DIAMOND BAR, Calif. — More residents of Southern California were urged to leave their homes Sunday despite calming winds that allowed a major aerial attack on wildfires that have destroyed hundreds of homes and blanketed the region in smoke.

Fires burned in Los Angeles County, to the east in Riverside and Orange counties, and to the northwest in Santa Barbara County. More than 800 houses, mobile homes and apartments were destroyed by fires that have burned areas more than 34 square miles since breaking out Thursday.

No deaths have been reported, but police brought in trained dogs Sunday morning to search the rubble of a mobile home park where nearly 500 homes were destroyed. They didn't find any bodies after searching about a third of the homes.

"This has been a very tough few days for the people of Southern California," Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said after touring damage.

The smell of smoke pervaded metropolitan Los Angeles. Downtown skyscrapers were silhouettes in an opaque sky, and concerns about air quality forced organizers to cancel a marathon in suburban Pasadena where 8,000 runners had planned to participate.

Fierce Santa Ana winds that fanned the fires on Saturday weakened Sunday morning, allowing firefighters to set backfires to prevent flames from advancing to hillside neighborhoods. Air tankers swooped low over suburbs, red fire retardant billowing from their bellies as they painted defensive lines between brushlands and homes. Big helicopters shuttled back and forth on water drops.

The most threatening blaze had scorched more than 16 square miles in Orange and Riverside counties after erupting Saturday and shooting through subdivisions entwined with wilderness parklands. Multimillion-dollar homes were threatened in Diamond Bar in Los Angeles County as the out-of-control fire pushed northward.

Fire officials on Sunday morning ordered 1,400 more residents to evacuate, in addition to 26,500 who had already been told to leave.

Retired aerospace engineer Joe Gomez, who has lived in his palm-tree-lined Diamond Bar neighborhood for 45 years, stayed put despite being under a mandatory evacuation.

"I'm trying to use some logic here," said Gomez, 72, trying to gauge the direction of the wind and flames. "I don't think it's going to come down this way."

In the early morning, winds pushed flames dangerously close to a church and adjacent mobile home park in the Olinda Village area north of Yorba Linda, but firefighters were able to beat it back. Only one mobile home was lost.

Little fire activity was apparent in Orange County after dark Sunday, but the official containment estimate remained at zero.

On Saturday, the fire burned 119 homes in the communities of Corona, Yorba Linda and Anaheim. In addition, 50 units of an apartment complex burned, Orange County fire spokeswoman Angela Garbiso said.

Capt. Guy Melker of the Los Angeles County Fire Department stood on a balcony of a multimillion-dollar home in Diamond Bar, looking down into a canyon with flames on the far side.

"It's an interesting chess game right now," Melker said. "Sometimes Mother Nature puts us in check, and our job is to put her in checkmate."

As Melker spoke, a small spotter plane slipped low across a ridge, followed by a big air tanker that dropped its load along a ridge.

In the Orange County city of Brea, fire destroyed the main building of a high school.

About 50 miles to the northwest, a large fire that torched a mobile home park in the Sylmar area of Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley had moved into the rugged San Gabriel Mountains and was burning vigorously _ but well outside the city.

Authorities said Sunday that 484 of the Oakridge Mobile Home Park's 608 units were lost. The fire also destroyed nine single-family homes and 11 commercial buildings.

The park was home to many elderly residents, and though no fatalities were reported and no one was reported missing, investigators were searching the site using trained dogs. The search was about 30 percent complete by midday Sunday.

"To this point no human remains have been found," said Deputy Police Chief Michael Moore.

Fire officials estimated that at the peak of the Sylmar fire, 10,000 people were ordered to evacuate. However, many evacuation orders were lifted Saturday night, Fire Department spokesman Ron Haralson said. Five looting arrests were reported.

About 90 miles northwest of Sylmar, a 3-square-mile fire that began in the upscale Santa Barbara County community of Montecito on Thursday night was 75 percent contained by Sunday morning after injuring at least 25 people.

County spokesman William Boyer said 130 homes burned in the city of Santa Barbara and 80 burned in adjacent Montecito. Some of those destroyed were multimillion-dollar homes with ocean views. All evacuees but those from 260 homes were allowed to return by Sunday night.

I'm not sure if anyone's posted something else about helping out these poor folks, but Charity Navigator has a list of local charities (and links to them) who are helping those displaced by the fires.

http://blog.charitynavigator.org/2008/11/help-victims-of-california-wildfires.html

If you want to keep an eye on them, they'll most likely follow up with more information as they find it.

