This undated file photo provided by Gary and Alina Grewal of Hardwick Township, N.J., shows a charred cross that had been burned on the lawn of their home. The Grewals placed a banner congratulating President-elect Barack Obama on his election victory in their yard and found the banner wrapped around the charred cross Nov. 6, 2008. Lt. Gerald Lewis of the New Jersey State Police says they are treating the incident as a bias crime. (AP Photo/Courtesy of Grewal family)

Cross burnings. Schoolchildren chanting "Assassinate Obama." Black figures hung from nooses. Racial epithets scrawled on homes and cars.

Incidents around the country referring to President-elect Barack Obama are dampening the postelection glow of racial progress and harmony, highlighting the stubborn racism that remains in America.

From California to Maine, police have documented a range of alleged crimes, from vandalism and vague threats to at least one physical attack. Insults and taunts have been delivered by adults, college students and second-graders.

There have been "hundreds" of incidents since the election, many more than usual, said Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate crimes.

One was in Snellville, Ga., where Denene Millner said a boy on the school bus told her 9-year-old daughter the day after the election: "I hope Obama gets assassinated." That night, someone trashed her sister-in-law's front lawn, mangled the Obama lawn signs, and left two pizza boxes filled with human feces outside the front door, Millner said.

She described her emotions as a combination of anger and fear.

"I can't say that every white person in Snellville is evil and anti-Obama and willing to desecrate my property because one or two idiots did it," said Millner, who is black. "But it definitely makes you look a little different at the people who you live with, and makes you wonder what they're capable of and what they're really thinking."

Potok, who is white, said he believes there is "a large subset of white people in this country who feel that they are losing everything they know, that the country their forefathers built has somehow been stolen from them."

Grant Griffin, a 46-year-old white Georgia native, expressed similar sentiments: "I believe our nation is ruined and has been for several decades and the election of Obama is merely the culmination of the change.

"If you had real change it would involve all the members of (Obama's) church being deported," he said.

Change in whatever form does not come easy, and a black president is "the most profound change in the field of race this country has experienced since the Civil War," said William Ferris, senior associate director of the Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina. "It's shaking the foundations on which the country has existed for centuries."

"Someone once said racism is like cancer," Ferris said. "It's never totally wiped out, it's in remission."

If so, America's remission lasted until the morning of Nov. 5.

The day after the vote hailed as a sign of a nation changed, black high school student Barbara Tyler of Marietta, Ga., said she heard hateful Obama comments from white students, and that teachers cut off discussion about Obama's victory.

Tyler spoke at a press conference by the Georgia chapter of the NAACP calling for a town hall meeting to address complaints from across the state about hostility and resentment. Another student, from a Covington middle school, said he was suspended for wearing an Obama shirt to school Nov. 5 after the principal told students not to wear political paraphernalia.

The student's mother, Eshe Riviears, said the principal told her: "Whether you like it or not, we're in the South, and there are a lot of people who are not happy with this decision."

Other incidents include:

_Four North Carolina State University students admitted writing anti-Obama comments in a tunnel designated for free speech expression, including one that said: "Let's shoot that (N-word) in the head." Obama has received more threats than any other president-elect, authorities say.

_At Standish, Maine, a sign inside the Oak Hill General Store read: "Osama Obama Shotgun Pool." Customers could sign up to bet $1 on a date when Obama would be killed. "Stabbing, shooting, roadside bombs, they all count," the sign said. At the bottom of the marker board was written "Let's hope someone wins."

_Racist graffiti was found in places including New York's Long Island, where two dozen cars were spray-painted; Kilgore, Texas, where the local high school and skate park were defaced; and the Los Angeles area, where swastikas, racial slurs and "Go Back To Africa" were spray painted on sidewalks, houses and cars.

_Second- and third-grade students on a school bus in Rexburg, Idaho, chanted "assassinate Obama," a district official said.

_University of Alabama professor Marsha L. Houston said a poster of the Obama family was ripped off her office door. A replacement poster was defaced with a death threat and a racial slur. "It seems the election brought the racist rats out of the woodwork," Houston said.

_Black figures were hanged by nooses from trees on Mount Desert Island, Maine, the Bangor Daily News reported. The president of Baylor University in Waco, Texas said a rope found hanging from a campus tree was apparently an abandoned swing and not a noose.

_Crosses were burned in yards of Obama supporters in Hardwick, N.J., and Apolacan Township, Pa.

_A black teenager in New York City said he was attacked with a bat on election night by four white men who shouted 'Obama.'

_In the Pittsburgh suburb of Forest Hills, a black man said he found a note with a racial slur on his car windshield, saying "now that you voted for Obama, just watch out for your house."

Emotions are often raw after a hard-fought political campaign, but now those on the losing side have an easy target for their anger.

