This undated file photo provided by Gary and Alina Grewal of Hardwick Township, N.J., shows a charred cross that had been burned on the lawn of their home. The Grewals placed a banner congratulating President-elect Barack Obama on his election victory in their yard and found the banner wrapped around the charred cross Nov. 6, 2008. Lt. Gerald Lewis of the New Jersey State Police says they are treating the incident as a bias crime. (AP Photo/Courtesy of Grewal family)

Cross burnings. Schoolchildren chanting "Assassinate Obama." Black figures hung from nooses. Racial epithets scrawled on homes and cars.

Incidents around the country referring to President-elect Barack Obama are dampening the postelection glow of racial progress and harmony, highlighting the stubborn racism that remains in America.

From California to Maine, police have documented a range of alleged crimes, from vandalism and vague threats to at least one physical attack. Insults and taunts have been delivered by adults, college students and second-graders.

There have been "hundreds" of incidents since the election, many more than usual, said Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate crimes.

One was in Snellville, Ga., where Denene Millner said a boy on the school bus told her 9-year-old daughter the day after the election: "I hope Obama gets assassinated." That night, someone trashed her sister-in-law's front lawn, mangled the Obama lawn signs, and left two pizza boxes filled with human feces outside the front door, Millner said.

She described her emotions as a combination of anger and fear.

"I can't say that every white person in Snellville is evil and anti-Obama and willing to desecrate my property because one or two idiots did it," said Millner, who is black. "But it definitely makes you look a little different at the people who you live with, and makes you wonder what they're capable of and what they're really thinking."

Potok, who is white, said he believes there is "a large subset of white people in this country who feel that they are losing everything they know, that the country their forefathers built has somehow been stolen from them."

Grant Griffin, a 46-year-old white Georgia native, expressed similar sentiments: "I believe our nation is ruined and has been for several decades and the election of Obama is merely the culmination of the change.

"If you had real change it would involve all the members of (Obama's) church being deported," he said.

Change in whatever form does not come easy, and a black president is "the most profound change in the field of race this country has experienced since the Civil War," said William Ferris, senior associate director of the Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina. "It's shaking the foundations on which the country has existed for centuries."

"Someone once said racism is like cancer," Ferris said. "It's never totally wiped out, it's in remission."

If so, America's remission lasted until the morning of Nov. 5.

The day after the vote hailed as a sign of a nation changed, black high school student Barbara Tyler of Marietta, Ga., said she heard hateful Obama comments from white students, and that teachers cut off discussion about Obama's victory.

Tyler spoke at a press conference by the Georgia chapter of the NAACP calling for a town hall meeting to address complaints from across the state about hostility and resentment. Another student, from a Covington middle school, said he was suspended for wearing an Obama shirt to school Nov. 5 after the principal told students not to wear political paraphernalia.

The student's mother, Eshe Riviears, said the principal told her: "Whether you like it or not, we're in the South, and there are a lot of people who are not happy with this decision."

Other incidents include:

_Four North Carolina State University students admitted writing anti-Obama comments in a tunnel designated for free speech expression, including one that said: "Let's shoot that (N-word) in the head." Obama has received more threats than any other president-elect, authorities say.

_At Standish, Maine, a sign inside the Oak Hill General Store read: "Osama Obama Shotgun Pool." Customers could sign up to bet $1 on a date when Obama would be killed. "Stabbing, shooting, roadside bombs, they all count," the sign said. At the bottom of the marker board was written "Let's hope someone wins."

_Racist graffiti was found in places including New York's Long Island, where two dozen cars were spray-painted; Kilgore, Texas, where the local high school and skate park were defaced; and the Los Angeles area, where swastikas, racial slurs and "Go Back To Africa" were spray painted on sidewalks, houses and cars.

_Second- and third-grade students on a school bus in Rexburg, Idaho, chanted "assassinate Obama," a district official said.

_University of Alabama professor Marsha L. Houston said a poster of the Obama family was ripped off her office door. A replacement poster was defaced with a death threat and a racial slur. "It seems the election brought the racist rats out of the woodwork," Houston said.

_Black figures were hanged by nooses from trees on Mount Desert Island, Maine, the Bangor Daily News reported. The president of Baylor University in Waco, Texas said a rope found hanging from a campus tree was apparently an abandoned swing and not a noose.

_Crosses were burned in yards of Obama supporters in Hardwick, N.J., and Apolacan Township, Pa.

_A black teenager in New York City said he was attacked with a bat on election night by four white men who shouted 'Obama.'

_In the Pittsburgh suburb of Forest Hills, a black man said he found a note with a racial slur on his car windshield, saying "now that you voted for Obama, just watch out for your house."

