This undated file photo provided by Gary and Alina Grewal of Hardwick Township, N.J., shows a charred cross that had been burned on the lawn of their home. The Grewals placed a banner congratulating President-elect Barack Obama on his election victory in their yard and found the banner wrapped around the charred cross Nov. 6, 2008. Lt. Gerald Lewis of the New Jersey State Police says they are treating the incident as a bias crime. (AP Photo/Courtesy of Grewal family)

Cross burnings. Schoolchildren chanting "Assassinate Obama." Black figures hung from nooses. Racial epithets scrawled on homes and cars.

Incidents around the country referring to President-elect Barack Obama are dampening the postelection glow of racial progress and harmony, highlighting the stubborn racism that remains in America.

From California to Maine, police have documented a range of alleged crimes, from vandalism and vague threats to at least one physical attack. Insults and taunts have been delivered by adults, college students and second-graders.

There have been "hundreds" of incidents since the election, many more than usual, said Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate crimes.

One was in Snellville, Ga., where Denene Millner said a boy on the school bus told her 9-year-old daughter the day after the election: "I hope Obama gets assassinated." That night, someone trashed her sister-in-law's front lawn, mangled the Obama lawn signs, and left two pizza boxes filled with human feces outside the front door, Millner said.

She described her emotions as a combination of anger and fear.

"I can't say that every white person in Snellville is evil and anti-Obama and willing to desecrate my property because one or two idiots did it," said Millner, who is black. "But it definitely makes you look a little different at the people who you live with, and makes you wonder what they're capable of and what they're really thinking."

Potok, who is white, said he believes there is "a large subset of white people in this country who feel that they are losing everything they know, that the country their forefathers built has somehow been stolen from them."

Story continues below

Grant Griffin, a 46-year-old white Georgia native, expressed similar sentiments: "I believe our nation is ruined and has been for several decades and the election of Obama is merely the culmination of the change.

"If you had real change it would involve all the members of (Obama's) church being deported," he said.

Change in whatever form does not come easy, and a black president is "the most profound change in the field of race this country has experienced since the Civil War," said William Ferris, senior associate director of the Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina. "It's shaking the foundations on which the country has existed for centuries."

"Someone once said racism is like cancer," Ferris said. "It's never totally wiped out, it's in remission."

If so, America's remission lasted until the morning of Nov. 5.

The day after the vote hailed as a sign of a nation changed, black high school student Barbara Tyler of Marietta, Ga., said she heard hateful Obama comments from white students, and that teachers cut off discussion about Obama's victory.

Tyler spoke at a press conference by the Georgia chapter of the NAACP calling for a town hall meeting to address complaints from across the state about hostility and resentment. Another student, from a Covington middle school, said he was suspended for wearing an Obama shirt to school Nov. 5 after the principal told students not to wear political paraphernalia.

The student's mother, Eshe Riviears, said the principal told her: "Whether you like it or not, we're in the South, and there are a lot of people who are not happy with this decision."

Other incidents include:

_Four North Carolina State University students admitted writing anti-Obama comments in a tunnel designated for free speech expression, including one that said: "Let's shoot that (N-word) in the head." Obama has received more threats than any other president-elect, authorities say.

_At Standish, Maine, a sign inside the Oak Hill General Store read: "Osama Obama Shotgun Pool." Customers could sign up to bet $1 on a date when Obama would be killed. "Stabbing, shooting, roadside bombs, they all count," the sign said. At the bottom of the marker board was written "Let's hope someone wins."

_Racist graffiti was found in places including New York's Long Island, where two dozen cars were spray-painted; Kilgore, Texas, where the local high school and skate park were defaced; and the Los Angeles area, where swastikas, racial slurs and "Go Back To Africa" were spray painted on sidewalks, houses and cars.

_Second- and third-grade students on a school bus in Rexburg, Idaho, chanted "assassinate Obama," a district official said.

_University of Alabama professor Marsha L. Houston said a poster of the Obama family was ripped off her office door. A replacement poster was defaced with a death threat and a racial slur. "It seems the election brought the racist rats out of the woodwork," Houston said.

_Black figures were hanged by nooses from trees on Mount Desert Island, Maine, the Bangor Daily News reported. The president of Baylor University in Waco, Texas said a rope found hanging from a campus tree was apparently an abandoned swing and not a noose.

_Crosses were burned in yards of Obama supporters in Hardwick, N.J., and Apolacan Township, Pa.

