This undated file photo provided by Gary and Alina Grewal of Hardwick Township, N.J., shows a charred cross that had been burned on the lawn of their home. The Grewals placed a banner congratulating President-elect Barack Obama on his election victory in their yard and found the banner wrapped around the charred cross Nov. 6, 2008. Lt. Gerald Lewis of the New Jersey State Police says they are treating the incident as a bias crime. (AP Photo/Courtesy of Grewal family)

Cross burnings. Schoolchildren chanting "Assassinate Obama." Black figures hung from nooses. Racial epithets scrawled on homes and cars.

Incidents around the country referring to President-elect Barack Obama are dampening the postelection glow of racial progress and harmony, highlighting the stubborn racism that remains in America.

From California to Maine, police have documented a range of alleged crimes, from vandalism and vague threats to at least one physical attack. Insults and taunts have been delivered by adults, college students and second-graders.

There have been "hundreds" of incidents since the election, many more than usual, said Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate crimes.

One was in Snellville, Ga., where Denene Millner said a boy on the school bus told her 9-year-old daughter the day after the election: "I hope Obama gets assassinated." That night, someone trashed her sister-in-law's front lawn, mangled the Obama lawn signs, and left two pizza boxes filled with human feces outside the front door, Millner said.

She described her emotions as a combination of anger and fear.

"I can't say that every white person in Snellville is evil and anti-Obama and willing to desecrate my property because one or two idiots did it," said Millner, who is black. "But it definitely makes you look a little different at the people who you live with, and makes you wonder what they're capable of and what they're really thinking."

Potok, who is white, said he believes there is "a large subset of white people in this country who feel that they are losing everything they know, that the country their forefathers built has somehow been stolen from them."

Grant Griffin, a 46-year-old white Georgia native, expressed similar sentiments: "I believe our nation is ruined and has been for several decades and the election of Obama is merely the culmination of the change.

"If you had real change it would involve all the members of (Obama's) church being deported," he said.

Change in whatever form does not come easy, and a black president is "the most profound change in the field of race this country has experienced since the Civil War," said William Ferris, senior associate director of the Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina. "It's shaking the foundations on which the country has existed for centuries."

"Someone once said racism is like cancer," Ferris said. "It's never totally wiped out, it's in remission."

If so, America's remission lasted until the morning of Nov. 5.

The day after the vote hailed as a sign of a nation changed, black high school student Barbara Tyler of Marietta, Ga., said she heard hateful Obama comments from white students, and that teachers cut off discussion about Obama's victory.

Tyler spoke at a press conference by the Georgia chapter of the NAACP calling for a town hall meeting to address complaints from across the state about hostility and resentment. Another student, from a Covington middle school, said he was suspended for wearing an Obama shirt to school Nov. 5 after the principal told students not to wear political paraphernalia.

The student's mother, Eshe Riviears, said the principal told her: "Whether you like it or not, we're in the South, and there are a lot of people who are not happy with this decision."

Other incidents include:

_Four North Carolina State University students admitted writing anti-Obama comments in a tunnel designated for free speech expression, including one that said: "Let's shoot that (N-word) in the head." Obama has received more threats than any other president-elect, authorities say.

_At Standish, Maine, a sign inside the Oak Hill General Store read: "Osama Obama Shotgun Pool." Customers could sign up to bet $1 on a date when Obama would be killed. "Stabbing, shooting, roadside bombs, they all count," the sign said. At the bottom of the marker board was written "Let's hope someone wins."

_Racist graffiti was found in places including New York's Long Island, where two dozen cars were spray-painted; Kilgore, Texas, where the local high school and skate park were defaced; and the Los Angeles area, where swastikas, racial slurs and "Go Back To Africa" were spray painted on sidewalks, houses and cars.

_Second- and third-grade students on a school bus in Rexburg, Idaho, chanted "assassinate Obama," a district official said.

_University of Alabama professor Marsha L. Houston said a poster of the Obama family was ripped off her office door. A replacement poster was defaced with a death threat and a racial slur. "It seems the election brought the racist rats out of the woodwork," Houston said.

_Black figures were hanged by nooses from trees on Mount Desert Island, Maine, the Bangor Daily News reported. The president of Baylor University in Waco, Texas said a rope found hanging from a campus tree was apparently an abandoned swing and not a noose.

_Crosses were burned in yards of Obama supporters in Hardwick, N.J., and Apolacan Township, Pa.

