This undated file photo provided by Gary and Alina Grewal of Hardwick Township, N.J., shows a charred cross that had been burned on the lawn of their home. The Grewals placed a banner congratulating President-elect Barack Obama on his election victory in their yard and found the banner wrapped around the charred cross Nov. 6, 2008. Lt. Gerald Lewis of the New Jersey State Police says they are treating the incident as a bias crime. (AP Photo/Courtesy of Grewal family)

Cross burnings. Schoolchildren chanting "Assassinate Obama." Black figures hung from nooses. Racial epithets scrawled on homes and cars.

Incidents around the country referring to President-elect Barack Obama are dampening the postelection glow of racial progress and harmony, highlighting the stubborn racism that remains in America.

From California to Maine, police have documented a range of alleged crimes, from vandalism and vague threats to at least one physical attack. Insults and taunts have been delivered by adults, college students and second-graders.

There have been "hundreds" of incidents since the election, many more than usual, said Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate crimes.

One was in Snellville, Ga., where Denene Millner said a boy on the school bus told her 9-year-old daughter the day after the election: "I hope Obama gets assassinated." That night, someone trashed her sister-in-law's front lawn, mangled the Obama lawn signs, and left two pizza boxes filled with human feces outside the front door, Millner said.

She described her emotions as a combination of anger and fear.

"I can't say that every white person in Snellville is evil and anti-Obama and willing to desecrate my property because one or two idiots did it," said Millner, who is black. "But it definitely makes you look a little different at the people who you live with, and makes you wonder what they're capable of and what they're really thinking."

Potok, who is white, said he believes there is "a large subset of white people in this country who feel that they are losing everything they know, that the country their forefathers built has somehow been stolen from them."

Grant Griffin, a 46-year-old white Georgia native, expressed similar sentiments: "I believe our nation is ruined and has been for several decades and the election of Obama is merely the culmination of the change.

"If you had real change it would involve all the members of (Obama's) church being deported," he said.

Change in whatever form does not come easy, and a black president is "the most profound change in the field of race this country has experienced since the Civil War," said William Ferris, senior associate director of the Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina. "It's shaking the foundations on which the country has existed for centuries."

"Someone once said racism is like cancer," Ferris said. "It's never totally wiped out, it's in remission."

If so, America's remission lasted until the morning of Nov. 5.

The day after the vote hailed as a sign of a nation changed, black high school student Barbara Tyler of Marietta, Ga., said she heard hateful Obama comments from white students, and that teachers cut off discussion about Obama's victory.

Tyler spoke at a press conference by the Georgia chapter of the NAACP calling for a town hall meeting to address complaints from across the state about hostility and resentment. Another student, from a Covington middle school, said he was suspended for wearing an Obama shirt to school Nov. 5 after the principal told students not to wear political paraphernalia.

The student's mother, Eshe Riviears, said the principal told her: "Whether you like it or not, we're in the South, and there are a lot of people who are not happy with this decision."

Other incidents include:

_Four North Carolina State University students admitted writing anti-Obama comments in a tunnel designated for free speech expression, including one that said: "Let's shoot that (N-word) in the head." Obama has received more threats than any other president-elect, authorities say.

_At Standish, Maine, a sign inside the Oak Hill General Store read: "Osama Obama Shotgun Pool." Customers could sign up to bet $1 on a date when Obama would be killed. "Stabbing, shooting, roadside bombs, they all count," the sign said. At the bottom of the marker board was written "Let's hope someone wins."

_Racist graffiti was found in places including New York's Long Island, where two dozen cars were spray-painted; Kilgore, Texas, where the local high school and skate park were defaced; and the Los Angeles area, where swastikas, racial slurs and "Go Back To Africa" were spray painted on sidewalks, houses and cars.

_Second- and third-grade students on a school bus in Rexburg, Idaho, chanted "assassinate Obama," a district official said.

_University of Alabama professor Marsha L. Houston said a poster of the Obama family was ripped off her office door. A replacement poster was defaced with a death threat and a racial slur. "It seems the election brought the racist rats out of the woodwork," Houston said.

_Black figures were hanged by nooses from trees on Mount Desert Island, Maine, the Bangor Daily News reported. The president of Baylor University in Waco, Texas said a rope found hanging from a campus tree was apparently an abandoned swing and not a noose.

_Crosses were burned in yards of Obama supporters in Hardwick, N.J., and Apolacan Township, Pa.

_A black teenager in New York City said he was attacked with a bat on election night by four white men who shouted 'Obama.'

_In the Pittsburgh suburb of Forest Hills, a black man said he found a note with a racial slur on his car windshield, saying "now that you voted for Obama, just watch out for your house."

Emotions are often raw after a hard-fought political campaign, but now those on the losing side have an easy target for their anger.

"The principle is very simple," said BJ Gallagher, a sociologist and co-author of the diversity book "A Peacock in the Land of Penguins." "If I can't hurt the person I'm angry at, then I'll vent my anger on a substitute, i.e., someone of the same race."

"We saw the same thing happen after the 9-11 attacks, as a wave of anti-Muslim violence swept the country. We saw it happen after the Rodney King verdict, when Los Angeles blacks erupted in rage at the injustice perpetrated by 'the white man.'"

"It's as stupid and ineffectual as kicking your dog when you've had a bad day at the office," Gallagher said. "But it happens a lot."

