This undated file photo provided by Gary and Alina Grewal of Hardwick Township, N.J., shows a charred cross that had been burned on the lawn of their home. The Grewals placed a banner congratulating President-elect Barack Obama on his election victory in their yard and found the banner wrapped around the charred cross Nov. 6, 2008. Lt. Gerald Lewis of the New Jersey State Police says they are treating the incident as a bias crime. (AP Photo/Courtesy of Grewal family)

Cross burnings. Schoolchildren chanting "Assassinate Obama." Black figures hung from nooses. Racial epithets scrawled on homes and cars.

Incidents around the country referring to President-elect Barack Obama are dampening the postelection glow of racial progress and harmony, highlighting the stubborn racism that remains in America.

From California to Maine, police have documented a range of alleged crimes, from vandalism and vague threats to at least one physical attack. Insults and taunts have been delivered by adults, college students and second-graders.

There have been "hundreds" of incidents since the election, many more than usual, said Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate crimes.

One was in Snellville, Ga., where Denene Millner said a boy on the school bus told her 9-year-old daughter the day after the election: "I hope Obama gets assassinated." That night, someone trashed her sister-in-law's front lawn, mangled the Obama lawn signs, and left two pizza boxes filled with human feces outside the front door, Millner said.

She described her emotions as a combination of anger and fear.

"I can't say that every white person in Snellville is evil and anti-Obama and willing to desecrate my property because one or two idiots did it," said Millner, who is black. "But it definitely makes you look a little different at the people who you live with, and makes you wonder what they're capable of and what they're really thinking."

Potok, who is white, said he believes there is "a large subset of white people in this country who feel that they are losing everything they know, that the country their forefathers built has somehow been stolen from them."

Story continues below

Grant Griffin, a 46-year-old white Georgia native, expressed similar sentiments: "I believe our nation is ruined and has been for several decades and the election of Obama is merely the culmination of the change.

"If you had real change it would involve all the members of (Obama's) church being deported," he said.

Change in whatever form does not come easy, and a black president is "the most profound change in the field of race this country has experienced since the Civil War," said William Ferris, senior associate director of the Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina. "It's shaking the foundations on which the country has existed for centuries."

"Someone once said racism is like cancer," Ferris said. "It's never totally wiped out, it's in remission."

If so, America's remission lasted until the morning of Nov. 5.

The day after the vote hailed as a sign of a nation changed, black high school student Barbara Tyler of Marietta, Ga., said she heard hateful Obama comments from white students, and that teachers cut off discussion about Obama's victory.

Tyler spoke at a press conference by the Georgia chapter of the NAACP calling for a town hall meeting to address complaints from across the state about hostility and resentment. Another student, from a Covington middle school, said he was suspended for wearing an Obama shirt to school Nov. 5 after the principal told students not to wear political paraphernalia.

The student's mother, Eshe Riviears, said the principal told her: "Whether you like it or not, we're in the South, and there are a lot of people who are not happy with this decision."

Other incidents include:

_Four North Carolina State University students admitted writing anti-Obama comments in a tunnel designated for free speech expression, including one that said: "Let's shoot that (N-word) in the head." Obama has received more threats than any other president-elect, authorities say.

_At Standish, Maine, a sign inside the Oak Hill General Store read: "Osama Obama Shotgun Pool." Customers could sign up to bet $1 on a date when Obama would be killed. "Stabbing, shooting, roadside bombs, they all count," the sign said. At the bottom of the marker board was written "Let's hope someone wins."

_Racist graffiti was found in places including New York's Long Island, where two dozen cars were spray-painted; Kilgore, Texas, where the local high school and skate park were defaced; and the Los Angeles area, where swastikas, racial slurs and "Go Back To Africa" were spray painted on sidewalks, houses and cars.

_Second- and third-grade students on a school bus in Rexburg, Idaho, chanted "assassinate Obama," a district official said.

_University of Alabama professor Marsha L. Houston said a poster of the Obama family was ripped off her office door. A replacement poster was defaced with a death threat and a racial slur. "It seems the election brought the racist rats out of the woodwork," Houston said.

_Black figures were hanged by nooses from trees on Mount Desert Island, Maine, the Bangor Daily News reported. The president of Baylor University in Waco, Texas said a rope found hanging from a campus tree was apparently an abandoned swing and not a noose.

_Crosses were burned in yards of Obama supporters in Hardwick, N.J., and Apolacan Township, Pa.

_A black teenager in New York City said he was attacked with a bat on election night by four white men who shouted 'Obama.'

_In the Pittsburgh suburb of Forest Hills, a black man said he found a note with a racial slur on his car windshield, saying "now that you voted for Obama, just watch out for your house."

Emotions are often raw after a hard-fought political campaign, but now those on the losing side have an easy target for their anger.

"The principle is very simple," said BJ Gallagher, a sociologist and co-author of the diversity book "A Peacock in the Land of Penguins." "If I can't hurt the person I'm angry at, then I'll vent my anger on a substitute, i.e., someone of the same race."

