Diane Sawyer Lands Ashley Dupre, Eliot Spitzer's Hooker

Ashley Dupre, Eliot Spitzer's paid-for paramour, has spilled her guts to ABC News' Diane Sawyer.

But she didn't exactly tell all.

Sawyer interviewed the New Jersey runaway who became a high-priced hooker, it was confirmed Friday - but it's unlikely there will be any details about her dalliance with the former governor.

"People who think this is all about Eliot Spitzer are going to be disapointed," an insider said. "Diane has done extensive reporting on prostitution. This is another chapter in that reporting."

I wish I had my own news program. Then, I could interview drug dealers and give them their moment in the spotlight. Maybe, a mugger or two - since engaging in criminal activities is all you need to do to get interviewed on major "news" networks.

Thanks, Miss Sawyer. You, and ABC, have managed to put into one simple phrase why I left journalism: I couldn't deal with the fact that the hooker was the story.

Never mind Eliot Spitzer's record as AG or Governor, never mind his family, never mind Miss Dupre's family, never mind that there were no actual laws broken (well, important ones like defrauding insurance clients or bank customers). The hooker was the story.

Aside from prurient curiosity what could be gained from an interview of this sort? Isn 't it sad enough that so much wreckage occurred as a result of Spitzer's liaison with Dupre that we need to go through the muck one more time????? Could someone do an interview that inspires or educates. Could someone do something more responsible than engaging with a hooker on national television talking about something we want to forget????

It's interesting that the real story with Spitzer got buried in the sex scandal. That is that he was fighting risky loan practices on the state level and was seeking to curb subprimes through state legislation. He had uncovered the yawning maw that would become the financial meltdown. Bet you won't see that on ABC. Way to go-real investigative reporting going on for all the money that these spokesmodels make. Who are the real hookers.

A name or a label defines and simplifies one's complete character. The family of Ashley Dupre don't call her "our hooker". We may question the wisdom of this interview, but we don't know the full spectrum of the qualities and aspirations of any man or woman. They deserve no labels, but respect and inspiration to become better human beings. We all need that!