"The principle is very simple," said BJ Gallagher, a sociologist and co-author of the diversity book "A Peacock in the Land of Penguins." "If I can't hurt the person I'm angry at, then I'll vent my anger on a substitute, i.e., someone of the same race."

"We saw the same thing happen after the 9-11 attacks, as a wave of anti-Muslim violence swept the country. We saw it happen after the Rodney King verdict, when Los Angeles blacks erupted in rage at the injustice perpetrated by 'the white man.'"

"It's as stupid and ineffectual as kicking your dog when you've had a bad day at the office," Gallagher said. "But it happens a lot."

This is not about hate for the sake of hate. This is about white privilege. These people cannot articulate their it, but they are afraid that they are about to lose their"prvilege" as white people....whatever that means to them. The sad thing is that this is "all ado about nothing"...a tempest in a tea pot !. White privilege does exist and will continue to exist long after obama is president....educated white men know that so their not complaining; its the illiterate "joe the plumbers" in the north and south who are fearful, confused and are lashing out. I just wish their "slightly more educated" counterparts in the media(Fox News) will calm their fears so these incidents will cease.

Unfortunately conservative commentators like Limbaugh, Hannity and O'Reilly contribute to this. Limbaugh called for riots in Denver while playing White Christmas in the background during the primaries. Hannity has had a bonna fide neo-nazi repeatedly as his guest on the radio and later on Fox. Very recently he had a rabid anti-semite on his show. O'Reilly has also shown insensitivity to minorities repeatedly. These are the agents of Rupert Murdoch, his New York Post goes beyond the pale sometimes also.

I think the tides are changing for these voices though as America sees that their philosophies have damaged this country in order to promote the agenda of the few. But it will take a long time for the fearful white folks to see that minorities just want to have the same chance at the American dream, they don't want to dominate white people.

A big shout out to McCain/Palin/Fox News for stirring the pot of racism. Yes, it did exist before the election but these folks put words into the mouths of people. Case in point: a mock election held in an elementary school. When one student says he voted for Obama the response from other students? He wants to take away our flag. He wants to pull babies out of mothers' stomachs. He want to bomb us. Did second graders make that up on their own? No. I know these families and they are not card carrying KKK members. They are ignorant, vulnerable people who believe politicians and think that if it is on Fox News it is true.

If you think it was McCain Palin who fostered this thinking you are way out of touch. As one who grew up in the great midwest, I can tell you racism is alive, well, and thriving in this country.

I do not disagree with your post. I make no argument that racism doesn't exist. I am simply saying one sould not excuse on bad behavior simply because other bad behavior exist.

I did not vote for Obama. I have a lot of misgivings about him just like I did when I voted for the Bush boys. But Obama is my President simply because he was elected by the people. An election does not sanctify a person or make him or her a good person. It simply means HE IS OUR President and deserves the respect and prayers of all of our citizens. I am concerned, however about a tone that I sense that President-Elect Obama should be beyond critism on his ideas or words as presented by his "team" or himself. I am concerned that the hanging of Palin in effigy did not bring the condemnation that the effigy hanging of Obama brings. But hanging in effigy any of our citizens should carry the same outcry and the same legal response. I find little comfort in excusing white effigy hangings simply because the country has not had a history of hanging white folks just for hate. In a final note, American citizen protestors have hung in effigy our Presidents and public officials in the name free speech. Is it hate speech. Yes. But that did not cause an outcry or legal action.

haha@ misgivings, the same lame vague attempt to cover the real reasons u did not vote for obama. most people that claim they did not vote for obama has failed to give any rational reasons why. what are these "misgivings", "uneasiness", or this "slickness" that u anti-obama people claim to have about him? i really would like to know what gives u those feelings???????? i bet i know.. and the fact that u came on here and tried to equate that gay couple's effigy of palin to the nonsense of these bigots brought about by palin herself and mccain, is just downright stupid. thats why her effigy didn't matter. she is the one that fueled the fire. it was one effigy of palin compared to how many of obama's before and after the election.

This racial hate is kept alive by the conservative churches and its political leaders. They are guilty and removing them from any type of power in society should begin. The media has exposed who they are as they were all more than happy to voice their hate publically. Remove them from power or public voice and many of these who dare act out, will be alone and go back into hiding. The church leader who called for an apocalpse if obama was elected should be stripped of the tax status they so enjoy. Media stations (fox) that spew out its hatred should not be watched and watch their ratings fall. Conservative leaders of the old fear and divide rule should be elected out. Society has the power to change this hate by ending the leadership roles of those who keep it alive and flourishing. It will take time and effort and we may have begun this clean up with this past election. Change churches if you know in your heart that your leaders are at the root of spewing this hate and stop electing these fringe nuts into office. We can do this together as a majority voice.

