GOP Sen. Chambliss Refuses To Testify In Sugar Company Fire

News Three was the first to tell you Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss had been subpoenaed by Savannah Attorney Mark Tate in the case against Imperial Sugar.

Tate, who represents families of the deceased, subpoenaed Chambliss because he believes Chambliss has pertinent information for the case.

In a News Three follow-up, we've gotten word that Chambliss' lawyer is moving to quash the subpoena. Tate says attorneys for Chambliss claim he has immunity because he's a U.S. Senator.

I wonder how much money Chambliss has invested in Imperial Sugar. For those readers not familiar with this tragic industrial accident, because of improper clean up the sugar dust itself exploded burning to death many and serverely burning the survivors. Senator Chambliss must have some kind of money connection with Imperial Sugar to want to stop these families. As for no subpoena, I think he should tallk to Ted Stevens!

Another rich white guy who believes that for whatever reason, the law of the land doesn't apply to him.

My understanding of the way the law worked Pre-Bush, was immunity only applied for the time the spend in the Senate, not the time they are Senators.

I find it hard to beleive that a Senator has greater protection than a President. Clinton had to respond to a subpoena on a civil case (Paula Jones) and provide a deposition.