Emotions are often raw after a hard-fought political campaign, but now those on the losing side have an easy target for their anger.

"The principle is very simple," said BJ Gallagher, a sociologist and co-author of the diversity book "A Peacock in the Land of Penguins." "If I can't hurt the person I'm angry at, then I'll vent my anger on a substitute, i.e., someone of the same race."

"We saw the same thing happen after the 9-11 attacks, as a wave of anti-Muslim violence swept the country. We saw it happen after the Rodney King verdict, when Los Angeles blacks erupted in rage at the injustice perpetrated by 'the white man.'"

"It's as stupid and ineffectual as kicking your dog when you've had a bad day at the office," Gallagher said. "But it happens a lot."

We have marched a long way towards the light of human dignity and equality since our Constitution became the Supreme Law of the Land more than two centuries ago:

The darkness of Article I, Section 2: "... free Persons ... excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons," - meaning slaves, disappeared in July 9, 1868 with the light of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

The darkness of the Plessy v. Ferguson case of 1898 which allowed racial segregation in the South through the doctrine of “separate but equal" disappeared in 1954 with the dawn of the Brown v. Board of Education case.

The darkness of disfranchising the African Americans gave way in 1965 to the light of the National Voting Rights Act.

On November 4, 2008, the coffin of racism was, however, nearly sealed with the election of Barack Hussein Obama as the next President of the United States.

The most troublesome fact about the lingering disease of racism is that the next generation is being infected by those of the present one.

The greatest responsibility for curing this lingering national sickness lies with those whose who have dedicated their lives to humanity’s spiritual guidance. They should take up the cause of the “light” and preach it from the pulpits until the darkness regardless of how it is manifested disappears from the face of our nation once and for all.

What was the America that these people cherish so much and now fear is vanishing? KKK rallies, lynchings, back of the bus, separate diners, racial inequality, etc.

Yes, that's what they miss, plus thinking they are superior to anyone with dark skin since they knew they will never be President, like Obama. A lot of them even think they will lose their jobs to less qualified Black people. Their feeling of superiority over Black people is being threatened.

Even without Sarah Palin, this crap would still be happening.

Sarah Palin is like George Bush. He never met a Black Republican that he didn't like and Sarah Palin never met a Black Pastor Witch Hunter that she didn't like.

I feel that this period of time (between now and Inauguration Day) is probably the most dangerous for our newly elected President and family! So I suggest we all do the following: remain vigilant, keep your eyes open, listen (and don't take for granted you're just hearing "idle chatter"), document when and if you safely can (keep those digital cameras and night vision binoculars handy) and then REPORT, REPORT, REPORT!

We have a voice and we can fight back against the bigotry and hatred that's bubbling to the surface...it's our duty as American citizens!!!

She poured gas on a fire.

She certainly did add more fuel. After all, she was John McCain's VP running mate and became an instant big hit with the media. We saw her rallies everyday on television and we cringed at her speeches. We also heard similar inflammatory remarks from other candidates, including from John McCain. Disgraceful.

Shortsightedness, grrrrrr. People keep trying to find a particular person to blame, because it's "EASIER," when what it really is is intellectually lazy.

Obama was receiving death threats back in the first quarter of 2007, before there was a GOP nominee or a Sarah Palin rally, because 1) HE WAS BLACK and 2) the EMAILS THAT WERE GOING AROUND about him.

The realization of a black President has pushed the racists over the edge, just like they got angrier and angrier the more apparent it became that he was going to get elected over the last month of the campaign.

THEY ALREADY KNEW ABOUT WILLIAM AYERS.

THEY ALREADY KNEW ABOUT RASHID KHALIDI.

THEY ALREADY KNEW THAT OBAMA'S MIDDLE NAME WAS HUSSEIN.

The only side that I care about is the side of TRUTH AND UNDERSTANDING. I get so sick and tired of people missing out on the truth because they keep looking for a PERSON to blame as if people dictate the truth.

They are doing this because they are RACISTS. They were doing it before Sarah Palin ever had a campaign rally, and they are still doing it because they have always been doing it.

Yes, much of this would be happening anyway, but it is hard to argue mere coincidence that the rate of hate crimes has increased dramatically in the past eight years. Latinos have actuallly been the victoms of choice by racist bigots up to now followed by Islamic/Arab Americans, gays and blacks. When our leaders condone and even promote a national tone of distrust and dislike for these groups, it validates racists.

While certainly not all Republicans are racists, it does force one to examine what it is about the policies of the Republican party that so atracts racists into its fold.