_A black teenager in New York City said he was attacked with a bat on election night by four white men who shouted 'Obama.'

_In the Pittsburgh suburb of Forest Hills, a black man said he found a note with a racial slur on his car windshield, saying "now that you voted for Obama, just watch out for your house."

Emotions are often raw after a hard-fought political campaign, but now those on the losing side have an easy target for their anger.

"The principle is very simple," said BJ Gallagher, a sociologist and co-author of the diversity book "A Peacock in the Land of Penguins." "If I can't hurt the person I'm angry at, then I'll vent my anger on a substitute, i.e., someone of the same race."

"We saw the same thing happen after the 9-11 attacks, as a wave of anti-Muslim violence swept the country. We saw it happen after the Rodney King verdict, when Los Angeles blacks erupted in rage at the injustice perpetrated by 'the white man.'"

"It's as stupid and ineffectual as kicking your dog when you've had a bad day at the office," Gallagher said. "But it happens a lot."

Lou Dobbs should be taken off the air also. He incites hatred against minorities and I hope he watched the trial where a teenage Latino boy was awarded 2.5 million dollars for being beaten by racists who thought he was illegally in this country. WOnder what he would have said if that was his son who was beaten mercilessly.

Lou Dobbs belongs over at Fox. Lump him in with Hannity and Billo and they can have a grand ole time. I won't be watching!

When you continue to repeat news that wouldn't be if it wasn't racial, you encourage more of this behavior. It emboldens people to act on their thoughts. It's called "The Lucifer Effect!" There is a book written on this subject by that name. I live in Huntsville, Alabama which was split about 50/50. I being a white democrat, do run upon one of these Bubbas on occasion. I though can't keep my mouth shut, so I try to stay away from them as much as I can. If I stay and give them an ear, it will only continue.

Therefore, what do we need to do folks? Quit talking about it!
02:03 PM on 11/19/2008
Yups I somewhat agree with ya. A large percentage of these Bubbas will not change the way they think, hence a good solution is to not to talk much about their actions because if the Media talks about one Bubba's actions the other Bubbas commend him and might be inspired to go to the next step.

With such people, just silently punish them for their actions and with time the number of Bubba's will diminish but won't be eliminated. There will always be religious fanatic Bubbas, there will always be Racist Bubbas, there will always be Bubbas who are opposed to other races, Black against white etc.

So one should adopt strategy of limiting their harm.

Racism is alive and well. I had to sit there and listen to racist comments about certain tribal Black people being "part orangutan" and "cavemen" because of their physical traits the other night. Me being Black, took offense. It was qualified by "Oh but you're not really Black" (maybe because my watered down features are easier on his biased eyes...).

It makes me sick to my stomach that in this day and age, a person's physical appearance can incite such racism.

But my parents didn't fight and my relatives didn't die for me to give up and roll over. Good needs to SPEAK OUT on this and not bury it under the carpet. This president wil force all the hate to the surface and it must be confronted, faced and defeated. The time is now.

Progress of the human race cannot be thwarted by a couple, or even thousands of lunatics of hate. You will always find those in any society--whether it is in Darfur or Rwanda or elsewhere. Thre is no turning back the hands of the clock of progress. Broad and more enlightening vision will always in the end trump the narrow vision of selfish individualists. What is happening (the currnt negatives) are minor compared to the positives--the courageous act of millions who voted for progress. This country will also overcome the nasty antics of those who choose to stand in the way of progress! I am so proud of the United States!!!

I guess there won't be any arguments left for those who said that there is no such thing like racism in America.

I live in Tuscaloosa, Al. When our local paper first printed the story of the professors encounter with hate, they said "we will not identify which candidate poster was violated." Does anyone have a doubt whose poster it is when it comes to vandalism or theft in the very red(neck) regions of this country? There was actually a letter to the editor cheering the solidarity of the southeastern region for their rejection of Obama. Let me tell you from first hand experience, race hate runs deep in this neck of the woods. My white skin allows me access to the closed door sessions where Bubba speaks freely. Igrew up with these people. Went to school with them. Worked with them. Dealt with them on a daily basis. Bubba HATES! Bubba teaches his children to hate. I do not envy the Secret Service their task. Oh sure, there are always nutbags out there but never with such a "built-in" target of hate. These agents are going to earn their money like never before. We must confront hate vigerously. Challenge hateful speech immediatly. That is why I will be boldly wearing my Obama bumper sticker for the next 8 years (and not just as a needle to those fecious little "W" twerps) but as an outright "I Dare You" directed to any Rethuglican who thinks they have a big enough pair to remove it. Cowards that they are, I don't anticipate any takers. YES WE DID! YES WE DID!