How about forming an Air Force "rain storm" for this kind of disaster? They successfully "carpet-bombed" Viet Nam, wouldn't it be as easy (and cheaper) to methodically drop huge amounts of water on fire?

Minimax,

The do have c130s and helos for such which I can think you also must have seen in fire fighting in different parts of the world.
Fire storms are self feeding systems and impossible to stop and they just must burn themselves out and eventually lack the winds which they self produce before they stop. Fire storm systems are massive and one country in particular pron to such fire storm systems is Australia and their vast areas of burnable materials in the dry seasons.
the Aboriginal peoples of the older days periodically started fires for the cleansing of the earth and rebirth when lightning was not in enough quanities. It is thought that through such methods huges fire storm systems did not develop as there was not the undergrowth on which such systems could feed.

An old method of the fire services has been to put out the fires caused perhaps by lightning strikes though with understanding of the natural ways of forests and nature such has been very much stopped and now the priority is to protect life and properties and let forest fires with huge amounts of undergrowth burn as nature intends it to be.

It's Monday morning here at about 3 minutes into the morning after the worst fires in California history... an area the size of the State of Rhode Island is still burning in Orange and Los Angeles Counties and they aren't the only area's. Over 800 homes and countless other "structures" have burned to ashes in less than minutes, 40 and 50 ft tall walls of incandescent flames roared up hillsides in a matter of seconds destroying all in their path and forcing even stubborn firemen with the world's best training to flee in panic, leaving their hoses to melt and burn into the ground. Metal street signs melted, over 600 mobile homes burned up in a few hours, and you ... you took us off the front page for what... politics. Next year when you plan your vacation, don't include California... if we aren't important enough to watch on tv for more than one day, you certainly wouldn't like us for a week...

I hate that such insensitive people are going on about this nasty rubbish. HUFFPOST - can you not do something about these people? Give them the boot - they are not discussing; they are trolling and antagonizing. I intentionally left the word "hate" in this post so that it would have to be read/filtered. I'm all for free speech, but there's also basic decency. Privately owned entities are free to place limits on what people can say. They would not allow - for example - a halocaust (sp?)denier on here. Freedom of speech was intended to ensure that the GOVERNMENT does not abridge anyone's right to free speech. Newspapers do not print every hateful letter to the editor, and I think Huffpost should keep that in mind.

You are so right. And, some of my posts are "filtered" for using certain innocuous words. How others get through with such inflammatory rhetoric, I will never know. BTW, some of them even "break the rules" of this s.i.t.e. when they vocalize "h.a.t.e". towards certain groups. You know what I'm talking about (hint: prop 8). It's been here for several days. *sigh* I hope it gets better for everyone's sake.

Who is going to help rebuild all those homes? My husband and I would like to help. He has a lot of construction background and I have some. If you can please let us know we would like to help any way we can. We weren't sure if Habitat for Humanity was going to get involved or some other non profit.

That is an excellent question-- I was wondering that earlier today, and especially now that the damage continues to spread! If you find out, will you post here? At the very least (I live in GA, so it's a HUGE trip out) I'd like to send clothing and household items for people.

Sending clothing is a mistake. It's best for victims to have either cash of "Chits" that allow them to make personal choices. You would not believe the amt of clothing that's inappropriate, in poor condition or is simply in too great a supply without the manpower to sort.

Money to a tried and true organization is most likely the best mode of assistance.

The Menonites have a disaster team that goes in to areas. They bring their own tools, materials and supplies. I would suggest making any donation to their organization. Even ten dollars helps. They were wonderful after Katrina. In fact, MANY individuals and church organizations took up the slack where they could. Help any of them you saw working after some of our other natural disasters.

I hope my fellow SoCal denizens are OK. We haven't had this kind of fire loss in quite some time. I was born in SoCal and have seen a lot of fires around here over the years, but this is the first I can recall that had so many homes lost. The fire in my neighborhood was contained quickly with no damage to homes and no injuries, but those folks in Porter Ranch, Sylmar, Santa Barbara, Santa Clarita, Corona and a number of other locations are losing so much.

Yeah, it's a danger in SoCal. We get fires and earthquakes. On the other hand, we have *very* few tornadoes (one touched down in Long Beach a few years ago) and no hurricanes. We don't have flooding, but we get mudslides when it rains after a fire. There's no perfect place to live that is free from natural disasters or inclement weather. The way I see it, it's a trade-off. I don't mind the earthquakes so much and the fire danger could be worse.

