Study: Sunday Talk Shows Dominated By Conservative Guests

In 2006, Media Matters conducted a study on Sunday political talk shows, finding that "Republicans and conservatives have been offered more opportunities to appear on the Sunday shows -- in some cases, dramatically so." From 2001 to 2005, conservative guests outnumbered progressives "by 58 percent to 42 percent." Atrios notes that tomorrow's shows will also be dominated by conservative guests:

This is the best example currently for a fairness doctrine reboot.

Corporate media: Fox/Murdoch, GE/NBC/MSNBC, TimeWarker/CNN, have a total lock on what the public sees and NPR, also a corporate sponsored giant, also has a lock on what people hear on their way to and from work in cars.

We MUST, as progressives and Democrats, break this monopoly, or we will see another Republican-fascist in power in 2012 and beyond.

To ignore this media threat is to invite fascism and corporatism back to US government in the future.

It would be wise to tell there sponsers to stuff there products on the most blantent shows that have very little balance or none. All they hae to do is add another person with our views no big deal. They do not have to make the show perfect but give a chance to another honest view.

Is this surprising? The official airwaves are still, and probably will remain, dominated by the right wing ideologues. We're a center-right country . . . right? It's up to us to re-write the narrative. Barack Obama's organization showed us part of the formula. Now we need to figure out the rest and wrest control from these people who have so heavily dominated the conversation and so heavy-handedly pushed their world view on those of us who don't fit into it.

Even if radio and television media remain dominated by right wing ideologues, we have proven that the small inroads we’ve made recently are having profound effect. In other words, we may not need to match them blow for blow or station for station, but we do need to build on what we started with Nova M, Air America and others.