_A black teenager in New York City said he was attacked with a bat on election night by four white men who shouted 'Obama.'

_In the Pittsburgh suburb of Forest Hills, a black man said he found a note with a racial slur on his car windshield, saying "now that you voted for Obama, just watch out for your house."

Emotions are often raw after a hard-fought political campaign, but now those on the losing side have an easy target for their anger.

"The principle is very simple," said BJ Gallagher, a sociologist and co-author of the diversity book "A Peacock in the Land of Penguins." "If I can't hurt the person I'm angry at, then I'll vent my anger on a substitute, i.e., someone of the same race."

"We saw the same thing happen after the 9-11 attacks, as a wave of anti-Muslim violence swept the country. We saw it happen after the Rodney King verdict, when Los Angeles blacks erupted in rage at the injustice perpetrated by 'the white man.'"

"It's as stupid and ineffectual as kicking your dog when you've had a bad day at the office," Gallagher said. "But it happens a lot."

I do not understand, ... Asians, hispanics, african americans, etc., .. don't get all twisted when a white person gains access to an office of power. How come some white folk start going crazy when a minority gains office? Insecurities? Wow, talk about pathetic...

I know one thing, .. God don't like evil and hatred. Evil and hatred never win. Love your brother and sister, ... your fellow man and woman, and move forward.

The "some white folk" you are talking about have a sense of entitlement and are afraid that minorities will take over. Maybe do to them, what they have been doing to others?
That being said there are lots of white folk who will stand up against racism.

The problem with that is, those who have been at the end of racism, ... on the receiving side, understand profoundly, the destructive nature of it. They understand the ungodliness of it. To aspire to be like that which you know is inappropriate and not right, isn't the intrinsic nature of a human being.

With regard to Obama, and african americans as a whole, afrocentric ideology leans more towards the spiritual nature of humanity, rather than eurocentric capitalistic materialism. Is it about gains of wealth and prosperity, or about survival of race? Obama is showing a clear change in the process of thought and wisdom, as a leader, starting with his intent on taking power away from those lobbyists who have all but destroyed our democratic process.

What is feared, is illogical, being that Obama is part of a system that balances power and gives no man/woman extreme access to drastically affect the masses solely based upon his/her personal ideologies. Bush tried, and almost succeeded, but ...

Simply, those who look to harm, and look to disrupt, believe that their wanting to believe themselves as supreme, and all others as less than them.. this insecurity, .. they think that this is, somehow shared within the thoughts of everyone else. It is not.

The paradigm of an American and therein of an American president, in the minds of some white people, is white, Anglo-Saxon, protestant (WASP), male and wealthy. This is the natural order to them, and anything else is inherently unnatural. They embrace votes from Asians, Hispanics and African Americans, but they don't anticipate that Asians, Hispanics and African Americans would ever seek to upset the natural order of their worldview. Obama has shattered the natural order, possibly forever. However, by doing so, he's also shattered their self-image as well, the image that deludes them into believing that they are superior and blacks and other minorities are inferior; the image that deludes them into believing that they are entitled to what blacks and other minorities can never aspire to. In their small, deluded minds, Obama's election has not only diminished their perception of America, but has diminished them!! And so, as what happens when delusions are shattered, they go crazy!!!!

I'm sure that in acting out their craziness with hate and violence, they do so in the name of love for God and Country!!! But being as deluded as they are, they know neither love nor God.

Let me preface this by saying I heard this was said by one of the black superdelegates at the DNc and I hope that anyone who is white who reads this will take it in the spirit in which it was intended.

Regarding your comments about the image that deludes them into believing they are superior to blacks -- "George W Bush has forever destroyed the myth of white supremacy."

I'm betting that, back in the mid- to late-60s, this is what was happening, too. Out of that messy sewer of social slime, we got a voter rights act and a civil rights act, and the absolute death of "separate but equal" and Jim Crow once and for all (racially, that is -- still alive and well with regard to sexuality).

I can only hope that these things signal the usual fear and panic associated with the dawning of a new age of enlightenment and tolerance. The Republican Party spent millions of dollars convincing ignorant Americans that Obama was either a terrorist that was going to appoint Osama bin Laden as his Secretary of Defense, OR that he was an angry black man that was going to kill them all in their beds. It's going to take a while before people figure out otherwise.

