five million." Indeed, even as her name was being discussed non-stop on cable news channels, Clinton's political action committee sent out a fundraising pitch Friday on behalf of Al Franken, who is still locked in an extended battle with Norm Coleman over a Senate seat in Minnesota.

Among other dilemmas facing Clinton, according to the campaign aide -- who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the situation -- is whether the Secretary of State's role in an Obama administration would be diminished by the large role in foreign affairs that will likely be played by Vice President-elect Joe Biden. In addition, there is the question of whether or not Clinton will want to give up a safe Senate seat for life for a job from which she could be summarily fired without notice.

"Cabinet members serve at the pleasure of the president," the aide said. "Does she want to go from being a First Lady to a major Senator and someone with a big presidential candidacy to someone who could just be fired one day? I don't know."

There are also complicating factors brought to the decision making process by former President Clinton. They include whether or not to reveal donors to his presidential library to the Obama vetting team and the possibility that his international work with the Clinton Global Initiative could conflict with Foggy Bottom's priorities. The campaign aide said that while the Clintons were prepared to submit donor lists to Obama for the vice presidential vetting (which never came), it's an open question as to whether they would similarly eager to do so for the Secretary of State position.

Also unclear is the fate of Hillary Clinton's remaining debt from the presidential campaign, were she to take the post. Would Obama have to commit to putting his own email list to work for Clinton, effectively taking responsibility for that fundraising work while she puts in effort for his administration? On this score, aides were mum.

While agreeing with some of the concerns raised by the campaign aide, a different longtime assistant to Sen. Clinton -- going back to her days as first lady -- said there are nevertheless some strong reasons why Obama might be inclined to make the post worth Clinton's time.

"She is a beloved figure around the world. She has visited over 80 countries, as first lady and senator together," the assistant said. Noting in particular the fact that she learned as first lady how to be effective as a "backdoor diplomat," the former White House assistant said Sen. Clinton actually mastered "a lot of the intricacies of these issues before ever joining the Senate's Armed Services committee. She's tough; she had meetings with some Prime Ministers and Presidents where she had to deliver some blunt messages for us."

And there is one other symbolic reason why Obama might go the extra mile to convince Clinton to come on board, the former assistant said. "He would be choosing a very high ranking woman to be one of the faces of this country all over the world. This is the first woman's name that has come up, by the way, for one of the top four cabinet posts. So she gives him this great political asset. And she and Biden are really tight. So I wouldn't be at all surprised if Obama offered it to her."

If he does, we'll see if Hillary is interested.

I think she is qualified to do the job, but.......something doesn't look right in this picture. Why are there so many leaks on this. MSNBC and CNN as well as George Stephanopolous are all claiming the scoop. The Obama transition operation is leaking like a sieve when his campaign operation was so airtight.

I still think Bill Richardson will ultimately be the choice. He has been a cabinet member and ambassador to the United Nations as well as U.S. negotiator in the Middle East and Africa.

The more I think about it, the more I like Hillary as Sec. of State. Obama-Biden-Hillary is a power packed team with brains and worldwide appeal. Moreover, they are brighter by far than the chatter class who cannot see how three bright people might actually work together intelligently and effectively. Looks like a seamless trinity to me.

I would really like to see Kerry in this role. Its to much power for Clinton. Her ego will get in the way. She's shown this over and over and over.

Kerry doesn't bring anything to this position. He is more of a YAWN!

Kesiac: SofS is part of the executive branch and serves at the discretion of the President and the power that comes with it....is that of the office of the President's....not the person who is Secretary of State.

An appointed position only gives you as much power as the person who appointed you wants to give to you, and again, that power belongs to them...not you. He who giveth, can taketh.

That is the problem . Obama does not have to spine to fire her for fear of losing the women's vote.

I understand what you are saying. But I think Hill is an opportunist. I do like her fight, and her fire, and if not for her personal charachter flaws, I think shed be great. But I think she will take advantage of this position and the power that it holds. She would bring to much drama.

I hope Hillary stays in the Senate.

I'm sure Obama is more magnanimous than me, but it's hard to forget 'And the skies will open up...". Mud slinging and fear mongering is bad enough, but being sarcastic about a whole movement's spirit is as low as it gets.

Get over it. It was a campaign, and she made him a stronger candidate against McCain. Politics are hardball and you can't go whining every time somebody lobs a criticism at Barack. He doesn't whine, why should his supporters?

Hillary has zero seniority in the Senate to become majority leader.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:17 PM on 11/14/2008

Agreed, Hillary is a junior Senator still. Senate Majority Leader is best left to the politicians who have been there so long that according to Obama they "have become corrupted by the politics of Washinton."

Secretary of Energy is going to be a huge position in this administration. The whole aim of this admin is to overhaul our energy system to become "energy independent". We will need someone with Bill Richardson's background to fill this role. He has already held this office, and so has the experience, but this time it will be much more challenging than it was under Clinton. It is the cornerstone of our future.

Plus Richardson has the diplomatic skills and contacts to be able to deal with the current energy countries in the MidEast and in Central America that we will need to work with to get us through in the meantime.

We need Bill Richardson as Secretary of Energy.

Well I was the one who always stated Hillary would be a good Sec. of state, that was before Biden, I'm not feeling a good match with Obama, Biden and Clinton. I think Richardson has given his all and deserves something. But again, Obama is (9, 6, 1) truth to his type form The Peacemaker, this isn't a surprise to me at all! Welcome to the world of peacemaker, politics folks!

hahahaha, thats funny i used to hate seeing anything political or speaking of it, but the last 8 years got me really wondering and i saw it!!! thats why i don't go to church anymore! all they teach now is fear and hate which is totally false. yes its call the ultra-right wing christian extremist that has now fueled the polital arena that are just like the al-quaida or the taliban. mind myself i stay home read the true scriptures of the Bible, obama says himself he's not the messiah, that right there he's not, but the one true anti-christ will come after obama!

[Richardson has given his all and deserves something]

I don't want to see appointees based on what they "deserve", but based on MERIT! That is exactly what is most wrong about the GOP machine: they reward loyalty over competence.

I think Richardson would be a better choice than Hillary, but let's not give that type of reason for it.

Richardson turned on the Clintons and he will turn on Obama, he has no sense of loyalty.

I can see him on the news now...".President Obama is still mad at me and....blah, blah, blah"

The last thing Obama needs now is to deal with a turncoat like Richardson.

The more I see of this administration as it shapes up, maybe there was good cause why these people have been denied "full controll" [sic] before. The fewer of the Clinton has-beens they choose ---and that includes Hillary herself and certainly the odious Bill--- the better for the country.

I happen to think that Hillary and health care are a perfect fit. Unfortunately, because of her lack of seniority in the Senate she wouldn't be in a position to assume a leading role in health-care reform.

OOPS. Keith Olbermann has said the unspeakable. Hillary's nomination would need to be vetted against Bill Clintons selling of influence to foreign governments. This will ether never happen or reveal deep conflicts for Hillary.

Obama knew about the Bill factor in advance but it appears he's offered Hillary SoS in spite of it.

Let's hope he offered it because he knew that if she accepts, it will reveal enough about her and her husband and their slippery dealings with foreign governments to keep her from ever contemplating a run for the Presidency again. Lord, let it be so.

Selling of influence to foreign governments? How can he do that if his wife, and means of "influence" serves at the discretion of President Obama and is an agent of his policy? Really, do you think that a former President, would really stoop to tha...t for what? Money? Do you really think some Foreign Leader will say "gee, let's bribe Bill, to get to Hillary, to get to Obama?"
