The Hill:

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) is batting down the hype that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin heads into 2012 as the frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination.

Palin energized the Republican base after GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) tapped her as his running mate and she has tried to preserve her high public profile since Election Day.

Anybody with a half ounce of intelligence knows Sarah Palin isn't ready to lead anything that calls for any amount of knowledge.

If the GOP wants to survive, they better hope he's right.

One of the few half way intelligent remarks, I have heard from Gingrich. Mostly it has been the
partisan promotion of "republican values", which I consider to be an oxymoron.

Palin NEEDS to be the face of the GOP so that the extreme-right can take down the GOP towards another generation of political doom. I would support Palin in her quest to become the GOP leader so that Obama can "paint" some of that red-real-estate blue in 2012

Gee, I thought those GOPers said Palin was the most qualified VP in history --- and they also said she would be perfect choice for being one heart beat away from the Prez.... so, why wouldn't Palin be the head of the GOP party? She is the most qualified right?

They deserve Palin ruining their party. For the last 8 years, they've had their Harvard/Yale man from a political dynasty family and all kinds of professional strategists/government guys from the last 30 years backing him up, and passed him off as an everyman. They encouraged him to dumb it down, turn the self-deprecating act way up and act like a guy "just like YOU" was in charge of the show.

Now the base really thinks anyone can do the job and they're clammoring for someone as dumb as Bush pretended to be.

If Obama has a modestly successful first term, Palin will be put up as the sacrificial lamb for 2012 as the Republican brand will still be in flux and folks like Pawlenty, Jindal, and some of the future leaders will try to sit it out to avoid damaging themselves for the future. Palin's ego is too big to let her sit it out. Others like Romney and Huckabee and even Gingrich, the older guard, may also challenge her, but their job will be to weaken her before she goes up against Obama. Remember that some of these guys are not adverse to eating their young.

Saw Jindal over the last week with the governors and, while he has some "interesting" religious leaning too, Palin's out of her league. Jindal is smooth and would be able to, outside of potential racial issues in the Republican party, draw more moderate Republicans. He would do best to stay out of the fray in 2012 and test the waters with an electorate that'll be more open to another non-White running. Of course, first he's got to get that Louisiana budget deficit controlled or he can kiss the fiscal conservative side of the argument goodbye.

The preposterous dance that is necessarily done in politics -- soft-pedaling harder truths or "my good friend-ing" political enemies -- is clearly at work here. Aside from the fact that I'm not too sure Gingrich speaks with any GOP gravitas at this point, it is frustrating that someone as limited as Palin is given the "one in 20 or 30" cred as assessed by Newt. Part of me is stunned by much of this because I find it ridiculous that we are still talking about Palin; but another part of me wishes there were a heavy-hitting, respected Republican who would call her out for what she truly is and, at last, put an end to this frightening and embarrassing charade.

One large ego commenting on another large ego. Neither of which is anything more than an typical politician, with Republican philosophy, whose ideas are at least 18th Century. The Republicans had better come up with someone with more substance than Sarah and/or Newt. One a "has been" the other a "never will be".