It is no wonder that we are seeing so much hate crime as the very first African American is elected president on the heals of a substantial increase in racism over the past eight years.

This is domestic terrorism of the worst sort, and it needs to be confronted NOW. If the GOP had any shred of dignity, they'd all be out there condemning this hateful stuff (after all, it's coming from their supporters). The GOP should feel somewhat responsible for this, since they helped to fan the flames of division and hatred with things like: "Obama pals around with terrorists"; "Obama's a socialist/communist"; playing the Reverend Wright videos over and over; and just the other day a Republican politician compared Obama to Hitler. There are more examples, but those are just the ones off the top of my head. All of these things only fan the flames of fear, which, in turn, ignites latent racism.
If the GOP chooses to turn a blind eye to all of this hateful garbage, they become enablers of racism, class division and hatred. It's up to you, GOP---what are you going to do?

To StrategicThinker! I'm sorry that you think it is a waste of time to come together as Americans. I love my country and I want nothing but the best for America. Now my question to you is , why is coming together a waste of time for you? What do you stand for? I will sacrifice anything to ensure that my country is free of fear and confusion!

God Bless America!!!!!!

Coming together FOR WHAT?

Tell me what you are coming together "FOR" and then I'll tell you whether or not it's going to lead to anything productive.

I don't care about people "COMING TOGETHER," but coming together IN AND OF ITSELF is a waste of time without PURPOSE.

Just getting together and singing Kumbaya might make you feel good, but it doesn't mean anything if you aren't moving in the right direction.

THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WERE TOGETHER FOR THE MOST PART AFTER 9/11, and what did we get out of it? THE PATRIOT ACT AND THE IRAQ WAR.

I repeat...COMING TOGETHER FOR WHAT?

We all must remain united, stand up and send a clear message that racism will not be tolerated. The public school system should teach our children that we are all equal and send a clear message on the dangers of racism and hate. Just the way we have drug prevention programs in our elementary schools where children are actually told that it is wrong for their family members to do drugs and they should report them. I think this is the only way to counteract the hate being taught to children in their homes and letting the children know the rest of society is not like that. This should especially be targeted in areas in our country where it is more prevalent and in some cases still tolerated.

My mother used to make a lot of racist statements. She stopped sometime in the 90's when I told her that evidence from the mapping of the human genome pointed to a "mitochondrial Eve" ( google it) the woman every person alive on the planet is descended from; a woman who lived 100 thousand years ago..........in Africa.

"So," I tells her, " when you disparage black people, you are disparaging your ancestors" that shut her up, at least around me.

Skin color is a result of where the races developed and how much melamine was needed to provide protection from the sun/ allow vitamin D to enter our bloodstreams. Any difference in the races is social, and situational not genetic. Tell THAT to the white supremacists! Stupid, stupid, stupid.

As painful as it is to read about these things, I hope that the media continues to carry these kinds of stories, especially when the perps take ownership of their behavior. Get them on camera and put it all over TV and the internet, make them and the locations known.
Some of these freaks may take some sort of pride in their actions as individuals, but perhaps with a few exceptions, not many communities will want to be identified with this kind of garbage these days, not when it comes to threatening the President-Elect of the United States.
Like the cowards of the Kl an hiding under their hoods, most of these freaks scatter like roaches from the glare of publicity, and this is another opportunity for the internet to help shine that light.

By bringing this out to the forefront at this time...do you think that maybe it would incite some of these thugs to try something more often and worse? Why are we just now talking about this. Well that is stupid, I know why. But look at the nooses...called "just a school boy prank". We are not willing to attack this disease with guts. The law can't legally or won't go after the ones they know are spewing hate and threats...we have become under Bush (truly it has worsened) for 8 years, divided, extremely partisan, Bible thumpers or not...righeous or not...etc...and all of this has pushed some of these people into drastic rhetoric and acts. We need to PROFILE some of them, doncha think.

Skin color is the SURFACE.

It goes deeper than that.

I repeat...IT'S THE US VERSUS THEM MENTALITY THAT PLAGUES HUMANITY.

It leads to war, racism, genocide, discrimination, etc.

As long as people keep focusing on what they SEE on the surface, these problems will continue. See a black man with a white woman, white men will be angry and so will black women, because each will respectively see the couple as being with "ONE OF THEM" from the other group.

It's the "us versus them" attitude that's at the core of all of this. It's the same thing that the Bush administration used to manipulate fools in the lead up to the Iraq war with the "You're either with US or against US" foolishness.

The result was FREEDOM FRIES and a hatred for most of Europe from the same idiots who are now angry that a black man with a muslim middle name was elected.
