DIAMOND BAR, Calif. — More residents of Southern California were urged to leave their homes Sunday despite calming winds that allowed a major aerial attack on wildfires that have destroyed hundreds of homes and blanketed the region in smoke.

Fires burned in Los Angeles County, to the east in Riverside and Orange counties, and to the northwest in Santa Barbara County. More than 800 houses, mobile homes and apartments were destroyed by fires that have burned areas more than 34 square miles since breaking out Thursday.

No deaths have been reported, but police brought in trained dogs Sunday morning to search the rubble of a mobile home park where nearly 500 homes were destroyed. They didn't find any bodies after searching about a third of the homes.

"This has been a very tough few days for the people of Southern California," Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said after touring damage.

The smell of smoke pervaded metropolitan Los Angeles. Downtown skyscrapers were silhouettes in an opaque sky, and concerns about air quality forced organizers to cancel a marathon in suburban Pasadena where 8,000 runners had planned to participate.

Fierce Santa Ana winds that fanned the fires on Saturday weakened Sunday morning, allowing firefighters to set backfires to prevent flames from advancing to hillside neighborhoods. Air tankers swooped low over suburbs, red fire retardant billowing from their bellies as they painted defensive lines between brushlands and homes. Big helicopters shuttled back and forth on water drops.

The most threatening blaze had scorched more than 16 square miles in Orange and Riverside counties after erupting Saturday and shooting through subdivisions entwined with wilderness parklands. Multimillion-dollar homes were threatened in Diamond Bar in Los Angeles County as the out-of-control fire pushed northward.

Fire officials on Sunday morning ordered 1,400 more residents to evacuate, in addition to 26,500 who had already been told to leave.

Retired aerospace engineer Joe Gomez, who has lived in his palm-tree-lined Diamond Bar neighborhood for 45 years, stayed put despite being under a mandatory evacuation.

"I'm trying to use some logic here," said Gomez, 72, trying to gauge the direction of the wind and flames. "I don't think it's going to come down this way."

In the early morning, winds pushed flames dangerously close to a church and adjacent mobile home park in the Olinda Village area north of Yorba Linda, but firefighters were able to beat it back. Only one mobile home was lost.

Little fire activity was apparent in Orange County after dark Sunday, but the official containment estimate remained at zero.

On Saturday, the fire burned 119 homes in the communities of Corona, Yorba Linda and Anaheim. In addition, 50 units of an apartment complex burned, Orange County fire spokeswoman Angela Garbiso said.

Capt. Guy Melker of the Los Angeles County Fire Department stood on a balcony of a multimillion-dollar home in Diamond Bar, looking down into a canyon with flames on the far side.

"It's an interesting chess game right now," Melker said. "Sometimes Mother Nature puts us in check, and our job is to put her in checkmate."

As Melker spoke, a small spotter plane slipped low across a ridge, followed by a big air tanker that dropped its load along a ridge.

In the Orange County city of Brea, fire destroyed the main building of a high school.

About 50 miles to the northwest, a large fire that torched a mobile home park in the Sylmar area of Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley had moved into the rugged San Gabriel Mountains and was burning vigorously _ but well outside the city.

Authorities said Sunday that 484 of the Oakridge Mobile Home Park's 608 units were lost. The fire also destroyed nine single-family homes and 11 commercial buildings.

The park was home to many elderly residents, and though no fatalities were reported and no one was reported missing, investigators were searching the site using trained dogs. The search was about 30 percent complete by midday Sunday.

"To this point no human remains have been found," said Deputy Police Chief Michael Moore.

Fire officials estimated that at the peak of the Sylmar fire, 10,000 people were ordered to evacuate. However, many evacuation orders were lifted Saturday night, Fire Department spokesman Ron Haralson said. Five looting arrests were reported.

About 90 miles northwest of Sylmar, a 3-square-mile fire that began in the upscale Santa Barbara County community of Montecito on Thursday night was 75 percent contained by Sunday morning after injuring at least 25 people.

County spokesman William Boyer said 130 homes burned in the city of Santa Barbara and 80 burned in adjacent Montecito. Some of those destroyed were multimillion-dollar homes with ocean views. All evacuees but those from 260 homes were allowed to return by Sunday night.

Largest state in the Union is burning down, while Bush just fiddles.

Another Nero moment for George Bush, Homeland security and his administration. At least give us your signature "Fly-over" George.

History will never forgive this massive blunder the way many Americans have - The Commander in Chief sat in a playpen with children while skyscrapers and government buildings were being flattened, and thousands of citizens whose safety he is responsible for were killed by enemy attack. NEVER FORGET.

This President "Flew Over" New Orleans while the city was destroyed, thousands were stranded, starved, and on roof tops crying for help, and over a thousands died - many unnecessarily. And he is so blind, ignorant and incompetent he actually said "Brownie, you're doing a heckova job." NEVER FORGET.

