PARIS — U.S. actress Lindsay Lohan has been pelted with a flour bomb on arrival at a Paris nightclub wearing a fur stole.

Animal rights activists showered the 22-year-old actress with flour when she went to the VIP Room Theater in the early hours of Saturday with her friend, disc jockey Samantha Ronson.

The owner of the nightclub helped Lohan dust off her blue sequined dress and black stole before she posed on the red carpet. Ronson went on to spin tracks for a crowd that included reggae rapper Shaggy and "I Kissed a Girl" singer Katy Perry.

FLOUR B.OMB SONG

A hundred million animals
A hundred million animals are sl.aughtered every year
And those who say they don't agree
Are those who do not hear or see.
A hundred million animals
A hundred million animals are sl.aughtered every year.

My father says that humans keep k.illing,
Their w.ounds keep bl.eeding too.
My father says he doesn't know why,
But somehow or other they do.
--They do! somehow or other they do.--

The Republican Party is waiting for most of your anthropocentrists to join it. If any of you who say your against for but think PETA goes too far, then you really have never seen even a picture of a live mink being skinned. IGNORANT

Personally, I think people who wear mink (or any other animal skins) ought to have worse than flour thrown at them....

How do they know the fur is real?
How do they know the activists are real?
How do they know who the activists are?
People shouldn't be attacked for wearing animal products. Find a different way to stop the wearing of animal products which should stop the purchasing of animal products which should stop the harvesting of animal products, which will stop the attack of people that wear animal products.

Animals shouldn't be anally electrocuted and skinned alive because fur hags think stoles are cute. How about everyone wears their own skin?

Although an.al electrocution does have a certain appeal for some human beings I can think of (who shall remain nameless...)

If you are the type of person that would press assault charges for having flour thrown on you, you shouldn't be allowed out in public.

There is an article on the front page of nytimes.com right now that talks about all the horrific things being done to human beings in the Congo in the pursuit of tin, which is then used to make cell phones and laptops. Are we to start throwing flour at anyone talking on a cell phone? Sorry if that's anthropocentric of me. But I am, after all, a human.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:16 PM on 11/15/2008

Mojodaddy, your point is good and well demonstrates the philosophical nature of these discussions.

My answer to your questions is that, yes in an ideal world we should be (metaphorically) throwing flour at cell-phone users. But it is a very imperfect world that we live in, and as individuals it is very difficult to tackle outrages like this. That is why people who want to get involved take personal action where they can, boycott products and look to groups willing to take action and mobilize others into action. The reporters for the NYT do an important service in highlighting this issue and hopefully it will have an impact.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:33 PM on 11/15/2008

Then do we have to throw flour at ourselves ???

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:50 PM on 11/15/2008

Fair enough, and if someone is moved by a particular outrage and chooses to become involved in some way, then that's all good. Often, however, one gets the sense that certain of these folks seem to be passing judgment on others, people who perhaps are moved by different outrages, or who choose to become involved in other ways. They are called "anthropocentric" or accused of having no souls, or are equated with Republicans. Which of course, just makes these folks seem unserious and demagogic and, frankly, a bit Palinesque.

We would have to boycott tin altogether. I'm not at all averse to that idea, although it sounds difficult. We'd first need to make up a list of products that use tin, and then boycott ALL of them. One problem with boycotts like this, though, is that it hurts the workers, even exploited workers, worse than it hurts the corporations that employ them.

In the case of furs, the "workers" are the people who actually kill and sell the animals, so I am not at all averse to "hurting" them.

A final word on tactics. I am not sure about violent tactics or where to draw the line. Flour-bombs seem harmless enough, though, and do make the point. Setting fire to SUVs not so much.

Saying a person has to be a vegan in order to object to fur, is like saying a person has to be a virgin in order to promote responsible sex education.
One need not be "perfect" to stop suffering of others.

Then where do you draw the line, woody? How much exploitation of animals is OK? Just enough to satisfy your hunger and no more? Methinks that if you're so much of a fanatic in this area that you will assault other people, you had better be walking the walk yourself on a very fine line.

Nope, it's just part of life that people will disagree with your strategy. There are much more productive ways to help animals and you know it... Whether or not your willing to admit it is an entirely different thing.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:37 PM on 11/15/2008

There are blogs like this today all over the internet debating this issue--which, by the way, is much bigger than just whether or not it was OK to throw flour at Lohan. I actuallyt doubt that there are much more productive ways than this of getting the conversation going. Education and outreach cost $, a bag of flour is cheap.

You may not agree with it, but it works and that's why activists do this stuff.
