NY Times:

In a span of 252 days, the National Review lost two Buckleys -- one to death, another to resignation -- and an election. ...

Now David Frum, a prominent conservative writer who enmeshed himself in a minor dustup during the campaign by turning negative on Governor Palin, is leaving, too. In an interview, he said he planned to leave the magazine, where he writes a popular blog, to strike out on his own on the Web. ...

"I am really and truly frightened by the collapse of support for the Republican Party by the young and the educated," he said.

They're dumping the GOP because they're educated. The GOP is for the elderly and the uneducated.

So if the young and educated are leaving the Republican party in droves, what exactly does that tell you about the "base"?

It still bothers me that people see this past election as a turning point in American history. I hate to say it, and I supported Obama, but I don't see much as having changed in this country. Face it: the Republicans (with Democratic complicity) just caused the greatest financial crisis since the Great Depression. This followed one of the most (I say THE most) corrupt administrations in American history with the 109th Congress as the absolute worst in history. 2008 rolls around and the Republicans throw out the worst ticket ever (find me a bigger bunch of absolute losers from either party). Obama won the election, but by no means was it a landslide.

Could he have won without this economic crisis having fallen upon our heads? Who knows? But it was pretty close up until that point.

David Frum will be back, along with a new crop of Republicans brought up from the depths. The Right Wing media machine will be stronger than ever and will fuel more anger from the dispossed. The Right has always been adept at scapegoating and the Democrats have been likewise adept at accepting blame.

Don't look at it all so negitavely. The game is not really on yet.
It's kinda hard to measure change by what we see. It's deeper than that, and takes longer to become apparent.
As to the R's media machine, more and more are ignoring it, because we're becoming aware of their tricks, and because the internet is now a better news and opinion outlet.

So would you care to explain how the Democrats were "complicit" in the financial crisis? And please don't tell me they didn't do anything in the 110th Congress when they were in control, because they were not in control with the Republicans filibustering everything they tried to do.

He should be frightened by his party, not the lack of support for it. The fact that young and educated people are not attracted to the Republican party should tell its members a lot.

The GOP and conservatives in general never had the young or the intelligent. He is "frightened" because he's been palling around with idiots and now a majority of americans dont want idiots in charge of the government. I mean, hell, who the hell wants to be associated with right wing whacko radio heads?

Karl Rove and Atwater sold that party to the religous right, and those bible pushers polluted the whole shootin match.

Eh... the party was spoiled long before that. Rove and Atwater just made their ads reflect the party more honestly.

The entire eight years of the Bush administration, I felt as if I had gone "through the looking glass" and into a surreal landscape where black was white, up was down, and no one around me seemed to be discomfited by the actions of the neocon group, while they plundered and lied about it. After Katrina especially,it was all over for me,when I saw that The Emporer Truly Had No Clothes. Everyone must know that for eight years we have had the equivalent of a talking sock puppet as president...he can't leave fast enough to suit me.

It's a nice gesture. Helps some folks. Didn't seem to do much for O'Reilly. Credit to Jon Stewart for trying but I guess some people are too far gone for the comfort of coco (ya gotta be way far gone to be beyond coco).

Methinks Mr. Frump should consider the fact that the young are avoiding the Republican Party BECAUSE they're educated. These guys just aren't relevant anymore, and they don't understand why.

America has rejected the ins ane uber-religious ideology in favor of pragmatic judgment. So who do they have in their 2012 lineup? Romney, Huckabee, Palin, and Jindal - all uber-religious ideologues.

Amazing.

"thanks to the coarsening effect of the Internet on political discourse"

I always wondered if I was the only person in the US who thought as I did. Thanks to the Internet, I know I'm not alone and I also know that most of what we're told on the television is not what others people are thinking but what someone wants us to think.
It's harder to fool people when we can talk with people across the country and the world about what matters.

"coarsening" = democratizing. Arianna is right to identify the internet as a major factor in Obama's victory. The corporate stranglehold on the mass media is almost total, but now we can get information that by-passes those filters. Youtube is enormous.

And here I thought it was the Republican Party that was in disarray. I guess it is the whole conservative movement that is in trouble.