Thank you very much.
Many people do not to admit that the church plays an important role in stirring the hate and bigotry in our melting pot.

When was the last time you were in a so called conservative church? I live in Alabama and go to a Baptist church where racial hatred is condemned from the pulpit quite often. It was not always that way. I grew up hearing something different and it was wrong. But I have never heard hatred of anything but specific sin cited in the Bible cited from any church that I have attended and because of my military experience and moving around so much I have been a member of 30 churches (from Michigan to Georgia) in 50 years We have a diverse congregation. The only thing that Liberals would probably find fault with is the teaching against abortion because of the sincere biblical belief that a so called fetus is a life and that homosexuality is a sin. I do not hear hate the homosexual rather hate the behavior. We believe the Bible teaches love of all races and those who practice so called "sexual preferences". That does not make us ignorant or evil; just faithful to our GOD. If you have a problem with our beliefs, you have the right to challenge them, but read the Bible and you argue with the author.

I just want to point out to people who have dismissed these recent events to "racism as usual," need to understand that there has been a dramatic increase since Nov. 5th. As an African American who lives in N. CA I'm thankful I no longer live in Oklahoma. But I still have family there and in the deep south that I worry about. And the NATIONAL spotlight needs to shine on these incidents, the people who commit them, and McCain & Palin for fanning the flames.

Their hate rallies changed the election from POLICY difference to US v THEM! Period. Yes, people were going to be upset and mad Obama won, but McCain & Palin made their hatred legit with their comments & lack of resp. for their comments!

And just so you know, the incidents above are really just the TIP of the iceberg. Check out this article on Essence.com about the "Obama Backlash" http://www.essence.com/news_entertainment/news/articles/obamabacklash2

Then read some of the comments!

Some of you need to go back and read the post. When you do, you will see that some, not all, of these racist incidents happened in the South.

We are all so ready to blame the Republicans for inciting the behavior when actually, it started with HRC in her last days only to be regurgitated by the McPalin campaign. Both parties knew that these hate-filled people exist and were willing to capitalize on it. Apparently, the gloves are off because I think this is only the tip of the iceberg.

The difference in this time and times before is, there are enough people out there who will not tolerate the racist behavior.

Maybe, just maybe, if we had not white washed the history of this country and had given each ethnic group its due we wouldn't be discussing this in 2008. If it weren't for AA participation in the building of this nation, literally with the sweat of their brow, would we be here. We have fought valiantly in every war, including the American Revolution, so our blood help win this nation.

I want to believe that today is a new day, but sometimes it is hard to keep the "rose-colored glasses" on.

Exactly. And they're terrified that the chickens are about to come home to roost.

Like the person who posted that black people were being really rude to him and his wife after Obama was elected. Well, I'm sorry that happened to them, but I don't know how much of that I believe. Cuz I am a white woman who lives in Harlem and I have been treated with nothing but respect and kindness since the election. And when you're white and you live in the heart and soul of African American culture, that's pretty damn big.

I cannot possibly speak for black folk, I can only speak for myself and what I feel. But if I feel that we have finally moved forward and that we have a frakkin' chance for a better world-- not, perfect, just better--maybe others do too. Am I right?

Tragic. Most of the country is celebrating what may be the end of the nations greatest error and the dawn of a new. day. The whole world is excited about this brilliant mixed race president elect bringing a new world vision to the fore. But in backwoods Georgia, you best not be black after dark.

Almost 20 years ago I built a building in Waycross, Georgia. I went to lunch with my black foreman at a local restaurant. We left early, fearful we might be killed for daring to dine together ina p"white folks" restaurant. I was shocked. Being a southern man, born and raised, I thought we had moved far beyond this degree of racism, but it is alive and well in the rural South.

There are many good people in Georgia who are not racist and who are not ignorant. It is time they stood up to these bullies. No American citizen should suffer the indignities that are reported here.

And people could have the nerve to wonder why a Black woman in 2008 might say for the first time in a long time she loves her country?! This is not new. This is what minorities are forced to put up with every day...247/365. What I hope is that people who are not hateful and afraid of evolution...I hope that they will find a voice and speak out....it was all of us who did it with our votes...but to read where some people are saying..well what can you do...it's still the south....it's about high time the south got it through their cotton pickin heads....those days ARE NOT COMING BACK....what do you do about..speak up! If you learned ANYTHING from this election...then you should have learned this...one voice may not seem like a lot...but add another and another..and you can do anything....don't believe me...then tell me...how in the hell did we just elect a black man as the 44th president of the United States of America? By just sitting back...and taking what came....NO! We spoke up...called people like Caribu Barbie out on their hate filled rants! This was MY BIGGEST FEAR about her and McCain...they stoked those racist fires..made those folks feel legitimate in their feelings...then lost and went home! Didn't clean up their mess!
