NY Times:

In a span of 252 days, the National Review lost two Buckleys -- one to death, another to resignation -- and an election. ...

Now David Frum, a prominent conservative writer who enmeshed himself in a minor dustup during the campaign by turning negative on Governor Palin, is leaving, too. In an interview, he said he planned to leave the magazine, where he writes a popular blog, to strike out on his own on the Web. ...

"I am really and truly frightened by the collapse of support for the Republican Party by the young and the educated," he said.

The National Review is really nothing more than a propagandist rag for every single right wing cause, however insane, bigoted or stupid. As long as they had Bill Buckley with his high falutin accent and his pompous verbosity, they could pretend to be an intellectual magazine. Hardly. At the core of the magazine was every hackneyed, trite, nonsensical belief that belonged to a different era altogether. The only real conservative magazine today is the Economist. Most American "conservatives," of course, would think otherwise, their conservatism being based on every single tenet of intolerance known to humankind.

Couldn't agree more. The full article at the NYT makes it sound like they were a restrained, disciplined camp that put great stock in intellectualism. This is BS. The National Review in the 1990's ran childish columns involving such high brow concepts as "Billary," among others. They've been going downhill for years and I expect this to accelerate now that the remaining thinkers (such as they were) have left. Next up: articles rationalizing the KKK and the skinheads.

Right. This the same magazine that proclaimed Rush Limbaugh to be the unofficial opposition against Clinton. To quote another NR fan, "Gimme a break!".

In so many ways the Republican Party does business a lot like the Catholic church. For example, criticism is not welcome, even from within. Especially from within. Can a wave of recovering Republicans be far behind?

Can we get a Mr Snuggles teddy bear for Frum like Jon Stewart gave to Billo? It might help.

BTW Isn't Mr. Snuggles the "Charmin'" Toilet Paper mascot?

Maybe Stewart was telling Billo that he's full of s**t.

"I am really and truly frightened by the collapse of support for the Republican Party by the young and the educated," he said.

That statement illustrates that he therefore is neither intelligent, or young. The smart young ones have seen the light and jumped ship.

Since these things are planned way in advance, I'm sure they thought it would be a celebratory cruise.

Frum the conservative Pied Piper that led his party over the cliff with his long support of failed policies and myopic political view.....is scurrying away to hide for another day......while he channels the spirit of Reagan for more delusional rhetoric.

What Frum and others who monopolize the elite of the Republican Party fail to admit is that they were very happy to be leaders of the willfully ignorant (WI) until they decided to steer their own boat. After Frum, Will, Noonan got jettisoned by the WI, they were followless; thus, rendered useless. When they had the capacity to manipulate the wilfully ignorant they enjoyed their position at the top, now they must move aside because the ignorant have stormed the Bastille and won't shut up. Now the entire country get a sample of what they have held rule over for the last 8 years -- sheer ignorance!

I remember David Frum's appearance on the "Rachel Maddow Show" a few months ago. He was a self-righteous, condescending jerk. And Rachel dealt with him accordingly.

Just so we are clear on this issue, the "young and the educated" do not form the "Base" of the present-day Republican Party. And they are not the type of folk that Sarah Palin was trucked in to appeal to.

In my opinion, the so-called base of the GOP are largely rural, insular under-educated, anti-intellectual, religious zealots (I hate to call them "Christians") who consider "change" and "diversity" four letter words.

We all had a front-row seat to the vile, rabble-rousing antics of these individuals at the McCain and Palin rallies. So, is it any wonder that people with even a modicum of reason and common-sense logic would flee the GOP, in droves? I think not.

Yes, he was terrible that night.

Absolutely correct, Jaxy! Well said! Young and old alike among the educated aren't buying all the fear-mongering and religious mumbo-jumbo any more from the Repubs. The election proved that, and if Frum and others of his ilk can't handle it, then they should tuck their tails between their collective legs and bugger off to parts unknown. Maybe Frum would like Alaska's Mat-Su area.

Very well said, especially about Frum's appearance on Rachel Maddow's program. He actually established Rachel's bona fides as a serious television host by getting her to deal with him in a very appropriate manner!

After this last presidential campaign, with the Republican appeal to "low-information" voters, I can't imagine anyone with any kind of real education voting for a Republican candidate! No wonder prominent educated Republicans from Christopher Buckley to Colin Powell supported Barack Obama!

After waging a brutal war of attrition against the middle class for eight long years, the repubs find that intelligent educated people have turned against them. Who would have thunk it?