Thank you SO MUCH for your post! As a black woman, I have been feeling very discouraged of late, with so many people acting like racism is a "thing of the past". That type of denial has a way of making one's head feel like it's going to explode, and it leads to feelings of discouragement and helplessness. So I really appreciate your post...you have no idea how refreshing it is just to hear someone tell the truth: hate ABOUNDS in our society...I just experienced it firsthand the other day.

I'm all ready to begin the work that needs to be done of supporting President-elect Obama as he enacts his policies of change, but I've also felt hesitant to team up with non-black people who are in such serious denial. The issues are so much more complicated than most non-blacks are willing to acknowledge. Thank you for speaking out...if more people were honest like you, this country would truly be a better place.

I am a very partisan republican and I want no part of racial division over this election...
Liberalism is poised to expose itself for all to see...This is our opportunity for many to see for themselves what we have been telling them about the left for 40 years...This country was obviously ready for a black president. Now we'll see if they are ready for a far left socialist in the White House?
05:23 PM on 11/16/2008
You want "no part of racial division" yet you happily continue to spread ignorant lies about Obama? Personally, I wish he was a "far left socialist" but, alas, he's rather centrist.
05:40 PM on 11/16/2008
The socialist is your current President-Bush. It's obvious that you are not very familiar with the definition of socialism. The bailouts are the biggest form of Socialim to me. Get use to it-Obama is President. What you and your white counterparts are now feelings, we as Black people have felt for years. Did you really think that nation was restricted to White power and priviledge? This is just the beginning-the first shall be last and the last shall be first. It will happen.
12:27 PM on 11/17/2008
Bush is a kleptocrat.

Socialism involves giving control of industry over to "WE, THE PEOPLE", which is why the Republicans make "socialism" into a red-herring. They'd much rather give control of government over to private corporations.

I'm glad McCain/Palin stirred the base of h.*ate. It can finally get out and get over.

Some people just will not move into the 21st century. Or the 20th century for that matter. They still think we are in the civil war for Pete's sake.

I have to point my finger directly at John McCain and Sarah Palin for stirring up the hornets nest. Surely there would have been too many incidents in spite of them, but their refusal to tone down anti-Obama rhetoric and the insinuating lies contributed very significantly to this situation.

They need to come out and specifically address this situation on national T.V. - both of them need to stress how wrong it is and how the election is over and how we need to pull together and move on. Once again, the silence is deafening.

Reading these things makes me so sad. I wish these haters would use this energy for something better. Something positive instead of negative. If we can't come together as a unified people we are all ill-fated. Barack Obama is not black. He is half white and half black. He is the embodiment of love between opposites. Doesn't it make more sense to include and accept rather than to reject?
Tolerance and acceptance, not intolerance, is what will make our country strong. Acceptance is what the poem written at the foot of the satue of liberty is all about. These people that want to cling to antiquated views of the past are divisive and burdensome. If we can't get the message of inclusion and acceptance into the forefront, this irrational hatred will be the downfall of the USA.

This is sad. Why can't people learn to love one another? It is bad when kids are taught to hate.

The two most egregious incidents omitted from this list were the arson of a black church in Springfield, Massachusetts on election night, and the firebombing in Western Pennsylvania of a black family's car right outside their house, while they were watching Obama give his victory speech on TV.

Before the arsonists burned the car, they tossed the family's Obama yard sign through a window and spraypainted "Obama" across the trunk. The blaze almost caught the family's house on fire, leaving them afraid for their safety in a home where four generations of black Pennsylvanians have lived.

Charitable funds have been set up to support the victims. For more info, see this report from NewsOne:

I hope the pertrepators have been found and locked-up. I wonder how serious the police investigage hate crime. It amazes me that people are writing and speaking harm against Obama and they are not being arrested. For instance, the North Carolina State University situation. The individuals were arrested and they made a threat in writing against Obama's life.

Folks, there is an "upside" to this. Remember THIS is the Repug base, not the moderates. This is a clear road map to win MANY future election cycles! Never forget the venom these "people" spew. Use it against them. Don't get mad, get even!!!!!!