They don't have to like Obama as president. They just have to live with it. Just like we did for eight long, dire, entropy-filled years. (Oh, and... we don't need new hate crime legislation, by the way. Regardless of where you write it or say it, it's still a felony to threaten the President of the United States with assassination. And that's a law I'm pretty sure that even George W. Bush would have messed with.)

This is exactly what Rep. John Louis was expressing when he called for McCain and Palin to stop. These two took the genie out of the bottle and know we're left with the mess of trying to put it back. I hope that President-elect Obama have this discussion with McCain on Monday.

The media would never report this but every one knows very well there're places in all of our major cities that a white person would not be caught there even at 12 noon.Ten times more dangerous than even the most rootless klan.

You can't be serious. Those poor put upon Klansmen. First of all the Klan's objective is to sow hatred and violence in order to bring about an overthrow of the government so a genetically pure (whatever that is!) race of white Americans can restore our country to righteous Christian state.

I think by any definition that is treason and sedition....more of a threat to our government then a liquor store holdup......which the Klan excels at as well.....

To the contrary, the media, particularly the local media, is reporting 24/7 on black crime in black crime-ridden communities, in which neither blacks nor whites are safe. In fact, these reports are so proliferate one would think that crime only takes place in black communities, and lends to the stereotype that has increased the incidents of profiling. All blacks therefore become suspect, and it is the slanted media coverage that has engendered this attitude. Obama was suspect the minute he was recognized as a black man. Based solely on the color of his skin, some chose to believe that simply because he's black, he was un-American, he was hiding something, or he was a radical who "palled around with terrorists."

On the other hand, the media leads us to believe that there is virtually NO crime in white communities and that everyone who enters a white community is safe, neither of which is true. When we do hear of crimes in the white communities, such as the Columbine massacre, it's generally because it was too spectacular not to give it coverage and/or it's explained away with some psychological explanation for it. From the media's general perspective, black people are criminals and white people who commit crimes are psychologically unbalanced.

Your perspective on the media is backward!

I have lived in all 4 corners and the center of the lower 48. Although I'm sure it exists, the least racial bigotry I witnessed was in the far west. I lived in Tennessee and South Carolina and saw plenty that angered me, but at least it was in the open, and everyone knew about it. In my opinion, what was worse was moving to Connecticut and witnessing not only racial bigotry, but just about every other kind of bigotry imaginable--all hidden behind a vicious self-righteousness. That was 40 years ago, and I've been told it's no longer that way. In the midAtlantic states (Pennsylvania, Delaware) it was almost as open as in the south. I'm now living in McCain's Arizona, in fact only a few miles from his Cornville house, With all the ethnic diversity in central Arizona, I expected not to find the bigotry here. But, believe me, it is alive and operating full tilt, to the extent that I recently had to remove myself from a volunteer position because I could no longer tolerate what I was seeing, hearing, and reading in part because I had an Obama sticker on my vehicle. A senior "Christian" woman yelled at me about Obama that "He's an a--hole!" It that's being Christian, then I'm a wooden stump.

I have lived in Minnesota, Massachusetts (college), California, and Hawaii where I presently liv...thankfully all blue states (I was in the 1960's & '70s Minnesota of Humphrey & Mondale, not Pawlenty).

What most on the Mainland don't realize is that Obama was shaped by his upbringing here in Hawaii — as close to a colorblind society as you can come in America.

It is a shame these people are so blinded by stupid hatred,,, they could learn so much from his attitude of inclusivity! It's what makes the rest of the world hopeful about us.

Like it or not, racist hate speech is protected speech under the Constitution, the exception being when it can be clearly established that such speech was intended to and did result in violence. Just like the proverbial yelling "Fire" in a crowded theater and someone gets trampeled. The hate speech equivalent would someone yelling "Lynch him" and someone gets lynched.

The International Convention to End All Forms of Racism, which the US ratified in '96, I believe, calls for the prohibition of racist speech in one of its articles. The US took an "exception" to that article when they ratified the treaty claiming Constitutional protections of "free speech." Well, from the perspective of international law, a member-state is expected to make whatever changes are needed in their laws to conform to the Treaty or what would be the point? And the monitoring body for the Treaty still continues to urge the US to rethink their position. So far to no avail.

There's no comparison between liberals disapproving of Bush as president and rightwing subhumans buying guns and threatening violence because of Obama's election. No comparison whatsoever.