"We saw the same thing happen after the 9-11 attacks, as a wave of anti-Muslim violence swept the country. We saw it happen after the Rodney King verdict, when Los Angeles blacks erupted in rage at the injustice perpetrated by 'the white man.'"

"It's as stupid and ineffectual as kicking your dog when you've had a bad day at the office," Gallagher said. "But it happens a lot."

The unfortunate thing about this election is we expected these types of things to take place. This should not be a surprise to anybody. Obama decided to run for President because he was not ruled by fear. He already knew what to expect. He did not allow this kind of foolishness to be the determining factor in his presidential quest. The people who aren't happy will have to find a legal constructive outlet for the anger. The world is tired of being afraid of racists and terrorist. The world is changing and if anybody does not want to accept it they will just be left behind. I blogged about this very thing here http://entreed.com/?p=130

Sure, but let's be honest here. If he got elected, his name would be in the history books regardless of how his Presidency ends.

If, I understand you correctly, and I hope I misread your statement: You believe Obama just ran to get his name in the history books. You don't think, he "was in it to win it", as HRC would say.

Well, I have a question for you. Why did Dubya run? And, do you think history will tell the truth about him?

No one likes to lose. Some amount of anger was bound to be expressed (these are, after all, Republicans).

The level of the vitriol and violence is the responsibility of McCain and Palin. Not only did they not stop their supporters in their expressions of anger, they encouraged it.

If anything happens to Obama or his familly, McCain and Palin should be imprisoned.

If you think the people who are looking to beat up or kill minorities because Obama got elected are just "REPUBLICANS," then you need to wake up.

Racism is not limited to a political party. You have PLENTY of Democratic votes throughout this country who didn't vote for Obama because of his race and his middle name. They would have voted for the other Democrats had their names been at the top of the ticket.

Some of those generational Democrats in the south are still Democrats, but they vote Republican in Presidential elections because they see the Democratic Party nationally as colluding with "the blacks, the hispanics, the gays, etc."

Minority and youth voters overruled them this year, with the help of the media, of course.

America, A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. Matthew 7: 18-20

Racism is about hate and hate is evil.

These people are terrorist and need to be treated as such, American Osama Bin Ladens.

Whites must take the lead in destroying this evil!

Please don't reward these throwbacks with press space. Vigorously and quietly prosecute them; some of them can still learn that they aren't above the law. There's no law against being stupid, or a crackpot, or angry about not getting your 'due' of unearned privilege. But there are laws against the actions described here. Hook 'em, book 'em, cook 'em. When a few of their friends are cooling their heels doing 8 to 10, the rest will continue to run their mouths in private company but behave publicly.

prosecute them; Prosecuting them isn't good enough. PERSECUTION by making these bigots social outcasts (if they aren't already), and making them pariahs like this country did to O.J. Simpson after he got away with murder. Prosecute? Persecute is better. Make their lives miserable until they learn.

And we owe it all to the endless spewing of hatred by those overpaid enemies of our democracy, conservative talk radio hosts. We're listening, RUSH LIMBAUGH.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:14 AM on 11/16/2008

Yeah, because racism didn't exist BEFORE RUSH LIMBAUGH, right??? NOT.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:29 AM on 11/16/2008

Of course racism existed. But people like Limbaugh and Hannity legitimize hate by spewing it and fear-inspiring lies on the airwaves and, thus, fan the flames. They should be held responsible for their actions. If Bill Ayers were still a radical leftist and went on-air spewing half the nonsense these men do, the right would lynch him within hours.

Even better for the hicks to suffer that bad karma NOW. It is amazing to see how many people seem to think that what goes around comes around doesn't apply to them.

It makes me ill to read this story. This kind of reaction to an Obama win was one of my greatest concerns. My very own nephew caused me a lot of pain when he told me, prior to the election, that if Obama won, he was going to go buy as many guns as he could afford. It took me many hours on the long distance phone lines and many emails to convince him that spending his paltry savings in such a manner was not only a waste of money, but also a disrespect of his young family's financial well being. I finally got him to agree to give President Obama the opportunity to demonstrate how he can help us get out of this neocon generated mess. I ask every one of you who knows someone with even slight racial attitudes to try to get them to give the man a chance to do what the majority elected him to do.

Where I work the Racist comments have been daily, both in Text messages, e-mails and talk.

Me? I just nod and keep my mouth shut. I have to. This is the south after all. AND, I don't want to lose my job.

Change is coming. The old order, the sick white baby-boomers making these jokes will soon be going away and this nation will move forward. We just have to put with this mess for much longer.