The lights are flickering here and the power is threatening to go out again, so before I lose my internet connection, let me say that I hope no more homes are lost and I wish the best to those who have lost their homes. If you may be evacuating, please stay safe.

thanks for the support Hare. Just looking into what we can do to help. Probs first off planning Thanksgiving dinners for all the seniors in Sylmar who lost their homes.
Then we'll think about Christmas toys for the kids.
I'll keep posted.
This time, we're not in the line of fire. But I have been many many times, and I know how it feels.
It is so rare that we actually lose homes, much less 1,000 homes.

Could those of you who are posting about revenge and justice and chickens coming home to roost just shut up? Some of us HAVE to live here, because it's where our jobs are. Some of my students have emailed to say that they are sorry they need extensions, but they are under evacuation orders. Some of us are trying to keep our pets safe, put emergency plans into place, and (in my case) keep our asthma under control. We're trying to BREATHE. And you are sounding like jerks.

What is wrong with YOU? Can't you spot a swipe at religious kooks?

Obviously, if true that God Loves All His people, then he wouldn't send fires to destroy their lives or property, would he? In the meantime, have you ever noticed how our extremist religious leaders try to blame meteorological and tectonic calamities upon specific, unappreciated behaviors (usually sexual in nature) of targeted minority groups?

The only thing "wrong" with me, is that I don't accept the whole "God is getting even" sham these charlatans pull on their followers in largely successful attempts to take money from them.

Maybe you think I am "wrong" not to express sympathy for the victims of the annual wildfire phenomena. To be honest, I am sorry to see people suffer property loss. However, if I said so for every loss taking place my town, or country, or continent, hemisphere, or world, I would be a very boring person. In fact you would probably wonder "What is wrong with that person?"

My apologies to the folks who live in Southern California, but what we're basically seeing here is long, drawn out poetic justice for Mother Nature. Coastal Southern California is undergoing desertification and what was once a pretty stable Mediterranean climate is quickly drying out and becoming less and less predictable. It's not just global warming, but also the human footprint. Cities like LA and Las Vegas are totally unsustainable in terms of water usage and carbon/pollution output. Indigenous scrub and pine are dying off and just acting as kindling. Unfortunately, I think we're starting to see the the chickens coming home to roost in So Cal.

Thanks for sharing. I suppose you feel the same way about Australia? They have fires too, and desertification. It is nice that you can pontificate while people lose their homes and all their possessions. Pity they didn't consult you before choosing there to live...oh, there are some 4th generation inhabitants there and they didn't want to move away from their grannies? Well never mind...

To CBS and BlueStateMan...

I live very close to these fires in LA. We may be asked to evacuate. I'm not happy with the two of you ganging up on Eddy333 on behalf of the denizens of LA. Yes, it's a very difficult time, but I for one appreciate a truthful comment over garbage.

He's absolutely correct. The CHICKENS ARE COMING HOME TO ROOST.... a similar situation occurred in New Orleans with the destruction of the wet lands... the wet lands act as a natural barrier to incoming floods, remove the wet lands and you experience havoc during massive storms.

As a species, we need the courage to face the truth. I applaud Eddy333 for his truthful comment. It's time we faced the consequences of our actions and starting behaving like adults.....

Today, I hiked to a low summit of the San Gabriel mountains ... the entire sky line was darkened with smog and soot. My heart goes out to the firefighters and those who lost their homes (I may be one soon), but heck, don't insult us by trying to shield us from the truth. That's adding insult to injury.

The best way you can be nice to us folk in LA (and the planet) is to start speaking the truth about overpopulation, global warming and deforestation.

Humans just cannot continue to overpopulate the planet and live in the manner they've been living. It simply will not work; stop acting like insulted teenagers when someone is truthful.

Not trying to pontificate or blame anyone so you can un-bunch your panties, pal. Just pointing out that the population in SoCal and it's effects on the environment combined with an increase in dry weather in that area thanks to once more predictable weather patterns getting f*cked up by global warming are creating a disaster for the area. I don't condemn anyone for where they choose to live, just pointing out an ugly truth.

What a lot of people in other parts of the nation don't understand is that the Santana driven fires are basically hurricanes of fire . Things in their way basically explode with fire because there has been no significant rain for at least half a year and the very timbers of the houses can combust from the nearby heat. I lived in SoCal for years and when the Santanas came up there was a kind of dread so beautifully described in Joan Didion's Slouching Toward Bethlehem collection of essays....a must read for those who want to know what these seasons of fire are like.