There was NO hate speech directed toward Bush because of the color of his skin or any other circumstance of his birth over which he had no control. There is a difference between "hate speech" and harsh criticism or remarks made toward someone because of something he or she does that one finds unacceptable. When I yell at my neighbor for throwing his garbage on my lawn, that is not hate speech. But when I express hateful words directed toward the color of my neighbor's skin, or her gender, or because she's gay, then that is hate speech!!!

Bush lied to us and engaged our country and our troops in an illegal and immoral war and occupation. As we are now experiencing in our economy and witnessing in Iraq and Afghanistan, he lied about everything his administration has stood upon. Calling him a liar is not hate speech!!!

We're not seeing things in a different light because of race. We're seeing a reality in our country that we've have shed enough light upon.

What a shame.

Could we think of something?
I think the international Obama frenzy (of which I am part) should turn its energy in condemning racism all over the world.
Racism is already condemned everywhere, but it does not work.

Some cleaver guy should find a new way to shame the racist, make them appear retarded, ugly, etc.

Ending racism must begin in our homes, with our children. Racism is a learned attitude and behavior that begins in our homes and communities, at our kitchen tables and even in our churches and schools. It's taught when children hear their parents speak negatively about another race of people, or when they see their parents treat others differently because of the color of their skin. It's taught when racial jokes are told at Thanksgiving dinner, or when a white child is never given a black doll for Christmas. It's an insidious lesson that children learn well, and then pass onto their own children, from one generation to the next.

Each of us has a responsibility to be the teachers of love and tolerance and inclusiveness, not only to our own children, but to every child we come in contact with. Our children are our future, but we will plant the seeds that they will bring into fruition. The seeds of racism have been planted for far too long, and have taken root. We have to plant a different kind of seed.

I say let's get this all out now -- it's like a toxin, and this country needs detoxifying. The more it's talked about, the better. When Obama gave the Perfect Union speech, it got quality dialogue on race going for the first time in a long, long time. The country moved forward from that enough to actually elect Obama. There's more to be done, obviously. And I agree with another poster in this thread that shame is more powerful than censorship.

Also, would hate groups that are spouting threats to our president be considered terrorists? Ie... KKK? After all, these are guys that bombed, hung, and killed people throughout history in this country.

don't blame racism upon mccain and palin and the republicans. its a failure of leadership by almost everyone in power. people get along on a personal basis when common ground is found. when differences are emphasized instead of common ground all sorts of conflict ensues. democrats are just as much to blame by trying to pigeonhole every "different" group into a certain separate category as republicans are to blame for trying to corral white people into their own group in an "us versus them" battle to take advantage of the democratic strategy. the fact that 90% of mc cain's vote was white was a strategy not an accident. politicians who engage in emphasizing differences on either side of the aisle should not be allowed to participate in our country's leadership. its fitting that a mixed race guy who grew up in a place where people of asian and hawaiin heritage are a majority population would have to point out that we are all americans first and we have a lot more in common than not.

Thank you Heru. You are my HERO!! Racism is a mental illness, but because it's so prevalent in our country and throughout our world, people are reluctant to accept this. In fact, they see it as natural. This became so evident in the media coverage of the racially-charged elements of the election campaign. They gave the racists names, like "blue collar" or "middle America," who would never vote for a black man; but they never named them or held them to account as racists. Instead, they would say things like, "Why can't Obama close the deal" with these people, putting the burden on him rather than on the racists themselves. Racism is rooted in delusion, and delusion is a symptom of a corrupted or broken mind. How can one believe that he/she is superior to another person simply because that other person has a different skin color? It's a delusion! When the mere color of another's skin drives one to commit violent acts, how is this not the behavior of a deluded mind? Racism is a sickness, an internal, spiritual sickness, as deadly as cancer. It's a sickness that assaults the spiritual essence of others, and a sickness that slowly destroys one's own soul.

racism isn't confined to white people. one of the most interesting conversations i've ever eavesdropped on was between three jamaican americans(they didn't consider themselves african americans apparently) speaking patois. they didn't realize i could understand them so they spoke freely. the gist of their conversation was complaining about how they were mistaken for, in their words, lazy african americans. racism is learned. both parties have had a role in teaching a large number of americans very well.

We all knew their was and will be threats, but I believe the media (including huff) should play them down; not hype them up...not even report on them;

It just calls out all the copycat crazies to one up one another.

I suggest you take it down.