As much as I dislike Dubya, fires like these have threatened California for decades. Yes, the helicopters are in Iraq, but in terms of Bush's actions THIS WEEK, there's not much anyone can do. People are fond of pointing to the rent-a-planes from Canada, but they have bad forest fires there, too. People need to get a grip on what a president can and can't do. Yes, he made a mess in New Orleans, but these fires have a life of their own. Next summer, when Obama is president, California will burn again, and the loonies on the right will be blaming him. Don't be a loonie on the left. California was not created by George Bush, and they have had fires since before he was even born. Get a dose of reality.

Fire crews are short on equipment...a lot of the Nat'l Guard heavy equipment they used to have access to went over to Iraq and never came back or was replaced. So he has some major responsibility for that!

10 billion a month in Iraq = No infrastructure or technology upgrades
10 billion a month in Iraq = No National Guard; No brush cleared for 8 years
10 billion a month in Iraq = No fire fighting planes for places that burn annually

Excusing complacency as "It happens all the time" is just an excuse for the inability to plan, prepare and come up with solutions outside of the box. Damn,,,,,,you KNOW this will happen every year, and cost the state and federal government 10 of millions annually and you don't even attempt to come up with a mitigating solution.

That's like waiting for the levy to break, every year instead of finding a better way.

That's not leadership.

I pray that these fires open residents and state officials eyes to the dangers of allowing people to live in such a fire prone area and to change building codes to protect the ones who want to live there or rebuild there.

Having lived in So. CA years ago, I'm appalled at the rude comments here. Hills surrounding low lying cities and communities burn--regularly. Normally, offshore breezes blow in from the ocean keeping temperatures moderate (it's been a major selling point for CA). Sometimes, the wind changes direction causing hot, dry winds to blow in from the desert called Santa Anas. These winds can be fierce, and damaging!!

One weekend we woke up to our back fence flat on the ground. The Santa Ana winds BROKE off the 4 x 4 posts. An hour later a friend called to tell us that our travel trailer (which we had parked on on a friend's property in the back country) had been lifted up and pitched over 25' down a ravine. When it landed, it cracked open like an egg. Thank God, we weren't sleeping in it that weekend! This was BEFORE climate change became a major factor.

Let's face it. We ALL stereo-type parts of the country we know nothing about. True, there are big homes in California, but they all over the country as well. Yes, there are liberals in California and every where else, too. Whatever claim you can make about California, you can make in your own state as well.

What part of the country does everyone live in that is free of tornadoes, floods, drought, noreasters (sp.?), forest fires, earthquakes, hurricanes, blizzards, etc. This would obviously leave YOU in a position to leave negative posts, right?

But the fact remains that that area burns more often and hotter than anywhere on earth.

And local building codes should be designed for the folks that want to live there not the developers to make money

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:57 PM on 11/16/2008

More specifically, natural fires have been oppressed for over 50 years. The build-up of underbrush allows for these mega-fires. Additionally, houses are built in areas not suitable for living. Then there's the problem of local channels going 24/7 stoking the flames of sensationalism, inspiring the mentally deficient to start even larger fires and become anonymously famous...

helonias . . . Exactly! My above post squeaked by at 250 words. The rest of it would have stated: don't blame innocent people who BELIEVE that their homes were built safely, while developers (everywhere) bend and break laws to make money.

Hillsides in So. CA are covered with sagebrush and chapparel that is oily and burns HOT and fast, only to re-grow and repeat the same process again. Years ago, these fires were considered "brush fires" in the back country. Now, they are disasterous because lives and homes are part of the equation.

Whose to blame here? The couple who moved from another state to be near family or to find a job, or developers who knew better?

There are building standards that have been in place in CA for some time but the Reality is that these wind driven firestorms can heat the inner wood frame of the house to the point it catches fire. This is not the usual SoCal fire...it is far worse and more widespread

I am not blaming those who build flammable homes in this place.

I am blaming those who created the regs that allowed it, when there is a ton of data that show that they should not have.

I live in a similar ecosystem that burns almost as frequently and the same thing happens.

I have a 100 foot buffer around my house

Brush clearance doesn't help when the embers from fires a couple of miles away blow into the ventilation system, or any other open areas of houses. One house in Corona had it's garage door open and embers started a fire there which burned down the house.

100 feet in Santa Anna's will do absolutly nothing. when you have 80 mile an hour winds and embers being blown, being 100 feet away from the flames, the house will literally explode into flames. It is like a blow torch. To make my point the fire in Sylmar jumped an 8 lane freeway that is at least 100 feet.

It really is god/s fault, he designed and created these fire dependent ecosystems that have been doing their thing for 1,000's of years

But he didn't make man smart enough not to build flammable house in them.

But I can't decide if that is intelligent design or natural selection

Melpomene and other LA residents,

As a resident of Houston, I can appreciate the gravity of a natural disaster of this magnitude and the feelings of loss and desperation that come with it. After surviving Ike, Rita, Katrina, and many others in the past, I've found that there is redeeming value in tragedy like this. I've seen people come together, help one another, lend a hand, and really reconnect to their community. It's sad that it takes circumstances such as these, but it is beautiful. It's moments like these that make us thankful for what we do have. After Ike, I was so frustrated that I was without power, but when I thought of how many peoples homes had disappeared into the sea, it gave me pause. Just to be alive was a blessing, even if there were inconveniences.

I am praying for your safety, peace, and healing!
