The cash-strapped Chicago Transit Authority is in talks to follow the lead of stadiums and skyscrapers across the country, Jon Hilkevitch reports in the Chicago Tribune:

The Chicago Transit Authority is negotiating with potential corporate sponsors for naming rights at some rail stations as a way to bring in new revenue.

In addition, companies can get their names festooned on highway signs in some parts of the state for sponsoring cleanup projects along stretches of roadways.

Hey! Here's an idea the CTA can work on: get the busses and trains to run on time. Oh, and how about this one: get the folks that work for the CTA to do some work!

Whoever steps up to buy the name rights, don't be looking to the taxpayers for bailout when you tank. Things like this come around to bite you.

Good grief. What's next--the announcer peddling products and services over the loud speaker? I'll tell you what, let everyone ride for free and then I'd have no problem with being bombarded with corporate sponsorship. The problem is when the Board raises fares AND subjects its passengers to annoying advertisements and naming rights. What crap.

Chicago is becoming this "name brand" city, everywhere you go -- neon signs, stadiums, and now the CTA with "names" on them. Instead of the Bryn Mawr station I guess it will be Minute Maid station. That's so stupid.