During the recent campaigns, there was much talk of "Christian" values. Sarah Palin, especially, made many references to "blessings," "God's will," etc. Yet, the behavior discussed in this article clearly reflects, among other things, a failure of Christian churches in America to communicate a powerful and authentic message to their members. The very people who engage in hate crimes often identify themselves as "Christians" and members of the "religious" Right"; they often judge those with different values as "evil." Sadly, the behavior of such people fails to reflect the true teachings of the New Testament.
Christian leaders must begin to address this failure, if the Church is ever to have credibility in this country. It is a critical time for all who call themselves Christians to speak out, confront those who are filled with hatred, and challenge the "faithful" to demonstrate a true commitment to Christ.
It is also the responsibilty of Christian churches to work fervently to end racial hatred. Until American churches in every region of the country successfully spread Christ's message of love and universal brotherhood, bigotry will continue--and will thrive in the midst of a culture saturated with religious platitudes and shallow allegiance to the false god of hatred and prejudice.

My Obama sign was stolen election night, too. But I relished wearing my President Obama tee shirt the day after the election and the day after that.....I've had to live with other folks vote for eight years NOW they can live with mine. I've never been more proud to call myself an American. God keep Barack Obama and his family safe and well......It's a NEW DAY!

Barack Obama could not have been elected without the votes of millions of white Americans. Unfortunately, it only takes a small percentage of the population to overshadow this progress in race relations. Bigotry and racism that had been dormant, was exposed during this election campaign by inflammatory anti Obama rhetoric deliberately aimed to mislead a target demographic. Is this ugly aftermath we are now witnessing the legacy of that campaign?

Thank you Eyecon for your comment "if you hear it or see it - don't ignore it.". I will take that to heart. I am a 40year old white woman in DFW Texas. So far I have not seen/heard anything so stupid, which is GREAT. I am truely saddened by all these incidents, and hope that I don't run into it. If I do, for my 19month old son's sake, I will not ignore it.

Does anyone have any actionable ideas on how to get FOX to stop the fearmongering? I realize they want ratings, but they are inciting panic (rediculous as it is) and I don't think that's legal. What can we do? Any ideas?

the following i found online. Mr Rupert Murdoch owns fox news

The address for Mr. Murdoch is:

Rupert Murdoch
Chairman and Chief Executive
News Corporation
1211 Avenue of Americas
8th Floor
NY, NY 10036

The main telephone number for News Corp is 212-852-7000, and they
should be able to put you through to Mr. Murdoch's office.

There is no published email address for Mr. Murdoch. However, you can
see that the general format for emails at News Corp is first
initial-last name newscorp.comm.

For instance, the email listing for Teri Everett, Vice President is
given as E-Mail: newscorp.comscorp.com.

So, one can take an educated guess, at least, that Rupert Murdoch's
email address is newscorp.comscorp.com

Great idea - I was thinking the same thing. Any attorneys out there who could tell us if a class action suit is possible? I don't want money, just results!

READING THIS STORY HURTS MY HEART TO THE CORE. IT IS SO SAD THAT WE AS A COUNTRY ARE NOT PAST HATING SOMEONE BECAUSE OF THE COLOR OF THEIR SKIN. SO SAD, AND TO THINK THAT OUR CHILDREN HAVE TO WITNESS SUCH HATE AND EVIL. SHAME ON ALL WHO HATE THEIR NEIGHBOR BECAUSE THEY ARE DIFFERENT. ALL I CAN DO IS PRAY.

Who said American was in "remission" from racism? In terms of this "cancer", I consider the election as a lumpectomy from racism, but we'll always be in chemotherapy from the institutionalized racism that in the bloodstream of America.

Racism is like a smoldering ember that has burst out into a fire. This particular fire needs to be stamped out before it becomes a raging conflagration.

The MSM and the Secret Service underplayed racism at Palin rallies as politics as usual. How sad that they contributed to this atmosphere of hate by ignoring it.

America is a great country with some pitiful people. As an American and Latino bigotry and racism is nothing new to me. Before the election, during the election, and after the election Latinos will always been looked upon as "illegal aliens" what ever that means. So why be surprised that now that we have elected a competent and intelligent President these same bigots are still around. It is sad that in this day and age racists still exist. The hate they have in their hearts will eventually destroy their lives and they will die in shame, alone, and in darkness.

Sadly, Sarah Palin and her crew exposed our dirty little secret here in "imperfect" America, that racism and hatred are alive and well...we are making progress, but I was appalled to see how deep it is embedded.

I see this election and this president as a wake-up call to our nation, and I do think the younger generation will not repeat the mistakes of the past.

James Edwards is really stoking the fire. One of his less offensive comments was "And why would a rational person not be skeptical of having a black head of state, given the track record of countries which have black heads of state? Where are all these countries that demonstrate what a good idea black rule is?"

It's truly amazing that Pitchfork Pat was not bounced off of MSNBC after a guest appearance on Edwards' radio show that was streamed live on StormFront.. Edwards is closely connected to the Council of Conservative Citizens. Their chapters are the successors to the White Citizens Councils that existed throughout the south. Tony Perkins has addressed the CofCC. He recently sent out a fundraiser email ( http://www.tips-q.com/content/tony-perkins-new-agenda) in which is disclosed his plans to completely undermine Obama - before he has even taken office.

The bottom line is that the radical right has gone ballistic. just by virtue of Obama's election in contrast to any specific action on his part.

My suggestion for people of good will is - if you hear it or see it - don't ignore it.

"Second- and third-grade students on a school bus in Rexburg, Idaho, chanted "assassinate Obama," a district official said."
I wonder where they learned to say that?

I live in the Atlanta metro area of Georgia and even though the city is diverse this is still the deep south so I can't say I am surprised by all the hate.