This is the south after all. AND, I don't want to lose my job. It would be wrongful termination based on your beliefs which happen to be spiritually more advanced than your co-workers. I know jobs are scarce in this neocon-generated economic disaster, but you might do well by moving to a blue state and getting a job. Believe me, your co-workers probably already know your opinions by your silence, and if they are backstabbers, any bully that happens to be in your workplace could try to take advantage. I know. I lost a job because of my beliefs AND was blackballed from getting another job in the vocational area in which I am experienced. I happen to know who blacklisted me though I cannot prove it 100%. He is a Bush-supporter, and he called me down on a comment I made about the prospects of Iraq becoming a quagmire for this country if Bush should decide to attack Iraq. The next time I see that person, I am going to tell him I know that it is he who blackballed me, and that I was right about what I said, and what a stupid jerk he is. He will want to know where I work to try to blackball me after the fact out of a job. He won't get far. My boss is an attorney.

If you live in an area where this stuff is happening, set a trap. Put out a big Obama poster or banner and set up a camera with low light capability and catch them in the act. Or for more fun ambush them with some friends and a few baseball bats, maybe a few old tires and some gas

Love it! There is nothing more satisfying than successfully setting a jerk or jerks up for humiliation, or outright getting into trouble. Some might call it entrapment, but if you do it right, no one can say in a court of law, that it is entrapment. I've done it many times, and successfully. The law cannot, and often WILL NOT punish crimes of racism and bigotry. We citizens pretty much have to take matters into our own hands if we want to show some arrogant jerks a thing or two.

StrategicThinker, I believe by your post that you certainly don't condone hate crimes, but you seem to think that our leaders have little to do with its occurrence. Historians have marked the years of 1880-1920 as the epoch of racism in our country. There is even a name for this era, but it escapes me right now. Even though this was after the end of slavery, it was a time when the KKK had its highest membership and lynching reached peek levels.

During this period, leaders and law enforcement also "fanned the flames of racism." When those that lead do so in a way that validates the inner demons of racism, feelings turn to action. Only when enough people stand up against it, which is motivated by leaders who discourage racism, does the tide turn. We may never be able to eradicate racism, but public sentiment can go a long way in forcing it to retreat to an ugly dark corner instead of coming forth to bask in the light. When that happens, crimes go down and racism itself decreases.

There are measurable standards that we can use to evaluate this. The Southern Poverty Law Center has tracked such measures and has reported a marked increase in the amount of racism over the past eight years.

First of all, we elect REPRESENTATIVES, not leaders.

Obama isn't my "LEADER" any more than Bush was.

It is my job as a CITIZEN to make sure that I am being represented by those that are elected, not to DEFER AND SUBMIT to them while they run ramshot over us and enjoy the "perks" of the office.

When did the coverage of politics in the media shift from whether politicians were doing their job in representing the people appropriately to whether or not they were "great leaders"? This leadership crap is just a way to manipulate you into submission.

It is your job to be positively critical. Do Presidents have the opportunity to lead? Sure. Parents do, preachers do, activists do, of course Presidents do, but that is NOT what they are elected to do. In this representative democracy, they are elected to represent you, not to try to make YOU shut up and "get with the program."

Now, when it comes to the unreasonable idiots like these racists, they need leadership.

Why you would even be trying to figure out whether I "condone hate crimes" is ridiculous to begin with, when I am simply pointing out that Obama has been receiving death threats since he started running for President, so to keep trying to find some "INDIVIDUAL" to blame, it just plain shortsighted.

Racism has been around since human beings began separating themselves into groups of "us'es and them's," and this would have happened even Obama ran unchallenged.

If the GOP ever want power again they have to stop pandering to the likes of Palin. That woman has as much chance of winning the GOP nomination in 2012 as my grand mother. They have to reform themselves and understand that just like the Tories in England,to win power they have to be more inclusive and not steep to the lowest common denominator . I mean, c'mon we can all rally the base.. Real power only comes as a result of reaching out beyond your core constituency. Palin has as much chance of doing that as she has of coming out suddenly on GMA with Dianne Sawyer saying she is gay and has had a secret love affair with a Dutch female police officer in Amsterdam for rthe past 10 years. That is if she knew where that was.....

Look , racism is like cancer . It's never totally wiped out, however in this case the sad, angry putrid loser's ( in every sense of the word) should just get over their racist sentiments and accept that MORE people voted for Obama than those who did not . So as in all democracies, this time round their vote and their feelings don't count. In 4 years time they will be able to have another go at putting things 'RIGHT' .. but for now ..they are gonna have to live with the CHANGE that 52% of the country voted for .

Again, I say, these 2nd graders should be identified so the Secret Service can tell their parents that on NO uncertain terms, talk of assassination HAS TO stop. Impressionable second graders who have been taught to be bigoted grow up to do real damage to their targeted group. And yes, this IS serious enough so that the Secret Service DOES need to admonish parents. They also need to be monitored in case it happens again.

Why tell the whole world about the disgusting acts of some bigots? I think this only encourages others to do the same. Why not write about the millions who are so happy and proud of our new president? If those insecure, full of hatred, few are ignored they will see their actions are meaningless.
